Some Fun With The Crowd

Greivis Vasquez is a bit of a showman with charisma that borders on arrogance and endearing, so it didn't suprise me too much last night that when a select few Michigan State fans sitting in the first row began chirpinig at Vasquez during pregame warm-ups, Vasquez played right along.

"Hey Vasquez," one fan yelled, "I'll give you ten bucks if you make it from there."

Vasquez, who was standing roughly 10 feet beyond the three-point line, turned and fired immediately, only to watch the shot clank off the back of the rim. "Hah! You owe me 10 bucks," the fan yelled in delight.

A few mintes later, as Vasquez neared the sideline once again, the fan screamed, "Hey Vasquez, I'll be here all night!" to which Vasquez gave a thumbs up. "Good," Vasquez replied. "I like that."

But that wasn't enough of a rebuttal for Vasquez. Later on in the Terps warmups, Vasquez approached the sideline and went on the offensive. "Hey you know what?" he said to the Michigan State fans. "Who won the game the last time we played each other?"

The answer, of course, was Maryland, who defeated Michigan State during the regular season in 2006. "The past doesn't count," the fan replied.

Refusing to let Vasquez have the final word, the fan later implored the Maryland guard to tell him why Vasquez wore so much hair gel and declared he would continue to pester Vasquez about his hair throughout the game until he got an answer. This time, Vasquez did not respond.

But the dance these two shared did not end once the game began. After Vasquez made a lay-up to give the Terps a nine-point lead with eight and a half minutes remaining in the first half, he looked over to his No. 1 admirer with his palms open, inviting the fan to say something, anything. The fan remained silent.

With just less than 12 minutes remaining in the second half, Vasquez nailed a three-pointer to put Maryland up by eight. He gave a hard glare to the Michigan State fan as he returned to the other end of the court.

And with just less than three minutes left and Maryland ahead comfortably by 17, Vasquez looked over one final time, wondering if perhaps the Michigan State fan had anything more to say about his hair or the amount of gel he used.

There was no response from the peanut gallery.

I guess it's good that he enjoys playing, I just hope playing to the crowd at some point doesn't result in him missing an important play.
