Three in a Row vs. FSU at Byrd?
Florida State is no longer the Florida State of old. But it is still hard to believe that Maryland has won two straight games against Florida State at Byrd Stadium.
I covered the first victory, a truly improbable 20-17 win by a 2004 Maryland team that was not going anywhere. The Terrapins didn’t have sound quarterback play all season and finished with a 5-6 record. But they found a way to beat No. 5 Florida State.
Looking back on what that win meant, Maryland linebacker Moise Fokou said it took away Florida State’s aura of invincibility. “I remember when they were invincible and the first time we beat them here,” Fokou said. “Maryland had a board saying “Believe” and all the players signed that board. They believed they could get it done. The fans loved it. It opened the doors to say they are a regular team and they can be taken down.”
Two years later, a Maryland team that finished 9-4 upended Florida State, 27-24 at Byrd Stadium. With 49 seconds remaining in that one, Jeremy Navarre blocked a 46-yard field goal attempt that could have tied the game.
Both of the victories boost the confidence of this year’s Maryland team for what awaits on Saturday night.
“We did it before,” Navarre said. “We know we are capable. There is no more thought of ‘Nobody can beat this team, this team is the best.’”
Where would a win Saturday rank compared to the wins in 2004 and 2006?
