Trash Talk in the Trenches

Both offensive linemen Edwin Williams and Jaimie Thomas said there was a lot more trash talk than usual Saturday, and it was flowing both ways along the line of scrimmage. A lot of it came from North Carolina’s Marvin Austin, they said. But Williams and Thomas did not hold back dishing it out as well.

From the start, Williams said, Austin was saying, ‘You can’t block me! I don’t know why you are trying!” Thomas said his linemen kept smiling, kept talking and kept performing. After a while, he said, Austin piped down a little.

“For some reason, I just started mouthing off,” Williams said. “And he just kept going the whole game. ‘You can’t block me! We’re whipping your butt!’ He talked trash the whole game, even on the field goal.”

Maryland nearly had two 100-yard rushers in the game. Coach Ralph Friedgen believes the offensive line played its best game of the season.

“There were some pretty big holes that opened up,” he said. “We played with tremendous leverage. We still made some mental mistakes, which is disturbing to me because we shouldn’t be doing that.”

Hopefully Marvin got chewed out during film session. He got CRUSHED in the trenches by Edwin and Jamie...and Costa even. He played high and got washed out BAD. Frankly, the score should have been much higher for the Terps. UNC had 9 points given to them (bad snap for a safety and Kenny Tate overran a poorly thrown ball and tipped it to the wide receiver for a TD).

Marvin Austin also kept getting taken out of the game...

Oh, and the 4th and 5 that Chris Turner ran for 9 yards...Marvin was the D-Tackle that got washed out on that play.

I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'...

Was Marvin yelling "you can't block me" from the sideline when he was taken out every other play? If so, then he is correct -- you can't block him when he's on the sideline. Work on that conditioning Marvin! Don't worry Marvin, Edwin said he'll send you postcard from the ACC Championship in Tampa.
