Should Terps Go Where They are Not Wanted?
So the Humanitarian Bowl's board of directors met and have decided to try to make the Boise State-Ball State battle of the unbeatens happen on Dec. 30. Here is the latest story out of Boise.
The ACC and potentially Maryland would have to sign off on giving up the slot, which is tied to the ACC's eighth selection. And I am not sure why they would. One college football official I spoke with this evening didn't think Maryland would give up a Boise bid -- especially with no ticket requirement --- to play in, say, a Detroit the day after Christmas.
On the other hand, why should Maryland travel 2,400 miles if it is not really wanted? Shift around practice schedules and play the Eagle Bank Bowl game against Navy, which would draw some interest in this area. The official said that is not out of the question.
Who else is left for the Eagle Bank anyway? Wake Forest already played Navy. NC State can't leapfrog a 7-5 team and is expected to head to an at-large slot.
If Maryland goes to Boise, you'll be playing a road game and everyone will be calling you "that non-descript ACC team." If Maryland goes to D.C. to play Navy, it at least will draw some interest among local fans. In the first year of the bowl, that would be the ideal matchup.
Do you want Maryland to play Navy or Boise State? Do you care? Do you fault the Boise Bowl folks for wanting Ball State over a "non-descript ACC team."
