Leitao Out at Virginia

Men's basketball coach Dave Leitao is out at Virginia. A school official told Cavaliers beat writer Zach Berman that Leitao has "resigned." But according to multiple reports this afternoon, the school fired Leitao today.

CBSSports.com reports that Oklahoma Coach Jeff Capel could be among Virginia's top targets. Capel knows the state of Virginia because of his days as the head coach at Virginia Commonwealth.

Dennis Coleman, Capel's agent, told Maryland beat writer Steve Yanda today that Coleman had not heard from anyone at Virginia, that he had just found out about Leitao and that he would not comment on Capel's potential interest in the Virginia job.

Ricky Lefft, the agent for Minnesota Coach Tubby Smith, told Yanda today that Lefft had not heard about Leitao's firing and that he wouldn't comment on Smith's interest because "it would not be appropriate."

In four seasons at Virginia, Leitao amassed a 63-60 record. Virginia (10-18) finished 11th in the ACC this season, losing in the first round of the ACC tournament against Boston College.

More to come...

C'mon Barno, it's about time for another one or 2 of your copy/paste, pointless posts.

C'mon sport. Hope your panties aren't in too much of a bunch today

POOPY McPOOP YOU SHOULD CHANGE YOU NAME TO POOPY McCONTRADICT MYSELF.

I've probably been to way more Terps sporting events than you have, especially counting the ones that aren't the bball/football variety.

Yeah you're a much bigger fan b/c you see games in person. Wow, talk about being delusional.

All this coming from a guy who thought that Gary Williams should coach the Wizards.

That sums it all up right there folks.

Gary coaching the 'Zards?

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHA

I know a really good candidate... :)

Posted by: petecard | March 16, 2009 4:10 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Barno could coach the Wizards.

Oh wait, if he did that he'd have no time on here to repost what others say.

His family must be so proud. Wonder if when he takes his kids to their sports games or ballets or whatever if he brings his laptop so he can log online and repost comments on an internet blog.

Family-man of the year.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!
BooVA.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Ok here is a serious question. Do you think if MD didn't make the tourney that Leitao's job would have been safe with a "spoiling the rivals season" win at the end. Did the Terps taking two in the ACC making the BooVA game meaningless doom him? It's kind of out there but it's possible...

Posted by: Lee26 | March 16, 2009 4:24 PM | Report abuse

How about other - Jeff Jones. He's been to the NCAAs twice in a row and has Virginia ties...

Posted by: Lee26 | March 16, 2009 4:25 PM | Report abuse

They took my question about Gary coaching the wiz? Sweet.

Posted by: Barno1 | March 16, 2009 4:27 PM | Report abuse

You funny. It's safe to say UVa will NOT be calling Jeff Jones for a return engagement.

Dave Leitao was ousted because as gentle and caring a soul as he was ... oh, no wait, that was Mike Jarvis. Leitao personality makes GW look like a school librarian, plus he didn't win very many games. What else did I miss?

Posted by: info_stuporhighway | March 16, 2009 4:31 PM | Report abuse

Poopy actually thought there was only one pre-season poll of the ACC. Wow, just wow. It's sort of hard to fathom how someone can be this stupid, but I guess when your handle is Poopy McPoop, intelligent commentary is not to be expected.

Why you are even here commenting on something that is so clearly out of your subject area is beyond me.

Beat it Poop

This makes Leitao's shabby treatment of Mamadi Diane even more frustrating. I don't follow UVA too closely, but he got 4 years, and with the new building and things not headed in the right direction, this is hardly surprising.

Posted by: timc3 | March 16, 2009 4:33 PM | Report abuse

Why is it so hard to win at UVA? Nobody since Terry Holland has won any serious contests. Don't give the high academic line. It's harder to get into Duke than UVA, and they seem to do just fine.

Anthony Grant at VCU should be the next coach there. He's a proven winner, knows how to maximize the talent, made VCU into a mid-major powerhouse, AND BEAT DUKE.

I cant believe how much Pete is whining. If things had not gone right for the Terps in Atlanta Pete would be ALL OVER GW--and calling anyone who supports Gary "HOF" Williams an FOG or a Koolaid Drinker.

Somebody get Pete a Weineken and call the Wambulance

Gary SHOULD get to write his own ticket. He is a hall of famer you tried to run out of town because he would not lower his standards to let in the shady practices of the AAU world.

Petecard,

I do not understand your views, in fact they baffle me.

GW is a HOF coach, the fact that he is not in yet is political BS. He routinely out coaches sorry arse Roy Williams, who has pissed away more talent over the years it's not even funny. The championship he won was with somebody else's players and he nearly screwed that up. Yet he is a HOF'er, go figure.

This program was left for dead 20 years ago and GW brought it back to levels it has never been.

After losing some top recurits recently, through no fault of his own, he has taken a team with probably not even NIT talent and gotten them in the Big Dance.

Please stop with your complaining about him because you are looking foolish.

Isn't this a Terps blog???

Why this Va stuff?

I could care less about what happens to the "hoos".

If some people here want to celebrate making one NCAA tournament in 5 years, feel free. Just remember that our entry was based more on the poor play of other conferences across the board rather than what the terps accomplished.

If you feel as though this effort represents "sustained excellence" then I would hate to see what you consider acceptable for the other facets of your lives.

I know VA is an ACC job, but it seems like Tubby is doing OK at Minny. I dunno if he'd leave. I mean, VA hasn't exactly been marquee for a while now.

They would love to know who you really are and come after you.

Gary is God.

Drink the Koolaid.

Um, we have made the tournament 2 out of the last 3 years. We won 25 games in 2006/2007, 6th most in Maryland history. Plesae check your facts before you embarrass yourself further.

C'mon all of you FOG's (Fans of Gary, with an apostrophe for some reason), let's hear about how the Terps are going to win one or two in the ACC.

Don't bother to make your MSG reservations. They won't get that far in the NIT.

Posted by: petecard | February 18, 2009 11:05 AM

Let's face it. We are toast.

Another disappointing season with a team that just doesn't measure up.

We aren't even a factor in the ACC, much less nationally.

Missing the tournament for the 4th time in 5 years is simply unacceptable.

Our program is a real disappointment and I am disgusted.

Let's hear it Koolaid drinkers.

Posted by: petecard | March 9, 2009 6:30 PM

Gary should use the game against NC State to get ready for the NIT.

Maryland plays in the NIT so often it should consider becoming the title sponsor.

Turtle Soup, brought to you by Gary Williams. Simply warm and serve.

Posted by: petecard | March 9, 2009 8:56 AM

Barno,

We ARE toast. You think beating NC State means anything?

Why not just deal with the bottom line: We are going to miss the tournament this year for the 4th time in 5 years.

Unacceptable.

Gary's responsibility.

Posted by: petecard | February 19, 2009 10:32 AM

Right now we have a mediocre program.

The FOG's think Gary should be able to write his own ticket.

Posted by: petecard | March 1, 2009 10:22 AM

Gary's contract will be up in 2-3 years. That's where the focus should be.

making the NCAA is not a worthy goal in and of itself

Posted by: petecard | February 28, 2009 12:17 PM

“Um, we have made the tournament 2 out of the last 3 years. We won 25 games in 2006/2007, 6th most in Maryland history. Plesae check your facts before you embarrass yourself further.”

Actually, I do certainly know about the 06-07 squad. I posted otherwise to get the "you are wrong we have made it twice!" responses. You could call it 2 out of 3 or 2 out of 5 depending on the sample size you choose. Either way, does this really support a sustained excellence argument?

What you choose to ignore is that this team did not play a single non-conference road game (tournaments count as neutral sites). So who should we really thank for this season, the team/coach or the schedulers?

Suuuuuuuure you did. The "I said something that wasn't true so people would point it out" excuse is about as pitiful as it gets.

As for your assertion that we should frame this as 2 out of 5 and not 2 of 3, well why not just frame it as 13 tournament appearances out of the last 16 years?

Posted by: Barno1 | March 16, 2009 7:45 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: blinders1 | March 16, 2009 7:08 PM

What you choose to ignore is that this team was due to play a road game in the ACC-Big Ten challenge, but it was not up to MD to decide that. What you choose to ignore is that we play a home and home series with Charlotte and this so happened to be the year the game was in College Park. What you choose to ignore is that playing GW in DC IS a road game. What you choose to ignore is that we played 9 ACC road games in some of the toughest arenas in the country...who gives a rat's *ss about playing non conference road games.

Posted by: Barno1 | March 16, 2009 7:47 PM | Report abuse

8 ACC road games, 3 ACC games on neutral court.

Posted by: Barno1 | March 16, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Baron1:

If you want to count a 30 minute bus ride to a DC arena as an away game, you do that.

"What you choose to ignore is that we played 9 ACC road games in some of the toughest arenas in the country..."

How can this be ignored? It is the identical situation every year!

"who gives a rat's *ss about playing non conference road games."

Lets consider your statement: since an acceptable ACC season for Maryland is now 8 wins (not counting the ACC tournament), that now means that the Terps must come up with at least 12 other wins to qualify for the dance. Non conference road games are tough outs, so with such a limited margin for error, it is understandable that UMD would not want to schedule these games.

Posted by: blinders1 | March 16, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Do you follow college bball at all, blinders1?

Most teams from major conferences don't play more than 1 or 2 non conference road games per year, MD is no different. You are trying to come up with a new angle to criticize/diminish the terps success, but you're failing miserably.

Posted by: mike761 | March 16, 2009 10:38 PM | Report abuse

Mike, I think you answered your own question. Blinders doesn't follow Maryland closely. He thought this was our first NCAA appearance in 5 years. Hah.

Posted by: Barno1 | March 16, 2009 11:16 PM | Report abuse

As a Terps fan, I definitely endorse giving Leitao another year, with the condition that he work harder on losing to Maryland. Not consistent enough there.
