Maryland Almost a Lock for NCAAs

Hello, everyone. This is Eric. Just left Maryland’s locker room. Gary Williams told the players not to talk about the NCAA tournament. But you could tell they feel confident about their position. And they should. They deserve it.

A masterful coaching job all season by Gary Williams that is highly likely to culminate with an NCAA tournament appearance. I have said it all season, if Gary can guide this group to the NCAAs, it will stand as one of his finest accomplishments in his career at Maryland.

Few games spoke more to Gary’s coaching prowess than tonight’s win against Wake Forest. One team had a great coach. The other team had great talent. That didn’t turn out well for Wake Forest’s Dino Gaudio. Enough said.

Maryland is a near lock to make the NCAA tournament. With wins over Wake, Michigan State and North Carolina, it is very hard to keep this team out. Is there still a chance they could not make the field? Yes, slight. After the Air Force at-large selection a few years ago, I try to avoid saying anything is a total lock. But this is close to being a lock now; no other bubble teams have made this strong a statement this week.

The one thing Maryland has to watch out for is all these upsets in the conference tournaments. If Temple wins the Atlantic 10, that likely means three bids from the A-10. If Baylor wins the Big 12 tourney, that means another unexpected bid from the Big 12.

All that said, Maryland should see its name in the 65-team field on Sunday night. An NIT matchup with Mason is avoided. And Terp coaches, players and fans have plenty reason to be proud of this team, which will have willed its way into the bracket.

I believe Lunardi has us as the last team in, and CNNSI still has us out. What gives?

You're going to exclude a team with two wins over likely #1 seeds and another win against a top 10 team . . . for Penn State?

Hey skins1110, I'm with you in demanding a "3 part series" apology, but don't hold your breathe. The Gary-haters and so called "experts" will act like they expected as much or quietly stew from the inside (I hope the later).

I personally think most of his haters are people with short attention spans or kids who want instant gratification (never stuck behind a team before in their lives...except team was winning of course).

I graduated back in '03 and still remember electricity on campus when we won '02 tournament. I'm proud to shout encouragement to Coach and team thru both good and lean times.

GO TERPS!!!

If Maryland can manage to do better than losing by 20 points tomorrow, they have a good chance to make the NCAA tournament. If they lose to Clemson by 30 again or Duke by 40 again......

Did you find anything to narc on us about in the locker room? Was there champagne? There's an under age drinking scandal waiting to happen!

Great great win by Gary and the Terps. Like Prisbell said, "One team had a great coach. The other team had great talent." Wake has ridiculous players on that team but Terps got Gary. Maybe the NCAA committee can get its act together and put in a legit team with legit wins. Sports Illustrated is a joke is is totally irrelevant now.

I agree, if they lose to Clemson by 30 or even by 1, they should definitely not make the tourney.

Tonight's was a great win but let's not get carried away with rosy assumptions about an NCAA invitation. Lose to Clemson again? How? Clemson dropped their first game and they're out of the tournament. It's Duke or BC for the Terps tomorrow. Hope it's Duke - our lads deserve some revenge.

None of you guys seem to remember Bud Millikan or Lefty Dreisel. Coach Williams has the best record of the three. Hard to imagine someone new improving on his (Williams') record. Wouldn't it be sweet to see our guys clean Duke's clock tomorrow? Better than an NCAA invitation.

Yeah I know Clemson was out, thats why I said, "or even by 1 point." GO TERPS

This has been probably the most entertaining conference championship season I've witnessed in a while. Syracuse over Uconn in 6OT! WVU knocking out Pitt! Nobody left in the Big 12 except Baylor! Temple, are you kidding me? And now MD winning big over Wake. Is College B-ball great or what?

MD has to be in the dance now. Three top 10 wins. 20 wins this season. In the ACC Semis. Enough said.

To all the HOGs like petecard and restonhoops who said we can't beat Wake, Go pound sand. Still want to fire Gary? You can accuse me of wanting to carry his golf bag, but you couldn't even carry his jock strap, you faithless, gutless, fair weather, bad sweater wearer, living in my mommy's basement PUNKS.
FEAR THE F'N TURTLE!!

So it is officially Duke up next. Hopefully the fellas will be fired up by the old 'don't want to lose to Duke 3 times in one season' thing.

Im proud of this team! honestly, the thing I fear the most is getting dunked on by Patrick Chewing

Jake don't worry--if GV gets to play more than 15 minutes against Puke, we're in good shape. They've got a worse front court than we do.

When do I get my 3-part series about Gary getting 20 wins out of this team?

Let's face it. We are toast.

Another disappointing season with a team that just doesn't measure up.

We aren't even a factor in the ACC, much less nationally.

Missing the tournament for the 4th time in 5 years is simply unacceptable.

Gary must do a better job recruiting. Making the tournament next year will NOT be enough. We need to be there almost every year.

Our program is a real disappointment and I am disgusted.

Let's hear it Koolaid drinkers.

Gary should use the game against NC State to get ready for the NIT.

Maryland plays in the NIT so often it should consider becoming the title sponsor.

Turtle Soup, brought to you by Gary Williams. Simply warm and serve.

Barno,

We ARE toast. You think beating NC State means anything?

C'mon all of you FOG's, let's hear about how the Terps are going to win one or two in the ACC.

Don't bother to make your MSG reservations. They won't get that far in the NIT.

Posted by: petecard | February 18, 2009 11:05 AM

Why not just deal with the bottom line: We are going to miss the tournament this year for the 4th time in 5 years.

Unacceptable.

Gary's responsibility.

Posted by: petecard | February 19, 2009 10:32 AM

Right now we have a mediocre program.

The FOG's think Gary should be able to write his own ticket.

Posted by: petecard | March 1, 2009 10:22 AM

Gary's contract will be up in 2-3 years. That's where the focus should be.

making the NCAA is not a worthy goal in and of itself

Posted by: petecard | February 28, 2009 12:17 PM

Even if we make it, that is NOT the benchmark we should have for our program
