Terps Return to NCAA Tournament

At 6:19 p.m. EST, Greg Gumbel announced Maryland had gained the 10 seed in the West region and will play seventh-seeded California on Thursday in Kansas City, Mo.

Should the Terps advance to the second round, they would face either No. 2 seed Memphis or No. 15 seed Cal St. Northridge.

Local note: American got the 14th seed in the East, playing Villanova -- in Philadelphia -- on Thursday.

I'll have reaction from Gary Williams and some players in a little bit.

What do you think of the match-up?

Where do you think Georgetown, George Mason, UVA, VA Tech, and George Washington will be seeded? I assume they had a better season since I did not read any 3 part series in the Post about the crappy state of their program.

C'mon all of you FOG's, let's hear about how the Terps are going to win one or two in the ACC.

Don't bother to make your MSG reservations. They won't get that far in the NIT.

Posted by: petecard | February 18, 2009 11:05 AM

Let's face it. We are toast.

Another disappointing season with a team that just doesn't measure up.

We aren't even a factor in the ACC, much less nationally.

Missing the tournament for the 4th time in 5 years is simply unacceptable.

Our program is a real disappointment and I am disgusted.

Let's hear it Koolaid drinkers.

Posted by: petecard | March 9, 2009 6:30 PM

Gary should use the game against NC State to get ready for the NIT.

Maryland plays in the NIT so often it should consider becoming the title sponsor.

Turtle Soup, brought to you by Gary Williams. Simply warm and serve.

Posted by: petecard | March 9, 2009 8:56 AM

Barno,

We ARE toast. You think beating NC State means anything?

Why not just deal with the bottom line: We are going to miss the tournament this year for the 4th time in 5 years.

Unacceptable.

Gary's responsibility.

Posted by: petecard | February 19, 2009 10:32 AM

Right now we have a mediocre program.

The FOG's think Gary should be able to write his own ticket.

Posted by: petecard | March 1, 2009 10:22 AM

Gary's contract will be up in 2-3 years. That's where the focus should be.

making the NCAA is not a worthy goal in and of itself

Posted by: petecard | February 28, 2009 12:17 PM

Even if we make it, that is NOT the benchmark we should have for our program

Posted by: petecard | March 3, 2009 2:18 PM

they will lose Vasquez and find themselves struggling mightily again next yr to go 8-8 ACC. Only then might Gary realize that missing NCAA's in 5 of 6 years is unacceptable & hopefully he'll know no contract extension is coming nor deserved. Gary has said himself that recruiting is NOT part of his coaching responsiblity so obviously he's out of touch. We'll always be thankful for the NC Gary, but do the right thing & step down after next year's NIT.

I LIKE IT! Cal likes to shoot 3s alot so it should be an interesting match-up. I also like the fact that the winner gets to face possibly Memphis in the 2nd round.

I told you they were better than an 11 seed.

To be honest Maryland's tournament chances were over long before the Virginia game. They will probably die in the NIT. Next year Gary will again blame the administration, keep quoting that because he won a championship he is safe, and again fail to make the tournament. Thank you Lady Terps for giving us something to hope for.

This was a very poor season, with mediocre players, coached by an individual whose ego far exceeds his abilities; not to mention the boorishness of fans (and even some players), the continuing discord with University administration, the recruiting inadequacies, the horrendous academic performance/graduation rates, and the aggregate, seriously adverse impact Williams currently has on the University of Maryland's stature. He is the catalyst that is making Maryland a "laughing stock" among reputable universities.

We are so bad. how anyone thinks we have a chance to make the ncaa tourney is beyond me. I felt like i used to feel watching md play some joke at the beginning of the season. It was a complete mismatch, and just because we stayed in it for the first doesnt mean anything. All you had to do was watch the frontcourt play. we are terrible. 5-11, 6-10 best case scenario

it's laughable to think that anyone who watches terps games thinks that this team is of the same caliber as the rest of the league. They don't have the pieces (players) to compete in the acc right now. they lost to morgan state at home, and i'f i'm not a fan i don't know why i watched the entire debacle. Gary's time is up, the program seems stale, they need new energy.

Please tell me what program that considers itself even a top 50 program that went 4 out of 5 years missing the dance without a coaching change.

This is an ugly season and no amount of posturing from Gary will change that. We're NIT bound -- but I will bet my season tickets that Gary is already thinking a 7-9 season will get him in and he will start making comments about how tough the league is this year and how a 7-9 record should qualify for the NCAA's.

He's not that great of a coach and while he's done well at MD - he IS NOT an elite coach at all. Good coach who did a great job rebuilding the program.. No more and no less

I wasn't a Terp fan until I watched a couple of their big upsets. Las Veas doesn't have anything to cheer about these days. Everytime I watched North Carolina, Oklahoma or UConn they lost. Pitt relies on their great athletes. Didn't watch Louisville this year but it will be interesting having Pitino in the mix. This is shaping up to be an exciting tournament and I'm glad Maryland made it, they play with a lot of heart and are unbelievable on the boards considering their size.

Well, our football team beat a higher-ranked Cal team. Our basketball team might as well do likewise. Not optimistic about beating Memphis though. Kinda makes me wish we were a #12 or #13 seed. We could potentially be facing a #5 and a #4 seed. That would have given the Terps a better chance of making it to the Sweet 16.

I'm still working off all the pounds I accumlated on me b/c of that dining hall. They still got that rotisserie chicken place?

When I was at Wicomico Hall we were the roudiest dorm on campus. Boy were we proud of that. We loved sitting in our corner dorm room and using our megaphone to heckle kids walking to class at the business building. We would regularly get Mike Mardisech (spelling) with our megaphone.

There was one game at Cole were we ate some acid and went to the game and sat on the floor behind the one basket by the band.

Ahh, good times at UMD. Back than the team regularly made the big dance with good seeding too.

Barno I think you are mistaken. According to the ACC website the Terps were predicted to finish 7th.

http://www.theacc.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/102608aaa.html

The team was able to turn around a season that looked lost back in November and December. However, the team did not overachive nearly as much as you make it seem. Actually most of the team, aside from Greivis (and Neal at the end of the year) underachieved all season. This isn't one of Gary's greatest coaching feats and it sad that you and other fans are portraying it that way.

I am an alum. I watched the NC State, Wake and Duke games and felt proud at the way the team carried itself. When Duke's head coach says he thinks Gary Williams did a fantastic job take that as a major compliment from one who should know. Gary Williams has class and for those of you who don't recognize this I feel sad for you ability to see character as meaning something. He is also one hell of a coach. Go Terps. JSG

go Terps!

Way to shout back at em Barno, and in response to your point about the Duke fan you'd be surprised how often I find that kind of thing to be true. Look at the Redskins coverage on this site and all you see is comments about how J Campbell needs to go. However, talk to Steelers fans, Ravens fans, I've even come across Dallas fans with nothing but respect for our QB.

Somehow people seem to have optimism about the Nats who in my opinion are the most down and out of all the DC franchises (granted I'm still an O's fan so it doesn't bother me that much).

Point being DC area has some whiny fickle fans, or at least this site has some trollish MFers.

Anyway Gary Williams is the man, go Terps, LETS ROCK IT DEEP IN THIS DANCE!

The comments on this blog have become unreadable. What a sad way to mark a great day for Terp fans.

The vitriol directed against Yanda and Prisbell is unwarranted in any event - reporters report; they're not there to serve as advocates for local teams - but it's really bizarre given that Maryland began playing its best basketball after the three-part series.

'Nuff said.

I think it will be a good game, but the only one for either team since Memphis awaits and Calipari has a long memory of Exree Hipp doing a victory boogie. (I know, right, that's still in my head.)

Montgomery is a good coach but I wouldn't necessarily say he's a better game coach than Sweaty. Also, the Pac 10 just wasn't that good this year.

We MD fans also need to tip one to Coach K, who rather staunchly defended our record at yesterday's postgame presser. Think what you want about him but when he talks, everybody listens. Thanks Coach.

Congratulations to Gary and his team for a fine overall season - some bumps along the way but some significant wins, both in = North Carolina, Wake Forest - the ACC and out of league - Michigan State. Michigan - and making it into the Big Dance. California is a good matchup for the Terps. It will be a good game with the Terps winning out. I am the No. 1 Terrapin fan in Asheville, NC and have had some moments to gloat to my friends here, although I sure wish we could have done better against Duke. The thing is, we're in. Gary has done a fine coaching job with this group of guys - smaller than most teams we play, but hanging right in there, winning 20 games and going dancing.Go Terps! Fear the Turtle!

Of course it helped that the delivery guys never checked for id's and usually just wanted to smoke up with you.

As for Berkley Apts. what a dump. Who knows how many times we saw the PG County Swat Team making raids up and down the streets surrounding that area. We even saw them use a SWAT-type tank one time.

Also, while in CP I found the best place to go booze it up was at the UMD Golf Course bar. Much more relaxed, chilled atmosphere. Plus you got all the free popcorn you wanted and if you wanted after a few drinks you could go out and try to hit golf balls and slice 'em onto Adelphi Road. It probably helped too being roommates with the bartenders and having them rarely actually charge for drinking the beer on tap.

Definitely better than Bentley's/Cornerstone/Santa Fe and whatever that other bar was that got closed down for pretty much being an underage drinking establishment where all you had to do was turn ur id upside down and have 5 bucks underneath it when you got to the bouncer.

Too bad too the county/city forced that cool headshop to close down. Got some good pieces from that store along with my "Maryland Bong Team" tshirt that I still have and wear.

Its like I said a few weeks ago here and elsewhere in this argument about Maryland basketball. Its about expectations.

Barney and company are so excited about a 13 loss season and a #10 seed that they are bringing up old posts and pounding their chest.

Well, this ALUM still has a major problem with the lack of recruiting in recent years. This ALUM still thinks that the Maryland basketball program should be much stronger right now.

Everyone knows Gary is a great coach but he's been a horrible recruiter and a 10 seed doesnt change that. I expect more from this program. VCU, where I went to grad school, got an 11 seed and Im actually more excited about that.

A double digit seed is fine for VCU, not for the Terps. And having high expectations doesnt make me any less of an ALUM or a fan.

This is Gary's single greatest coaching achievement. He has done more with less talent than any other coach in the nation. He is probably the best teacher, motivator, and game coach in college basketball today. He is not the best recruiter, but, he is the best coach. He will teach his guys and motivate them to play harder and smarter than other teams. He is better than any Wiz coach we have had in 25 years. He is not only the face of Maryland basketball. He is the face of Maryland University Sports. Look at all the critics who said NIT. They were yelling NIT the year we won the national championship. People have no idea how competitive the ACC is. But Gary regularly beats teams with more talent. How else do you explain the fact that Gary's Terps have beaten more number one ranked teams than any other team in the nation the past 10 years? He is the MAN.

LOL @ Barno1. The naysayers are one thing but unlike a King, Gary Williams can be questioned and the heat comes with the territory. The problem has been that the heat was never turned up as high as it was this year. He did wonders and every naysayer knew he could and was mad that he wasn't.

GET OVER IT. Nobody is eating crow, they are just happy that the Terps are in the tournament. If Gary performs belows expectations next year the naysayers will come back and it will still be justified. This is a business about a team we all love. We give Gary grief and we give him props and he earns both.

Berth Caps Long Season
Throughout a season full of on- court intrigue and off-court tumult, Gary Williams was able to keep moving forward while leading the Terps to the NCAA tournament.

I love how this is the sports headline. Good job Steve Yanda of now trying to get hits on your writing after the terps make the tournament. You don't belong in this city. I've been lucky enough to been around for incredible consistency and the ultimate triumph as a fan in 2002. I was at cole for 9 pts 54 seconds and for almost all of 2002s undefeated home season. I love this program. To have these guys come in and just trash the program to make some cheap headlines pissed me off to no end. Gary and the terps have been the only team in town for over a decade! I love the skins but common ever since snyder has been around we're not a legitimate franchise. Gary has made the terps just that. 2 straight final fours and a national championship 7 years ago and this newspaper turns their back on us just like that? Why because Georgetown made a final four? That bet worked out real well for them this year. Its embarrassing how little class / respect the post has shown in respect to maryland, thankfully, gary just uses that stuff to motivate himself and his team even more...

Newspapers don't have to show respect to anyone. Newspapers report the news.

Good gravy.

Berth Caps Long Season
Throughout a season full of on- court intrigue and off-court tumult,

Hey Yanda, Don't forget that you are the one who brought most of the off-court tumult trying to be Woodward and Bernstein. You're reporting on a basketball team, not Watergate. Get off the sports page if you want to be an investigative reporter.

"Where do you think Georgetown, George Mason, UVA, VA Tech, and George Washington will be seeded? I assume they had a better season since I did not read any 3 part series in the Post about the crappy state of their program."

Skins1100 has a point. The Post's three-part series by Steve Y. is looking pretty stupid right about now.

Steve Yanda - you've come a long way from the Marquette Tribune... Your editor has still not seen fit to print any letters about your 3-part, 5-page article other than the short one about how recruits want to play for the cool JTIII - who will be watching the Terps on TV this year. I like the comment about switching to the Sun - they cover the Terps and the Orioles and don't consider Va Tech and VA (both also watching on TV this year) local teams. Great story this year is the Terps passion, heart, persistence and making it back to the tournament.

A story citing 'speculation of a possible NCAA violations between Under Armour and UMD' is not the news, its digging for dirt

tony28: Don't forget the Wizard. He practically carried this team through the darkest days. Nice to see Walt give GW props on CSN yesterday.

Perhaps the greatest terp of all (the Wizard), because he stayed when he didn't have to. You are correct, he deserves a mention.

dont want to get off topic, but our ladies also represented with a national championship, which is no doubt the greatest womans title ever! against Duke no less. and our mens soccer team just won the national championship. we could go on about the Terps representing this City.

Washington Post gave us credit for decades, until these jokers showed up. Marquette Tribune? are you serious? what a joke.
