The Final Bracket. I'm Tired.

Here you go, Barno -- my final bracket. I have emerged from the dark room, crumpled sheets of paper in hand, and have made my decision. In the middle of the night a few nights ago, I scribbled two words on a piece of paper and showed it to a person. That person told me to go to take a hike, but the two words were as follows: Patty Mills.

He is now back, and will get healthier as the days go by. As I weighed Saint Mary's vs. Penn State I looked at it like this: Yes, Penn State did everything it could during conference play to prove it was NCAA worthy. But I also think Saint Mary's did everything it could during conference play to prove it was NCAA worthy. If it had Mills the whole time, maybe it beats Gonzaga once, maybe not, but it's record would be even stronger.

Now who did everything it could during non-conference play? Well, that one is easy. Saint Mary's, a team no high major wants to play, beat San Diego State on a neutral court and beat Utah State in the bracket buster. What did Penn State do? It played the nation's 307th-ranked non-conference schedule -- just an awful non-conference sked. I heard Mike Slive say earlier today that there are no "exhibition" seasons. Maybe that was a message to the folks in Happy Valley.

Saint Mary's stays in! Penn State out! And that's it.

Would be pretty sweet playing WVU. I would go if it's not on the west coast. If only to get a chance to find the WVU hick who threw a cheap shot at me before the MD-WVU game in 07. I got him pretty good after chasing him down when he tried to run away, but still, would be nice to see him again.

Let's face it. We are toast.

Another disappointing season with a team that just doesn't measure up.

We aren't even a factor in the ACC, much less nationally.

Missing the tournament for the 4th time in 5 years is simply unacceptable.

Our program is a real disappointment and I am disgusted.

Let's hear it Koolaid drinkers.

Gary should use the game against NC State to get ready for the NIT.

Maryland plays in the NIT so often it should consider becoming the title sponsor.

Turtle Soup, brought to you by Gary Williams. Simply warm and serve.

Barno,

We ARE toast. You think beating NC State means anything?

C'mon all of you FOG's, let's hear about how the Terps are going to win one or two in the ACC.

Don't bother to make your MSG reservations. They won't get that far in the NIT.

Why not just deal with the bottom line: We are going to miss the tournament this year for the 4th time in 5 years.

Unacceptable.

Gary's responsibility.

Posted by: petecard | February 19, 2009 10:32 AM

Right now we have a mediocre program.

The FOG's think Gary should be able to write his own ticket.

Gary's contract will be up in 2-3 years. That's where the focus should be.

making the NCAA is not a worthy goal in and of itself

Posted by: petecard | February 28, 2009 12:17 PM

Even if we make it, that is NOT the benchmark we should have for our program

10 seed. Where do you think Georgetown will be seeded? I assume they had a better season since I did not read and 3 part series in the Post about the crappy state of their program.

Yeah, you are right... 10 seed is more like it.

Since the Georgia Dome is not Greivis Vasquez' house (but Cameron Indoor is?) , the Maryland Turtles will be riding back to College Park waiting anxiously for their Invitation to the Not-Invited Tournament. I'd like to be the first to say farewell to Gary Williams. Thanks for the memories and enjoy that early retirement!

Enough about this team and the NCAA Tournament. Even if they got in, what are they going to do? Nothing, but lose in the first round. They don't win away from home people and the team is not talented enough, so move on and be happy for the NIT and a match-up with George Mason at Patriot Center.

Whatever it takes for Williams to resign.
