Vasquez: My Focus is Maryland

Hey, everyone. This is Eric. I talked with Greivis Vasquez a little bit after Maryland’s win against North Carolina State. He asked me to make clear one more time, as I did in today’s short story, that Vasquez has his mind totally focused on the team and would never want to say anything that would be a distraction to the team. He is focused on getting Maryland to the NCAA tournament and he is not thinking about the NBA at this time.

On a related note, when Vasquez brought up Lance Stephenson to me in the locker room on Wednesday, that constituted a very minor secondary violation. Very minor. A school official told me Maryland has – or will – inform the ACC of the matter, but it does not even warrant passing along the information to the NCAA.

Maryland is one win away from the NCAA tournament. Will the Terrapins do it?

Let's face it. We are toast.

Another disappointing season with a team that just doesn't measure up.

We aren't even a factor in the ACC, much less nationally.

Missing the tournament for the 4th time in 5 years is simply unacceptable.

Gary must do a better job recruiting. Making the tournament next year will NOT be enough. We need to be there almost every year.

Our program is a real disappointment and I am disgusted.

Let's hear it Koolaid drinkers.

Gary should use the game against NC State to get ready for the NIT.

Maryland plays in the NIT so often it should consider becoming the title sponsor.

Turtle Soup, brought to you by Gary Williams. Simply warm and serve.

Hilarious comments from the Terrapin Insider Hall of Shame MVP. Petecard has about as much credibility around here as the snot coming out of Coach K's left nostril. What a joke that guy is.

Hey Barno1 = AKA Gary's Caddie. When we lose to Wake and the lose GV to the pros and miss the tourney again next for 5 out of 6 would that be time for Gary to leave? Or would even 9 out 10 years be ok for you? It doesn't matter? We could miss the next 10 years say, but its all good because Gary's your guy?

Posted by: restonhoops | March 12, 2009 10:00 PM | Report abuse

Barno,

We ARE toast. You think beating NC State means anything?

It's Koolaid drinkers like you who allow Gary to skate when he hasn't done jack for 5 years.

If hell freezes over and we make the NCAA Tournament this year, what will that mean?

Our team does not measure up with the elite programs. Can't you see that? Are you that blind?

So, our hopes for next year depend on the totally self-absorbed GV staying and the successful recruitment of Stephenson, a shooting guard? When is Gary going to get some (or even one) top big men?

Barno, medicocre might be fine for you but not for most of us. That's why you are in the Koolaid Drinkers Hall of Mediocrity Bliss.

Eric,

I don't buy GV's claim for a nanno second. He never stops thinking about himself.

And it's his job to know better than to talk to you or anyone in the media about other specific recruits. We all know that the players receive instructions on NCAA rules.

Here is some advice for him: Just shut up!

Posted by: petecard | March 12, 2009 10:36 PM | Report abuse

Thanks for pointing out the violation Eric.

Please be sure to stay up our ass to point out anymore violations in the future.

Restonhoops, why are you referring to the Terps as "we." You've made it clear countless times that you are anything BUT a fan of Maryland. Who do you think you are kidding?

Posted by: Barno1 | March 12, 2009 10:38 PM | Report abuse

Or would even 9 out 10 years be ok for you? It doesn't matter?

Posted by: restonhoops | March 12, 2009 10:00 PM

Of course it would be ok as far as Gary's job security is concerned. It's not in any jeopardy, it never has been in any jeopardy, and it never will be in any jeopardy. That's why the retards like you and Petecard are too stupid to understand. No matter how much b**ching and moaning you do, there is absolutely nothing in the world you can do to get Gary Williams fired.

He's here to say, get used to it.

I think the answer to such problems it to stop talking to you.

Posted by: UMDT | March 12, 2009 10:44 PM | Report abuse

Wow Eric. Thanks for the hard work. Your narcing is always appreciated. I actually told Lance Stephenson to come to MD and I am a MD grad. ZOMG!

What do you hate about Maryland? There has to be some personal reason for your hate?

Oh well, you present everyone with another sign the WaPo is dying...and dying fast!

Hey, Michael Jordan was in the crowd at the UNC game last weekend. I think it was a recruiting violation because he was flashing Air Jordan NIKE gear to all of the UNC recruits in attendance...go get on it Eric and dig up the dirt on that and JTII at Georgetown....oh wait you only cover Maryland when its manufactured negative publicity. what a hack

Posted by: strza1212 | March 12, 2009 10:58 PM | Report abuse

That's funny, I see smoke but see no fire....

You essentially fished for that quote from GV and have now turned it into another "violation". Way to go...bet that took a lot of investigation! This sort of ethical product is another reminder of why I didn't go to New Brunswick. Hacks in every sense of the word.

LOL MD could miss the tourney 9 out of 10 times and Gary would be fine? Is he your God? That statement right there made clear you don't care about MD or MD basketball you care about Gary Williams. When he gets canned and takes over at Mount St. Mary's you can drive out there and be a Gary booster. If GV bolts and we don't get Stephenson Gary is GONE, BABY, GONE. Get used to it Barno.

Hey Eric, I heard Gary Williams gets to claim you as a dependent on is taxes this year. Maybe stop being a pseudo-Woodward by creating stories and stick to reporting softball questions.

You have just proven how detached from reality you are. MD just won their 19th game for the 13th straight year, and you think if Vasquez goes pro and we don't land Lance Stephenson, that Gary Williams will be fired. You are beyond delusional.

Posted by: Barno1 | March 13, 2009 12:06 AM | Report abuse

time will tell, let's see how things unfold. Maybe GV stays and we get Stephenson and MD is in the top 10 all year. No one other than you and Gary care about your 19 win statement. MD plays so many home games against the weak sisters of the poor that 19 wins is almost assured. People want to see us consistently in the tournament and a in the mix (top 10-15) every other year or so. Kings of NIT ain't cutting it big boy. Let Gary know this summer when you're crusing down to the eastern shore with him for some golf while all the real coaches are out working on getting the talent they need to play with the big boys.

Mr Prisbell, Why you would go to such lengths to alienate one of the biggest fan bases reading your paper baffles me. I for one gave you the benefit of the doubt, sort of, after your article, but after this blog post it is clear to me you are not out for reporting but for some ridiculous self serving reason to try to prove to people you are something. My subscription to your paper has been canceled, my advertising is gone, and this blog will not be read anymore. Good day.

Ha! The thought of Barno playing golf or caddying for Gary is hilarious. That said, I agree with Barno 100%. Regardless of what they do tonight, Gary deserves a ton of credit for getting this team on the cusp of the NCAA Tournament in the toughest league in the country.

NBA? Are you kidding me? Maybe Europe? This kid couldn't make an nba team

Posted by: mcmelton | March 13, 2009 9:44 AM | Report abuse

seriously mcmelton? Greivis will be on an NBA roster within 2 years, guaranteed.

Barno seems to think that the people who expect Gary to be accountable also expect or want him to be fired.

Most rational people know that he won't be fired for several reasons, but perhaps most importantly for economic ones.

But his contract will be up in what, 2-3 years? That's where the focus should be.

Get a life Barno. Being Gary's drycleaner, towel boy and apologist is pathetic.

Actually, you need to get a life if you spend all your time antagonizing fans of the coach who single-handedly resurrected the program from the ashes, brought us 12 NCAA trips in 15 years, beat 20 top 5 teams, went to the sweet 16 7 times, went to the final four twice, won a national championship, then followed that up with an ACC championship 2 years later. You need to get a life if you attack this man after every loss, because you simply do not get it. He's here to stay, he's not changing, and it's time you get used to it.

Greivas dished out 10 beautiful dimes last night. Think he was thinking about his teammates then.

Putnam is there another NBA expansion planned that I am not aware of? GV is a pretty good college combo guard. He isn't a pure pg and he doesn't have the talent to be a nba 2 guard. If you are saying he can get a few 10 day contracts to be the 13th man, then okay I'll say that's possible. But the thought of him being drafted is laughable.

That is the only explanation for his lap dog commentary.
