Will people shut up about Gary not being able to recruit now?

Sweet. Good time for a strong guard in the recruiting class.

It helps, believe me. |

What a huge development. I was not familiar with him until today but he looks like a guy with some actual academic interests to go with his big time talent. I know it is radically premature to speculate, but even if he is projected high in the draft while an underclassman I can definitely seem him staying at least 3 years. Just seems like a legitimately great kid.

Also, on the question of can his early verbal commit really be depended upon to be his "final answer" -- in his case I definitely think so. The kid is from Portland. Those people are much more old school in general, in a good way when it comes to things like really meaning what you say.

Here's some more info on Terrence Ross.

#31 on Rivals for 2010 class; He loves the crowd, the excitement, the coaches, the system, Comcast, and the tradition; Was the player of the year in Oregon as a sophomore before transferring to Montrose Christian for both the academics and better basketball; Is an excellent shooter, particularly the three; Gets to the rim and finishes; Anticipates things on defense

Oregon has produced some good players in recent years, such as Kevin Love and Kyle Singler. Shouldn't forget that 3 months ago this young man was telling people his dream was to play for Louisville...

Gary can't recruit! Gary doesn't recruit local guys! Where are you idiots now??

"Gary really struggles with recruiting" - Eric Prisbell

Gee, Eric, this signing doesn't really help your argument does it? Perhaps you were "wrong"? Not that you would ever admit such a thing...

Posted by: Barno1 | April 25, 2009 9:56 AM | Report abuse

So we got a verbal commitment...for a guy who will play in 2010.

That just shows everyone what an unbelievable recruiter Gary is!!!!

Pass the Koolaid

PeteCard,

I think that I can fairly and succinctly summarize your numerous e-mails over the past four months:

Gary, while we (fans) appreciate your 2001 Final Four appearance and your 2002 National Championship, you have let the program decline considerably. Therefore, it is time to replace you with someone who is more dedicated to recruiting.

Okay. But getting rid of Gary Williams does not solve the problem. You must replace him. With whom? Jeff Capel? Sure. do you really think he would come? Jay Wright? Absolutely. I think he is doing fine at Villanova. Why would he want to leave? As a matter fact, why would any established and successful coach want to come to MD after Kathy Worthington publicly proved that your MD's very own athletic department doesn't not fully support their successful basketball coach?

Maybe you have a coach in mind that I do not know about. Please, if you don't mind, let's hear some names.

The other problem is buying out Gary's contract, especially in these times of slashed government budgets. Pete, do you have any solutions to this quandry?

Maybe your frustration and anger should be direct at Debbie Yow and not Gary Williams.

Your criticisms of Gary Williams are valid reasonable. However, complaining about it but not offering solutions simply does not make for very interesting reading on this blog.

Posted by: larry31 | April 26, 2009 9:30 PM

Actually, his criticisms of Gary Williams are neither valid nor reasonable. Every piece of news regarding the MD bball program, whether it be good news or bad, this guy tries to spin as negatively on Gary Williams as possible. Even good news, like the above signing of a top 40 prospect, he tries to spin negatively. The guy claims to be a MD fan yet is obsessed with coming onto a Terps blog and trashing the man that built this program from scratch. He, as others have pointed out, is clearly some loser Duke fan with nothing better to do with his time. Engaging him in debate as you have just attempted to do only encourages more of his painfully idiotic comments.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Barno1,

Since PeteCard hasn't responded to my non-confrontational invitation to discuss the pitfalls of getting rid of Gary Williams, I have to concede that you are correct. He seems to just want to whine and complain. He gets thrown into to the same group as McPoopyPoop.

If you have been paying attention to the Gators and Billy Donovan, I think you will agree that their situation very closely matches MD's.

Florida won back-to-back NCs and has been relegated to the NIT the last couple of years. Apparently, the Gators have "fallen" even faster than MD. More interesting are the reasons. Donovan has seen his coaching staff decimated by promotions to head coaching postions elsewhere and he has had alot of players unexpectedly leave or transfer. When a head coach loses his assistants, he loses a significant portion of his recruiting base and the coaching relationships that keep players from transferring.

I believe the argument about Gary's recruiting abilities are, at this juncture, a moot point. His staff has been stable and in place for a number of years and we have seen the quality of recruits increase in recent years (Hayes and Vazquez to Milbourne, Gregory and Tucker to Williams and Padgett to Stoglin and Ross).

Now the Terps are poised to win the 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 NCAA titles.

Poop guy, say it with me: If Gary doesn't win the NCAA tournament every year, he should be fired! Yeah, that's the ticket! Yeah!

Not like Gary has ever done anything for us. 20+ wins over top 5 teams. 13 NCAA tournaments in the last 16 years. 12 trips to the ACC semis. 7 Sweet 16s. 3 ACC reg/tourney championships. 2 final fours. 1 national championship, and a state of the art, $100+ million dollar arena. Oh, and the little known fact that he's put more guys in the NBA than any coach in the country outside of Durham, NC in the last 15 years and beaten the hated Dukies more than any coach in the country over the last decade.

But yeah, Gary really sucks, right Poop guy? Md fans shouldn't support a coach like that, right Poop guy? If he doesn't win the NCAA tourney every year, we should fire him right Poop guy? And we should hire a woman instead to be our coach, right Poop guy (Poop guy actually said he wanted Brenda Frese to coach our boys! Hahahah!!!).

IF there's a less intelligent human being on earth than MR. Poop guy, I haven't yet come across him/her. The guy is brain dead. But is this surprising given that he has openly bragged on here about all the "acid" he did when he went to MD. What an unbelievable loser. I actually feel sorry for him.

Posted by: brianxp | April 27, 2009 4:23 PM | Report abuse

Ross looks like a good pull for Gary. Let's get a few more before we declare a big change in things. The GV and Stephenson choices will have a lot to say about the 09-10 Terps. Someone was talking about who would want to come to MD. I think both Capel and Wright come here in a second.

* ACC school
* Top 15 program
* large supportive fanbase
* great, great facility
* hotbed of local talent from tide water VA area to Baltimore

Does anyone know who led the recruitment of Ross? Was that CD?

Posted by: restonhoops | April 27, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

Sorry guys if I don't read your comments every day this time of year....

But I actually have never said we should fire Gary and I have major problems with Debbie Yow, who is obviously NOT commited to Maryland being an elite men's program.

I have said that Gary's contract should not be extended and I am sorry he has so long left.

As for replacements, there are great candidates every year. Arizona just got one with the Xavier coach. Kansas replaced Roy Williams with Bill Self, who may be better than Roy.

Barno is an idiot who thinks Gary bulit the program from scratch. Gary came in during a very difficult time and brought the program back... through hard work. He won his championship and now doesn't work that hard...especially in recruiting. He has his tenure....

Give us a break...WE DON"T HAVE THE TALENT TO BE AN ELITE PROGRAM and we won't as long as Gary is here. His career is OVER.

Stop drinking the Koolaid and get ready...in a few years to get the program back.

Barno if you don't mind, I'll take this one. I don't like responding to Petecard, mainly because I agree he's a Duke fan and that here's only to get a rise out of us MD fans. But the above claim is too absurd not to address.

Gary Williams DID build this program from scratch, and if believing this makes you and idiot than 99.99999% of serious college basketball fans are idiots because we ALL believe Gary took a program that was in worse shape than perhaps any other major division I school in the country and built it into a national championship team.

Petecard, it's you that's the real idiot here and everyone on here knows this. Well everyone except the drug addict troll Poopy McPoop. Pete, for the last time please take your bluedevils-loving arse back to Durham and go ruin some other school's blog. You suck!

You guys have horrible reading comprehension. I like how, after describing running into Terrance Morris at the South Campus Dining Hall while being under the influence of hallucingenics, you all deduce that I'm some Dead-Head, Gary Garcia loving, acid freak. Obviously none of you were english majors.

Also love how someone said that I thought Brenda should coach the mens team. Classic, classic stuff.

You guys are beyond bonkers. Put the red and black and yellow kool aid down. Maybe someone spiked THAT with some acid.

There was one game at Cole were we ate some acid and went to the game and sat on the floor behind the one basket by the band.

I had a great conversation with Terrance Morris at the South Campus Dining Hall one morning not long after eating a few hits of acid.

it was the real-deal acid. Of course the fungus is really the way to go.

Gary Garcia? You mean Jerry Garcia you idiot?? Well I never said you were a Dead-Head or Gary Garcia (hah!) loving, but I do know one thing, you're a loser. I think you probably know this at this point in your life. The fact that you think it's cool to brag about doing acid and meeting Terrance (sic) Morris, or doing acid and going to a game makes you a loser and there's nothing you can say that can change that.

Hey Poops, still afraid to share your name and year you graduated with us?

Hahahahahahahah! what a loser

I dont see you giving your real name. Kinda ironic that you call for someone to give their real name, yet you yourself hid behind the internet handle 'terpsfan09'

Gary built the program from scratch? You are either 18 or on crack or both. That is a major insult to the left handed and many great players including Elmore, Lucas, Bias, and the Wizard who's decision to stay at md had as big an impact than anything the godlike Gary did.

Posted by: restonhoops | April 27, 2009 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Yes, from scratch. Meaning MD was handed by far the harshest sanctions the NCAA has handed any bball program in the last 25 years: no tv, no post season, probation that no recruit would want to come into. That is called building from scratch.

With all due respect to the Left-hander (not known as the Left "Handed" dir da dir) when he came here, his teams could play in the postseason right away. They weren't banned from tv. There was no probation. There was no stigma from the Len Bias death. He was able to recruit big names right away. But Gary was given nothing to work with, had to start from the bottom up with all the cards stacked against him. It's sad how little some supposed Terps "fans" know about MD bball history.

Vasquez is a hot dog with a big mouth. He won't lead the Terps to anything next year.

If he finally gets to the NBA they will eat him up and spit him out.

See ya!

Posted by: Barno1 | April 28, 2009 12:05 AM | Report abuse

More hilarious guaranteed predictions from Nostradamus...

This from the guy who made the following predictions:

C'mon all of you FOG's, let's hear about how the Terps are going to win one or two in the ACC.

Don't bother to make your MSG reservations. They won't get that far in the NIT.

Posted by: petecard | February 18, 2009 11:05 AM

Let's face it. We are toast.

Another disappointing season with a team that just doesn't measure up.

We aren't even a factor in the ACC, much less nationally.

Missing the tournament for the 4th time in 5 years is simply unacceptable.

Our program is a real disappointment and I am disgusted.

Let's hear it Koolaid drinkers.

Posted by: petecard | March 9, 2009 6:30 PM

Gary should use the game against NC State to get ready for the NIT.

Maryland plays in the NIT so often it should consider becoming the title sponsor.

Turtle Soup, brought to you by Gary Williams. Simply warm and serve.

Posted by: petecard | March 9, 2009 8:56 AM

Barno,

We ARE toast. You think beating NC State means anything?

Why not just deal with the bottom line: We are going to miss the tournament this year for the 4th time in 5 years.

Unacceptable.

Gary's responsibility.

You would think by this point Nostradamus would stop with the guaranteed predictions after being wrong every time before... but, when he's off his meds he can't help himself.

Terpsfan09,

Just ignore Poopy Mc-No-Life aka "O's Exec." He's not worth the trouble because he's a troll who just gets his jolly's stirring it up on various blogs under various monikers.

People who think that Gary didn't rebuild this program and take it to new heights are just flat out foolish. Maryland basketball has never had the success that it has had under Gary.

"The Lefthander" had some great teams, was a great recruiter, and did a great deal for Maryland basketball but unfortunately, he could never quite get over the hump.

Posted by: The_Brown_Vice_President | April 28, 2009 10:22 AM | Report abuse

yawn. Wake me up when the story telling is done. There is no doubt that we were down after the harsh probation the NCAA slapped us with. However as a MD FAN I had zero doubt that MD would come back better than ever. If you think this program is as good as it can be the last 7 years then YOU have a low opinion of MD indeed.

Posted by: restonhoops | April 28, 2009 11:37 AM | Report abuse

Lefty made Maryland basketball and I was there when he arrived. We never became the UCLA of the East. He recruited awesome talent, but he didn't measure up on thacoaching side, particularly in-game nail-biters.

Lot's of program have been re-built and Gary did a great job. But he stopped being an effective recruiter and he no longer has the drive to sustain the program.

Elite basketball programs don't accept that. They move on.

I am a Maryland grad from 1972. I love the Terps. But we should be sooooo much better and it is you koolaid drinkers that allow Debbie Yow and the administration to put us where we are, right in the middle of the vast pool of mediocrity.

As for terpsfan, I proudly graduated in 2004 with a degree in english, lived my 1st 2 years in Wicomico Hall, ate my fair share of steak and cheese sandwiches on white bread from the South Campus Dining Hall and loved how every woman working out at the Campus Rec Center dressed and tried to look like a prostitute and/or sexier than every other woman working out in there. Good stuff!

I bet if Stephenson commits to MD though, we'll see some comments from Petecard about how this is no good because Stephenson is A) not a local recruit and B) will be gone in a year. Like Barno said, Petecard will spin any news, good or bad, negatively.

Beas13

I would take those rumors with a grain of salt. I also read recently that Painter was announcing on friday that he will play for Maryland. Both can't be true but I would tend to believe Painter will come here before Stephenson would.
