Mid-July Football Crystal Ball

Well, it's July, which means:

a.) There's little of note going on now that Lance Stephenson has finally made up his mind.

and

b.) All the glossy football preview mags with their preposterously early prognostications have been beckoning from the racks for awhile now.

So let's take a look at where some of these publications have the Terrapins finishing this season. (HT to the estimable Tony Barnhart of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, who compiled these and, in his crystal ball, has Maryland finishing last in the ACC Atlantic Division.)

Athlon: Florida State, N.C. State, Clemson, Wake Forest, Boston College, Maryland

Lindy’s: Florida State, Wake Forest, Clemson, N.C. State, Boston College, Maryland

Phil Steele: Clemson, Florida State, Boston College (tie 3rd), N.C. State (tie 3rd), Wake Forest, Maryland

Sporting News: Florida State, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Clemson, Maryland, Boston College

The Kickoff: N.C. State, Wake Forest, Clemson, Florida State, Maryland, Boston College

So that's four last-place predictions for the Terrapins (including Barnhart), and two fifth-place predictions. Yowza.

What do you think? Cast a vote in in the poll, and give your reasons in the comments.

Let's Go Terp

Music to my ears. This team is gonna suprise alot of people this year.

where is Barno to predict an Orange bowl victory?

Posted by: jpfterps | July 9, 2009 3:38 PM | Report abuse

Talent the last few years has been mediocre. Don't see how the Terps will improve....time to prepare to send Ralph Friedgen off in three years.

Posted by: ejharrisjr40 | July 9, 2009 5:01 PM | Report abuse

BC is going to be really down this year along with Wake. I see Clemson taking the division with FSU, UMD, and NCSU battling for the 2 through 4 spots. NCState is the one team that could really go out and surprise some people. Maryland will probably finish a solid 8-4 (5-3 ACC) this season, but probably get relegated to the Champs or Music City Bowl. Everything this season for the Terps will come down to the play of Chris Turner and the health of DaRell Scott. If they both have good, productive, healthy years, the Terps will finish in the top half of the conference. If those two are not starting halfway through the season, they may struggle to make it to a bowl.

Who the heck is Matt Bonesteel?

Posted by: MDFan | July 9, 2009 5:04 PM | Report abuse

These are some of the same people who predicted MD basketball would finish last in the ACC as well, correct? The last time Md was picked last or 2nd to last in the league the team went on to go 7-1 in the ACC and won the conference.

Let's see, MD has never finished last, or even close to last, in Ralph Friedgen's tenure at MD. The bet here is in his 9th season as head coach, they again won't finish last or close to last.

MD has a 3rd year starting QB for the very first time in Ralph Friedgen's tenure at MD. The last time Friedgen had a 3rd year starting QB under his supervision, a kid named Joe Hamilton went on to win NCAA Quarterback of the Year with Fridge as his O-coordinator. Now I'm not saying the same will happen with Chris Turner, but expect big, big numbers out of Napoleon this year. And expect him to be in the running for All ACC.

Add his senior leadership and experience to the most explosive RB possibly in MD history in Da'Rel Scott, a First Team All ACC selection as only a sophomore last year. A kid who was hampered by injuries all year and missed several games, but still managed to run for over 1100 yards including 175 in our bowl games (all in the 2nd HALF). His sidekick is a very good change of pace RB in Davin Meggett--together you have one of the more formidable tandems in all of college football.

The receiving group loses 1st round draft pick Heyward-Bey, but they return 5-6 guys with in-game experience. The Terps O-line is young, but is bigger, stronger, and taller than any O-line in recent memory.

The D-line may be our biggest weakness, anchored by only one senior in one big, mean s.o.b in Travis Ivey... but behind this group is a very deep and experienced secondary and a linebacking corps that includes one of the best defenders in the nation in Alex Wujack--who was 2nd Team All ACC as a sophomore.

Our special teams unit is solid as always with a 3rd year punter returning who was 1st team All ACC and one of the best punters in the nation last year. Our return man/WR Torrey Smith set an ACC record last year as freshman with the most return yards in league history. We don't really know how our kicking game will turn out, but it can't be any worse than Obi Obinna Egekezie-Ekezie right?

But possibly more important than any of this is our schedule, which if we get by California in the nationally televised labor day weekend game (a team we were up 3 TDs on late in the game last year) we potentially could be 7-1 or 6-2 going into our bye week and the brutal last 4 games of the season.

At that point in the season, no one will be talking about the Terps as a "last place" team. People will be too busy wondering if MD can hold on to win the division that they've come so close to winning 2 of the last 3 years.

Posted by: Barno1 | July 9, 2009 6:45 PM | Report abuse

"The D-line may be our biggest weakness."

Agreed.

They finish 4th.

Terps will be a great offensive team as Barno suggests, I have no doubts.

Defensively I don't see them any better then last year which was porus at best.

- Ray

Posted by: rmcazz | July 9, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

I disagree about our biggest weakness...I think our dline is gonna be nice with the superb youth and Traves Ivey will be a monster (w/ our new D-Coordinator). The biggest weakness is our oline w/ all that youth (however, we have Bruce Campbell coming back who is an absolute monster)

Posted by: merajc86 | July 9, 2009 8:23 PM | Report abuse

To hell with the predictions. Let's go out and win every game! 14 - 0!

Posted by: terpin | July 9, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Are these the same guys that picked Cullen Harper to be POY in the ACC last year?

Posted by: asnis715 | July 9, 2009 10:57 PM | Report abuse

He is just like Joe Gibbs.. football has pased him bye.

Posted by: carolina1 | July 9, 2009 8:43 PM

Man for someone who football has passed by Gibbs sure did fool a lot of teams the last 3 years he was in DC, going to the playoffs twice in those 3 years in without a doubt the toughest division in the NFL.

As for Fridge, 2 of his last 3 years he's had his team in position to win the ACC with a game or two left in the season.

Who are these people who call themselves fans but inexplicably bash the very people who are responsible for the reason why they are fans in the first place?? You don't like Fridge, you're not a fan of Md football. Period.

Posted by: Barno1 | July 9, 2009 10:59 PM | Report abuse

I believe that the Terps will be good. Not great, but good. Turner has lots of experience. If you think we're a last place team, you didn't see DaRell tear it up at the smurfturf bowl; that was IMPRESSIVE! Losing H-B is tough, but as long as we have people who can catch the ball, we'll be fine.

I say good because I think the Noles will take the ACC if they can beat VT in the title game. We have a team that wins impressively (vs. Cal, Clemson) but loses inexplicably (vs. Mid Tenn, UVA). I'll say 8-4. They'll challenge for the Atlantic up until the last 2 week of the regular season.

Posted by: ecglotfelty | July 9, 2009 11:49 PM | Report abuse

Barno1

First off, UMD Football Fans don't post under names such as Carolina1. Don't take the bait.

Secondly, anyone who disparages Coach Gibbs and Fridge in the same sentence must be located and "educated." Spelling "by" as "bye" is proof enough of that.

Third, hasn't the game passed Gary Williams by too? Why wasn't he included? (sarcasm)

Posted by: fushezzi | July 10, 2009 7:54 AM | Report abuse

5th/6th in the Atlantic is about where the Terps belong.

Posted by: Durham2 | July 10, 2009 7:58 AM | Report abuse

For those knocking the D, one huge factor to consider... a new D coach with a history of success, and a D that attacks. That alone will make this D substantially better and a challenger for the division. O-Line will be the biggest question mark - if they come through MD will surprise a lot of people.

Posted by: DBriles10 | July 10, 2009 8:34 AM | Report abuse

Surprise! Suprise! The nationally media picks the Terps last or next to last this year in the division (which they do every year). When are they gonna give the Terps some respect? No way the Terps are gonna finish last in the division. If I remember correctly, the Terps were picked to finished last the year they went to the Orange Bowl. Football is all about having an experienced quarterback, which the Terps have and many of their opponents do not. The O-line and D-line are a concern, however, last year the seniors lost to graduation did not exactly tear it up. Our skills positions on offense are stacked and our secondary is gonna be beast. At linebacker, Moten and Wujciak are future pros. So for the prognosticators: get ready to eat your words!

Posted by: aviscardo | July 10, 2009 10:01 AM | Report abuse

To the Fridge Bashers on here:
Did a little research today. Wanted to see the records of all ACC teams that were in conference when Friedgen took over since 2001. Here are the results:
FSU - 67-36
Umd - 64-36
Clemson - 61-39
GT - 61-42
Wake- 54-44
UVa - 53-47
NCS - 52-47
UNC - 39-58
Duke - 16-67

So, if someone came up to you 8 years ago and asked if you would take a head coach that will have a better record in the ACC than any other team except FSU, you wouldn't take that? If you say no, you didn't follow Terps football prior to the Fridge.

"Guess what out of the 64 suites available only 25 are sold... Why you ask.... Ralph f and his inability to go to a Major bowl in recent years."

Yeah, nothing to do with the economy. Absolutely nothing.

And why were those suites built? Because of all the attention and fans Mark Duffner brought to the Program.

Del-Ray? Do you mean Da'Rel Scott? Wow, what a huge MD fan you must be...you don't even know our best player's name. Beat it, Carolina.

Posted by: Barno1 | July 10, 2009 12:49 PM | Report abuse

wow. And I thought the posts for BB were snarky. Kudos to aviscardo on the W-L stats above. would not have expected that, but we do need to consider the conferences additions of BC, VT and Miami who are all football powerhouses. We compete with the big boys now which makes that BCS berth all the more elusive.

Big question is the o-line. We did lose quite a bit of talent there - all of those guys were at least invited to NFL camps and firdge does have a history of producing NFL caliber o-linemen. I think we'll be good - I call it 9-3 with no stupid losses (M. Tenn St.) for once. Ahhh - its college football preseason - 12-0 and the National Championship!!!!! at least until proven otherwise.

terps season will be determined by how fast the offensive line gets accustomed to the D1 level of football. If they come out are physical and open holes for the run game that will make turner better with an array of talented and experienced wr's to throw the ball to.
on defensive line they have some young studs who should make an immediate impact in zach kerr and deonte arnett giving depth to area of need. if that unit is able to disrupt offenses the lbs and dbs should be able to create TO's and give a offensive a chance for some quick scores with out having to produce lots 80yd 15 play drives.
special teams unit needs to have some game changing plays like the early fridge teams.
the cal game is crucial if the terps can win that game on the road vs a ranked team a lot of confidence is gained.this is probably the only game in question for out of conference games.
In conference play the season hinges on two streches of tough games in october (wake and clemson) and november(nc state,va tech and FSU)assuming the terps win the opener and win 3 of 5 of the tough games 9-3 is reasonable. If they avoid letdowns like they had last season, which I doubt will happen this season. If the o line underperforms then 6-5 maybe even 5-6 are likely. My guess though is somewhere in between probably 8-4 and a trip to music city bowl. 2010 season being the chance for the terps and fridge to make some real noise on the national stage again!

Posted by: carolina1 | July 10, 2009 9:23 PM

Carolina, you really are an idiot. Come find me in section 25 row A, seat 1...I'll be there all year supporting my terps. And disparaging those who sit in 300 level bc they are "cheapo seats"?? Nice elitist comment, what an unbelievable d-bag you must be. (Not to mention the price difference between the lower level and upper level seats at Byrd is not very wide, especially not compared to NFL teams. The people I know who sit upper deck do so not bc they are "cheap" but because it's more a family-friendly environment up there, and in some cases actually have a better view of the game than those of us who are right next to the field)

Carolina has not made a single rationale comment in any of his belligerent posts thus far. And "Del-Ray Scott" is not the name of our best player, guy. You have been exposed. I suggest you go find another team's board to troll and leave the terp board to those that actually know the names of this team's best players.

"I really am a super fan of the Terps but Fridge sucks and should be fired and I don't know our best players names and I spend all my time antagonizing other terps fans"

Posted by: terpsfan09 | July 11, 2009 1:41 PM | Report abuse

Back to talking about the upcoming season. i think the Terps have 9-10 win potential, i really do. i don't think experience is all that important on the offensive line, size and depth are what's key at the college level. And just looking at our roster, we have so many guys that are like 6 ft 4 325 lbs it's almost scary. Ralph has always done a good job coaching our lineman and turning raw potential into all acc studs. Why should now be any different?

With the weapons we have on offense, i see no reason why we can't return to the dominating point scoring machine we were back in the earlier part of this decade. Maybe not quite 32, 33 points per game like we once were, but at least mid to high 20s on average.

Not to mention DHB was not nearly as productive as his top 10 drafting would suggest. Fridge has never relied on one receiver, he has always spread the ball around on offense...and with the 5-6 WRs coming back with experience, and with our nasty RB combo, Turner and the offense should put up a ton of points this year.

To me, it's all about our defensive line. That's our number one question mark heading into the season.

According to y'alls logic that must mean that the majority of voters of previously cited poll aren't "true" Terps fans and are rather part of the "fakey-fan" variety.

Is this true or not? Please express why this is or is not the case. Thanks for your important time barno and the kool-aiders.

And by "most people" of course I'm referring to the poll right here above on this thread where 36% of voters feel the Terps will finish in 3rd.

Only 12% envisions 1st place and 17% predicts 2nd. Combined that's only 29& of the vote believing in a 1st or 2nd place finish.

Unfortunately, also, 15% of voters see a 4th place finish, 10% 5th, and 8% of voters see our beloved Terps bringing up the rear.

Combined that's a whopping 69% of voters who think the Terps will finish the ACC Atlantic in 3rd place or worse.

Yikes!

And yes, I'm also well aware that those numbers add up to 98% but the numbers cited are exactly as shown on the Post's website so take that issue up with them.

Mrs. Krabappel and Principal Skinner were in the closet making babies and I saw one of the babies and then the baby looked at me.

Also, leave it to Section2853498393, someone who self-admittedly is not color-blind, to ruin a perfectly good Ralph Wiggum quote run by throwing in a random quote from Wedding Crashers totally throwing things off balance.

Not that we should expect Section83802828 to watch or quote The Simpsons over a movie, in Wedding Crashers, that had so much potential only to drag and get unnecessarily sentimental towards the end.

No Poopy Nahasapeemapoopilon, voting that the Terps will finish 3rd does not make you a "fakey fan" it makes you a fan with higher expectations than the press.

Trying to reason with a self-admitted drug user is a losing battle.

Light up another Fatty there, Robert Downey and escape from reality some more.

I have to say that these magazine predictions are worthless. If anyone of these writers paid attention to the Maryland program in the Ralph Friedgen era, they would realize the importance to this team of having a quarterback who has 2 years of experience coming into the season.

The ability of the quarterback is crucial to the success of the team. Assuming, Turner translates his experience into big numbers, this team is set up to have a very successful season. The offensive line, and the defense will come together, they usually do.....what has always been the question mark is the ability of the quarterback.

If Turner is healthy, and develops as he should....this season is ripe for success. And with a little luck and if they can avoid major injuries, the Terps are going to surprise all the doubters and win a lot of games.

Let's face it, the Fridge has done great with a very good overall record.

And he has done it in a sport where Maryland had a decided disadvantage given that football does not offer a deep recruiting well on a local basis and has always been a step below basketball and even lacrosse in the hearts and minds of most Terps.

That is a reason to really embrace the football coach.

But our basketball coach does NOT deserve the same treatment. He has receded in his perfromance and so has the program. A national championship and then also rans (walks). Talent/recruiting now compares with football.

No excuse. It's on Gary.

Bring on the Koolaid.....
