Friedgen on Turner's Growth

Maryland Coach Ralph Friedgen has said several times throughout camp that it is very important for quarterback Chris Turner to play well this season. That is true for any starting quarterback on a college team, but it is particularly true for Turner because the rest of the team is so young and the offensive line looms as a significant question mark.

But Friedgen and offensive coordinator James Franklin have been impressed with Turner throughout camp. I have a story on Turner running this weekend, so I won’t go into too much length here.

“You can see how mature he is right now,” Friedgen said. “He doesn’t get frustrated. He keeps his cool. I see him encouraging guys more. I see him giving little tips. I never saw that before. [Center] Phil Costa is more of a vocal guy. But Chris will give his opinion, too. He is pretty even-keeled. He is not going to fluctuate. He is doing a very good job as a leader. The game has slowed down for him. If he plays well, we have a chance.”
