Friedgen: Tate Has Been 'Sensational'

I want to thank everyone for the e-mails today. I promise to return every one by the end of the night. But this will need to be my final blog post of the day because I have several stories to write the next few days. Just left Coach Ralph Friedgen’s office. Friedgen started his meeting with reporters by pinpointing the handful of players who have stood out so far in camp.

--Quarterback Chris Turner: Friedgen said he is seeing the defense very well, and that he is using his cadence well. Friedgen has praised Turner throughout camp.

--Safety Kenny Tate: Friedgen said Tate has had a “sensational” camp. He does not use that word often. But Friedgen has mentioned Tate in almost every session with reporters, and it has seemed like Tate has intercepted a pass almost every day. “He is all over the field,” Friedgen said. “He’s blitzing, covering, just making plays.”

--Wide receiver Adrian Cannon: Friedgen said Cannon is “far and above all receivers right now.” This is the first indication that one wide receiver has separated himself from the pack of 10.

And that’s it.

Friedgen said the offensive line is gradually getting better. … Several players missed practice Wednesday morning because of classes. … When Maryland plays its second scrimmage Saturday, Friedgen wants the offense to face some of Don Brown’s defense, plus some of the types of defenses that Maryland could face this season. …Right tackle Tyler Bowen missed practice because he was banged up, which left Paul Pinegar and R.J. Dill battling it out at the up-for-grabs position. … Maryland practiced until about 9 p.m. Tuesday night.

Carolina1 is only a screen name and as far as changing my opinion about what games we will win and what games we will lose this is the right of everyone on this board.

For the record, I am a terp grad 75, member of the terp club since 1980..Coaches Club level...Will sit in the mez section this up to most of the games and fly up for bb games when they are on a weekend.

Recruit new members to the terp club in this area( the program is called Terp club Agent...So these are facts that can be verified by the owner of this board..

On a serios matter those of you who choose to use the Word "Retard" I suggest that you cease using this word due to the fact you are violating the law as it relates to words associated with Hate Crimes and discrimination.
Express your opinions...and i will do the same.. Choose your words carefully ...

Carolina1 thanks for being a loyal Terp!

Any word on if Tate will secure a starting job based on the camp he's had. Originally I had read he would be backing up. If he starts will be at Strong or Free safety and who would be replace. I know our safeties are upperclassmen so Tate being a sophomore would need to unseat one of them.

Skinner and Perez are the starters right now?

Loving the Kenny Tate news. People (outside of Terp fans) forget what a massive recruit he was. Of course, the regional/national media have no clue about the Terps, outside of a rare Turner/Scott/Wujciak mention.

Hopefully Kenny will wake some people up - and light some WR's up in the process.

Thanks Ny-terp...Tate played every game last year and he is getting better with every play.with Skinner(who will knock the poo out of ya),perez,McCough,Carroll and kenny we will have a "to be feared" secondary.I cannot wait to see what the new dc plans to do with them.I do think we will see a lot of cornor and safety blitz schemes..

Being a local guy it sure will help with our recruiting of talent.

Well we are only 17 days away...Just got my seats and parking in the mail...will be leaving for the cal game on the 2nd so i sure hope when i am returning we have a win in our pocket. The game still scares the poo out of me but if we can contain best the way we did last year we could be in for a pleasant surprise...

Posted by: carolina1 | August 19, 2009 3:42 PM | Report abuse

love the local products...even though he did go to dematha...GC '88...

i like to see him do what barnes did last year to javid best!!! i flew back from seattle for that game...that hit alone was worth it...

wonder where he'd be if he were battling with the other 10 for wide receiver...

Posted by: deadskin | August 19, 2009 3:43 PM | Report abuse

HEY DEADSKIN..Based on your screen name it sounds like you have given up on the skins..I still have my season tickets(have had them from 1977) but Synder has ruined that team where is jack kent cooke...

To the terps...Yes being a local guy St Johns 71... I hope pete white does as well as kenny... AND yes it would be nice to see kenny hit best early in the game to set the tone...I feel last years hit really helped us.Best is a great back and if we can shake him up early we could force them to throw into the heart of our defense

Kenny Tate will be our Ed Reed. The dude is playmaker.

So happy about the new defensive coordinator.

Chris Cosh would f'up the Ravens defense or the 86 Bears defense. What took so long for him to be canned?

Only a figurative RETARD would claim that using a particular word is against the law. What a bumbling, stumbling, sheer and utter moron you are Carolina1. NO ONE ON HERE BELIEVES YOU ARE A MD FAN, LET ALONE A BOOSTER.

Posted by: VivaFridge | August 19, 2009 6:12 PM | Report abuse

Just looked at some older posts and thought I'd list the man examples of the sheer stupidity of Carolina1:

A) He comes on here claiming he's some big MD booster, yet bashes our coach, bashes all our players and gives them all grades of D- and F-s, trashes our fans, and got booted off of here by the WaPost moderator and had all of his comments deleted.

B) He then came back on here and couldn't help himself and exposed that he is not a MD fan by explaining why he chose the name Carolina, "because it has a zing" to it because UNC won a NCAA title. Whoops, guess you're not a real MD booster after all!

C) He spells the name Ralph with an F! hahahah!

D) He claimed our best player was someone named "Del-Ray" and said he is prone to injury and attitude. Perhaps he was referring to RB Da'Rel Scott?? HAHAHA! And Scott is not at all known for attitude problems, and if he was so injury prone how did he become FIRST TEAM ALL ACC IN HIS FIRST AND ONLY YEAR AS A STARTER YOU RETARD?? HAHAHAHAH!!!

E) he claimed anyone who sits in the 300 level at Byrd stadium is "low life." That speaks for itself.

F) he mocked our few student commenters as broke and not having jobs. Again, tells you how stupid this guy is.

G) he claimed the economy has nothing to do with the suites at Byrd not being sold out yet. Yea, riiiiiight. Sure thing buddy.

H) And this is the funniest example of all--he actually thought the point spread for the MD Cal game would drop 10 points between now and kickoff! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

Carolina, you are the laughing stock of this board. No one on here takes you the slightest bit seriously. It's about time you realized this and trolled some other blog you RETARD.

Posted by: VivaFridge | August 19, 2009 6:33 PM | Report abuse

Oh yeah, I forgot a few more.

I) Carolina said MD would beat Cal. Then a few posts later said we would suck this year and would get crushed by Cal.

J) Carolina said the spread for the Cal game was down to 15 already and challenged Barno to a bet about it. Either he was lying about it or he was really that stupid and actually didn't know how to read a point spread (chances are he really was that stupid)

he's probably some Duke student living in his mom's basement, get a life you idiot

Wow...just wow. Good work VivaFridge. I think it's time to ignore the resident retard.

He's in his own little delusional world if he thinks anyone is buying his crap about being a Terp Club Recruiter.

According to ESPN Javid Best missed spring practice and has yet to practice this August because of a foot problem that prevents him from cutting back. They were not sure if he will ready for the opening game and if he is he may be limited in his running.

I am a recent Maryland grad...and I do love my terrapins...I know for a fact this team will sneak up on people this year. People always point to our lines as weakness...well if people would remember, our oline underachieved last year. The only people remaining are the standout olinemen. They certainly will not be worse then last year and they have the potential to be better by the end of the year.

Our d-line worries me a tad bit, but again, it's not our dline was full of studs last year. I think we will have one of those defenses that gets yards put on them but also creates an insane amount of turnovers (i.e. the Cincinnati Bengals defense THE YEAR THEY WENT TO THE PLAYOFFS). Don Brown will shore them up.

if you continue to use the Phrase "retard" which is a form of hate towards Mentally challenged folks then you will be kicked off the board.

Check the law on the illegal use of this word.

Posted by: carolina1 | August 19, 2009 2:15 PM

This coming from the same guy who got booted off this board for repeatedly using the term terpf*g about one of the student posters on here. What a phony sack of sh*t you are Carolina1. It's hilarious that you got booted off here for foul language and are now lecturing others about a word that is not nearly as offensive. And it's even more hilarious that you just outed yourself as a Duke graduate.

You really are a loser dude

Posted by: VivaFridge | August 19, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

although it's not a hate crime to use the word retard, it's certainly not a word that brings joy to the special needs community. It's a slur, and when you call someone a retard it demeans a population of people based on how they were born. They get what you are doing, and they understand that you are mocking them.
No one is trying to take away your right to use the word retard. I just wonder why you would knowing the pain you cause.

Redskins Defensive Coordinator uses the word "retarded" today and it sparked a lot of conversation about its usage over on the Redskins Insider. Personally, I don't any problem with using the word. If you ban that word, then people will just start using "mentally disabled" as an insult, and then we'll have to make that forbidden too. Political Correctness is a big problem in our society...I'm all for fighting against it.

Posted by: brianxp | August 20, 2009 11:34 AM | Report abuse

I don't think you're retarded. I'm a special education teacher and I don't like it when people use it in a hateful manner.

By the same token, though, I think if you are a true football fan, you stick with your picks. I even think that I heard sports radio hosts call them "locks." Changng your pick from having Md win to having Cal winning shows you to be like a fair-weather fan that goes with the tide. Be a man and stand by your picks.

Terps start 8-0! That's my story and I'm stickin' with it.
