Friedgen: Vellano Out Until October
The news from last night’s media session with Coach Ralph Friedgen was this: Redshirt freshman defensive lineman Joe Vellano has a stress fracture in his foot and underwent surgery Thursday. Friedgen expects Vellano back in time for the Oct. 3 game against Clemson.
Maryland conducted what amounted to a mock scrimmage at Byrd Stadium on Thursday. The team will hold its second true scrimmage Saturday at Byrd Stadium, and it should be quite interesting because the offense struggled mightily in the first scrimmage.
As for Thursday’s highlights, wide receivers LaQuan Williams and Kevin Dorsey each caught 29-yard touchdown receptions from quarterback Jamarr Robinson.
Running back Da’Rel Scott threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Chris Turner (yes, you read that correctly). And Robinson threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Emani Lee-Odai.
Mike Barbour kicked a 45-yard field goal, and he looks like he might be closing in on securing the starting job at place kicker.
