More From Kenny Tate

I did a story on Kenny Tate for the newspaper today. Here are some quotes from my interview with Tate the other day. He is a pretty soft-spoken, confident guy, but I would not say cocky. This guy knows he is good, and he is very good. I’m looking forward to seeing what type of impact he can make defensively. And the coaches are particularly excited about his potential.

(On how Tate has been playing)
I have been doing well, but there are always things I need to work on, especially in coverage. There are things I don’t do right all the time. Rushing the passer and playing coverage at same time, it just came to me naturally.

(Did you consider moving back to wide receiver this year?)
To be honest, I did think about it. We have a lot of talent on offense. I felt like, everybody I was talking to, they said it was my decision but I felt I could make a bigger impact on defense. I still like the ball in my hands. I think I can do something with that, too. But defense is working out right now.

(Did the fact that there are so many receivers already play a role in your decision?)
Nope. I knew I could come out every day and do what I had to do. I felt I was always going to do my best. Defense is a better fit for me. I have only played receiver three years. Only in high school. Never played it ever before that. Safety I played my whole life.

(How difficult will it be for opponents to prepare for his defense?)
Very difficult. It has taken our offense all spring, summer and camp to pick up all the stuff. And there’s always more to come. Nobody does [have tape of it]. That’s one of the beauty of it.

(How would you explain the defense to fans who have not seen it?)
It’s just different. Even to the defense now, some of the schemes make sense just because we’re on defense, but when we started looking at it, it doesn’t seem like it is supposed to work that well, but it does.

It’s a lot of fun. It’s just a fast-paced defense. Coach Don [Brown] says we have the freedom, as long as we take care of our responsibilities, we can pretty much freelance.

I can't wait for the season to start...if for no other reason than the cash cow that is a +22 pt spread.

I still can't believe the spread on this game. Hope Tate delivers - a 6'4" safety that can play will draw plenty of interest from the NFL.
