Solidifying the Offensive Line
As the season opener nears, there remains no bigger question than the offensive line. Maryland Coach Ralph Friedgen said Wednesday: “I see it getting better, but I don’t know where we are at. I won’t know that until we play against some conventional defenses.”
Phil Costa is the starting center. Bruce Campbell is at left tackle. Paul Pinegar has the inside track at right tackle. Andrew Gonnella is going to be one starter at guard, Friedgen said. The other guard spot is still open. Justin Lewis? Lamar Young? Maurice Hampton? Bennett Fulper?
“All of them are going to play,” Friedgen said. “We’re going to have to solidify it. If we can solidify the line and have the same five working together, we can get better faster. We have not settled on who those five guys are yet, so we’re kind of rotating around. Playing the offensive line is like having a good dance partner. You have to work together.”
