Guards a Concern on the Offensive Line
Ralph Friedgen said center Phil Costa is playing very well right now and has demonstrated tremendous leadership to help the young guys on the offensive line. Friedgen also knows what Bruce Campbell can do at left tackle. There’s the three-way battle at right tackle, where Paul Pinegar, Tyler Bowen and R.J. Dill are battling it out in a fierce competition.
That leaves the two guard slots, and that’s where Friedgen remains concerned. Sophomore Lamar Young had his best practice Wednesday. Young is battling Andrew Gonnella at left guard. Redshirt freshman Justin Lewis is competing for the starting job at right guard.
“Right now, I’m still concerned about guard position,” Friedgen said. “I have three guys at right tackle. Before the end of camp, we have to get our 10 best offensive linemen and get them in the right spots. I think we’ll be alright at tackle, it’s guard that’s a concern.”
