Vasquez, Venezuela Out At FIBA Americas
Despite solid play from Maryland senior guard Greivis Vasquez, the Venezuelan national team was eliminated from the FIBA Americas Championship in Puerto Rico over the weekend. Vasquez averaged 9.8 points, 5.5 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game in four contests.
The Venezuelans lost to Panama on Friday and to the Dominican Republic on Saturday, giving them a 1-3 record in pool play. Venezuela finished fifth out of five teams in Group B and, therefore, did not advance to the tournament's quarterfinal round.
On Friday, Venezuela dropped an 80-71 decision to Panama. Vasquez tied for the team-high in points with 17. In 37 minutes, he shot 6 for 12 from the field and 3 for 6 from three-point range. He also tallied five assists, two steals and three turnovers.
Venezuela mounted a late comeback attempt on Saturday against the Dominican Republic, but lost, 78-73. Vasquez compiled 11 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four turnovers in 33 minutes. He shot 5 for 14 (35.7 percent) from the field.
Vasquez finished the tournament with 22 assists and 11 turnovers. He shot 38.5 percent (15 for 39) from the field and 37.5 percent (6 for 16) from beyond the arc.
