A Chat With Travis Baltz's Dad
Colleague Steve Yanda caught up with Jim Baltz, the father of all-ACC punter Travis Baltz, who is expected to be out at least two weeks with a high left ankle sprain.
Jim Baltz was at Byrd Stadium during Saturday’s 34-13 loss to Rutgers. When Travis Baltz got a punt off deep in his own territory in the first quarter, Jim Baltz watched the ball sail downfield and never saw his son get hit after the kick by Rutgers linebacker Steve Beauharnais, who was penalized for roughing the kicker.
“When I saw the replay, oh, I was upset,” Jim Baltz said, “I saw him come off and he was limping, and I said, ‘Oh, no.’ And then when one of the university people came over to get one of us out of the stands, I thought, 'Oh, God, this cannot be good.' ”
Jim Baltz said his son has never had an injury before. He also said Sunday that his son went for treatment Sunday morning and was told it would be a few days before he got a specific estimate for how long he will be out. As for his son's well-being, his father said: “He’s okay, actually. He is doing all right. He wants to play, but he also understands, you know, it happened and there is nothing he can do about it. He has just got to rehab and that’s it.”
