A Dead Heat at Place Kicker
Maryland is just a day away from leaving for Berkeley, Calif., and there is no movement on the competitive place kicking battle in College Park. There is a chance Coach Ralph Friedgen could name a starter after practice tonight or after Thursday afternoon’s abbreviated practice, but I expect this to be a game-time decision for him.
He feels he has two good options now in Mike Barbour and Nick Ferrara.
“No one is missing one,” Friedgen said. “That’s a good sign. I am waiting for one of these guys to blink.”
Barbour won the job in the spring over Nick Wallace and seemed like he was close to wrapping up the starting job a few times in the summer. But he squandered a few of those opportunities. Ferrara has the stronger leg and stands as the favorite to attempt longer kicks.
