Friedgen Decides on Place Kicker, Keeps ID Secret
Yes, Maryland Coach Ralph Friedgen has made up his mind on his starting place kicker for Saturday’s season opener against 12th-ranked California.
But as of last night, he wasn’t ready to tell the handful of reporters in his office because he had not told the player or even the coaches at that point.
Both true freshman Nick Ferrara and redshirt freshman Mike Barbour have been going back and forth in recent weeks, each making big kicks. The battle has been extremely close.
Ferrara made a 53-yarder yesterday, so I may give him a slight edge, but that’s only speculation. Friedgen had already said that he would probably use Ferrara on long kicks because he has the stronger leg.
Chances are we will have an official game-time announcement, even though the decision has been made.
