Friedgen: They Will be Waiting for Us

Coaches usually say the results of a game from a previous season do not affect what will happen in the current season’s meeting. Maryland Coach Ralph Friedgen knows otherwise when it comes to Saturday’s season opener against 12th-ranked California.

“I am sure they will be waiting for us after last season,” Friedgen said. “We will get their best shot.”

Last season, California was fresh off a 66-3 victory over Washington State, and Maryland was fresh off a loss at Middle Tennessee. It did not seem like Maryland had much of a chance against the Golden Bears, until of course the Terrapins showed that they did. If the time difference played a role last season, if the Golden Bears relaxed early against the Terrapins, whatever, that will not be a factor Thursday night.

Friedgen called Cal an “exceptional” football team. With eight defensive starters back, a Heisman Trophy hopeful (Jahvid Best) at running back and revenge on their minds, matching up against Cal promises to be a daunting task.
