Maryland's Motivation: 21

Walk into the Gossett Team House and you’ll see three flat-panel video screens. Look at them for a few seconds and watch them proclaim that it’s Cal Week, etc., and then see the number 21 appear on the screens.

What’s that all about?

It represents how many points California is favored to win by Saturday night.

I asked Coach Ralph Friedgen about the reference on Thursday and he said his “motivational coaches” decided to do it. This team is clearly rankled at the lack of national respect and wants to do something about it. Can they? No one knows.

But they will have a long plane ride to California later today and a lot of time to think about this fact: The Vegas oddsmakers are hoping that just as many people think Cal can win by 21 as those who think it can't.

I was a bit surprised at the line myself when I first noticed it a couple weeks ago. I thought maybe a 14-point spread would be more reasonable. And, it should be noted, I rarely talk about or mention point spreads in this blog or in print, but because it was on the video screen I felt there was ample reason to broach the topic.

The coaching decisions by Friedgen and Telford will decide this game. It will definitely measure where the Terps are as a program this season, and if the pick of us finishing last in the ACC Atlantic is fact or fiction
