Franklin on Burning Running Back Redshirts

Maryland offensive coordinator James Franklin said that at least one true freshman running back, either D.J. Adams or Caleb Porzel, will play Saturday against Wake Forest. Maybe both.

It is not a tough decision to burn one or both redshirts because the Terrapins need three running backs. Da’Rel Scott is out with a broken forearm, and Morgan Green has made enough improvement to warrant playing time.

“Most of these [freshman] want to play,” Franklin said. “I asked D.J. and there was no hesitation. I asked Porzel and there was no hesitation. This is the season. We have been playing the preseason and this is the season now. Everyone understands we play in the ACC and they want to play in those games, those types of games. For either one, it was not an issue whatsoever. If it had been, then maybe it would have been more of a discussion. We’re going to do what we have to do to beat Wake Forest.”

Franklin said the 5-foot-10, 210-pound Adams offers the best combination of speed, size and power that Maryland has at running back. “A physical guy,” Franklin said. “He runs like he is mad at you. And he can run away from you.”

Franklin said the 5-9, 185-pound Porzel is fast and little, and described him like this: “He is 5-foot-nothing and one-hundred-and-nothing and runs a 4-nothing in the 40, so the hope is you put him behind a bunch of big suckers and he comes squirting out between their legs. Not everything has to be blocked exactly right and he still has a chance to make a play.”

With young guys at running back, Franklin said the challenge is to be as creative as possible while still being simplistic enough for the young guys to grasp everything.

Did you mean Morgan Green "hasn't" warranted playing time. Glad we signed him instead of Steve Slaton.

Hahaha! Fake Poopy is now pretending he's the real Poopy, I love it! Keep it up pal, you are awesome!

As I said yesterday, the other team I root for is Duke. They're just a real quality program and I fell in love with them in the early 90s. Coach K, Bobby Hurley, Christian Laettner, Steve Wojo, those were some of the best to ever play and I always have a hard time deciding who to root for when Duke plays MD.

Like the time I was tripping on some phenominal acid, I walked into Cole wearing MD colors but was rooting for Duke. Boy did that confuse the fans in the student section!

I rule!
