Is Maryland the ACC's Worst Team?

I just checked the odds on Saturday’s game. Duke is favored by six points.

Once a lowly afterthought, punching bag and punch line in the ACC, the Blue Devils have become competitive under Coach David Cutcliffe. Duke has two impressive performances so far in ACC play. The Blue Devils were competitive in a 34-26 loss against Virginia Tech on Oct. 3, and they won a 49-28 shootout at N.C. State on Oct. 10.

Having quarterback Thaddeus Lewis, one of 10 finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, helps, as well. Lewis ranks second in the ACC and 17th nationally with 266.8 passing yards per game. He has completed 134 of 213 passes for 1,601 yards. He has thrown 12 touchdown passes and just two interceptions.

Maryland needs to get used to being the underdog because it will be the underdog, most likely, in all five remaining games. The only one in slight question is the Nov. 7 game at North Carolina State because the Wolfpack is struggling mightily. N.C. State should not be favored in that game. But this Maryland teams should definitely not be favored in that game.

The Terrapins will struggle to win any more games this season. So many things have to go right just for this team to be competitive in games. Also consider that Maryland has won just one true road game – last season against Clemson – since the 2007 season. Three of the next four games are on the road.

Maybe the Redskins and the Terps should play to see who the worst ACC team is...

69 percent believe the Terps are the worst - how ironic a number - 69 - get it?

When was the last time Duke was favored??
This is the Game that the terp club brings all the Big donors down by Bus!! I would suggest that you bring your golf clubs so the weekend is not an entire disaster.

Welcome to Carolina (:

Terps win this week. And next week too.

3-1 here we come

Redskins will win handily today. Of course, it's just the chiefs..and that's what they'll be saying all week long after the win.

In the past Fridge has taken a lot of the blame when his teams haven't performed, even if it wasn't his fault. Well, now it is HIS (and more importantly Coach-in-waiting James Franklin's) fault that this team has lost.

What in the world was going on with the playcalling? They threw 3 incomplete passes and punted only to throw two more passes on the very next posession with the second who taken back for a pick 6 with a 3 point lead!!! Our running game for the most part was working. Porzel was a step away from a TD on an off tackle run, but Franklin continue to throw the ball in the pouring rain with a lead!!! Does no one give the staff a weather report before the game, or is it so warm, dry, and toasty in the Tyser Tower booth that Franklin truly believes his team is playing in perfect conditions.

Sure, there were some errors, but errors made by the players did not cause the loss. The first Turner INT (pick 6) was a tipped ball on a play that should never had been run in that situation. We run WAY too many empty backfield sets!!! The second INT was a ball that was a little behind that Jackson could not hang on to and dropped right into a Virginia player's hands.

The fumbles, no matter how annoying, were not costly, but it seems that this staff insists on punishing guys who fumble by sitting them down despite how well they are performing. Scott got benched in the Rutgers game after two fumbles, but was pretty much the only offense we had that day. The only way these kids are going to get better is to get back out there and try again. Douglas fumbled in the second quarter, and never stepped onto the field again.

Critical game management decisions are KILLING this team. We should have lost to Clemson because of stupid decisions, and against Virginia we paid the price for stupidity. 4th and 2 at the 28 down by four with 6 minutes to go, you DO NOT attempt a field goal with a freshman kicker on a sloppy field--PERIOD!!! The offense should have gone back out to at least try to get the first down to try to get into the end zone. The second missed field goal made sense because of the distance (4th and 8 I believe). The end of game decisions by this coaching staff have been TERRIBLE this season!!!

The worst part of this whole situation is that even if Maryland fans wanted to get rid of Fridge, the designated successor (Franklin) is one of the main reasons this team is not winning! It might actually be worth it to let Fridge play out his current contract, and play Franklin his $1 million, and find someone else to take over this team, because they BOTH need to go!

as pitiful as the Twerps are, N.C. State has a real case for being No.12

Posted by: Durham2 | October 19, 2009 3:08 PM | Report abuse

It depends on the week. You could say the same about FSU, Clemson, BC, Wake, NC State, Duke. It all depends on the week. That is how bad the ACC is.

We all know the Terps are the cream of the crop in the ACC and they'll be in the ACC Championship game later this year.

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | October 19, 2009 3:45 PM | Report abuse

Why are we asking if the Terps are the worst in the ACC? That's like asking what's the worst part about dog poop. Not matter how you look at it, it's still pretty much crap. The conference as a whole, with the exception of Ga Tech and Miami, has been dreary. They talk about getting 8 teams into bowl games. I guarantee you won't find 8 teams with less than 5 wins by season's end. Asking who's the worst is pointless.

Is it basketball season yet?

Maryland isn't just the worst team in the ACC, they're one of the worst in Div-I. I bet they're approaching ESPN's Bottom 10. As with the Redskins, you can hit the panic button now. Go Capitals!

It wasn't that long ago that POST writers were regarding the TERPS as a sure winner over U. Va., which was on a losing streak. Now the question is whether MARYLAND is the worst team in the ACC
Regarding the University of Virginia/Terrapin rivalry, the Maryland newspaper, The Diamondback, reported last week, "Friedgen is allegedly reminding his players about the differences between the schools."
The Diamondback also reported that "linebacker Alex Wujciak said. “Coach said they’re shirt and tie and khakis kind of guys. I guarantee you won’t see none of us wearing any of that stuff.”"
The Maryland Alumni that I know have an appreciation of grammar. They appear to be civilized, and are literate. But then I don't recall knowing any Maryland dropouts, or those playing for "The Fridge".
(In fact, when I think of Maryland graduates who played sports, I recall a lot of soccer players, swimmers, wrestlers, lacrosse players who are leaders in their communities; I remember that Tommy Mac, a Lefty recruit, was a Rhodes Scholar; and Esiason is literate enough to be a TV analyst.
But none were Fridge recruits.)
In one sense, Fridge is correct about there being a difference between the two schools. The University of Virginia has a high academic rating - according to Forbes and U.S. News & World Report, superior to Maryland..
And the WAHOOS beat the TERPS AGAIN, 20 to 9; which means that, as poorly as Virginia looked, they were better coached, and probably the better team.
According to the Sunday edition of the Baltimore SUN, Fridge stated, "I don't think these teams are any better than us."
DENIAL is a psychological condition, not a river in Egypt.
(Having written the above, I STILL feel in my heart that the TERPS will beat DUKE - Maryland can not be THAT weak)

Looks like Barney couldn't stay away from his self-imposed "blog timeout" for long could he?

Not that any of us expected him to actually honor his own words......

"I will be taking some time off from the blogs except to...occasionally respond to comments that are addressed to me."

Posted by: Barno1 | October 18, 2009 4:20 PM

Haaaaa. Why does Poopy_McPoop always lie about Barno1? What started this?

From Poopy's own quoting of Barno1, he said he'll "continue to respond to comments" addressed to him. And since Poopy_McPoop keeps addressing him, seems he keeps responding to it. So I guess Barno1 is keeping his word, yet Poopy_McPoop is trying to make it seem like he isn't.

Don't expect Poopy_McPoop to apologize to you Barno1, he's too much of an idiot. Just know that the fellow bloggers on here are with you and not with him, he's just a loser. While I don't know Barno1 like some of the others on here apparently do, I have read your contributions to the blog for the past year, year and half or so, and often enjoy your take on things. Whenever you're back to commenting on all Terps matters, I look forward to it.

Peace out. And F Poopy_McPoop.

But don't let facts like that cloud your own preconceived notions B-Dog232.

Just found this from an old Steinberg Chat:

Barno, Md.: What will the Campbell haters say when he makes the Pro Bowl this year? (notice I said "when" not "if")

A) I knew he had it in him

B) Big deal, it was just one season

C) He only made it because it was a weak year for QBs

D) I'd still rather have Cutler or Sanchez

Dan Steinberg: E) Brian Griese and Kordell Stewart were both Pro Bowl QBs.'re wrong about this.

Barno at his best:

More Barno'isms:

Snyder has turned around this franchise, along with Gibbs and Cerrato. And I like the team we have assembled. No, I take that back...I LOVE the team we have assembled, and I am grateful for an owner that cares so much about his team that he is willing to do whatever it takes to win.

I don't buy into the garbage propaganda about Snyder like the thousands of sheep in this town who will buy whatever the media is selling.

The Rooney Rule is illegal. It stands in direct violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibiting discrimination in the workplace. At some point, the NFL will get sued over it and the Rooney Rule will be challenged in court, and handily defeated. Mark my words.

No, my issue with Barno is the dripping sanctimony with which he confronts those who lack his passion and conviction. Rather than debate on the merits of an argument, he casts doubt about the loyalty of others, thus positioning his own loyalty as superior and, therefore, Barno, himself, as superior to the rest of us. The way he writes, it's not about him being right and you being wrong, it's all about him being better than you because his affection is so much more meaningful.

It's quite okay for Barno to be wrong about the Redskins. It's not okay for Barno to be a sanctimonious jerk.

Poopy, get a grip. You come off as an obsessed troll. How many hours a day do you spend trying to "get" Barno1? Scouring online chats and other blogs on this site for hours on end to see what comments from Barno1 you can find?

And the quotes you found above don't really do anything for me. He said the Rooney Rule is illegal. I just googled "rooney rule is illegal" and lots of links came up, so obviously Barno1 isn't the only one that feels that way. Big deal. He said Campbell would make the pro bowl. Again, big deal. He's in all likelihood not headed to the pro bowl, but that's not really his fault. It's the o-line and all those injuries. Campbell is still a pretty good QB just needs a better O line and some receivers. And as far as quoting someone named PDiddy as some kind of validation that others don't like Barno1? That's just sad and contradictory. You know there are dozens of people on here that absolutely despise you Poopy, and I don't see anyone quoting them in an effort to diminish you.

I guess my point is you need to get a grip Poopy. You're a joke to pretty much everyone on this blog, while most of us either appreciate Barno1's support of the Terps or are at least neutral to him. So you're not impressing anyone with your obsessive screeds against him, you're just ruining the comments section is all.

"The University of Virginia has a high academic rating - according to Forbes and U.S. News & World Report, superior to Maryland.."

Except that isn't true. Maryland kicks the crap out of Virginia in academic rankings in all the fields that actually matter (I don't really care that they have a better art history or philosophy program...). And U.S. News rated most of our graduate programs, even in most liberal arts fields, well above UVA as well.

Sorry, but the University of Virginia is not an Ivy League school, so I wish they'd give that a rest. You would have been right about being superior to Maryland 30 or even 20 years ago, but face it... Maryland has surpassed Virginia academically.
