Maryland picked 5th in preseason ACC men's basketball poll
Maryland was picked by members of the media to finish fifth in the ACC, according to the results of a poll taken Sunday during the conference's men's basketball media day in Greensboro, N.C. Senior guard Greivis Vasquez was selected to the preseason all-conference team and finished second in the voting for ACC preseason player of the year.
For the first time in the 41-year history of the preseason media voting process there was a tie atop the ACC preseason rankings. Duke and North Carolina each received 545 total votes. Duke received 25 first place votes, while North Carolina received 20. Georgia Tech (2) and Wake Forest (1) also received first place votes.
As for Vasquez, he tallied the highest number of votes (45) for the preseason all-conference team. Joining him were Clemson forward Trevor Booker (44), Duke forward Kyle Singler (43), Virginia Tech guard Malcolm Delaney (24) and North Carolina forward Ed Davis (21).
But when it came to the voting for ACC preseason player of the year, Singler (19) registered more votes than Vasquez (15). Booker finished third with eight votes.
Georgia Tech forward Derrick Favors was selected the ACC preseason rookie of the year. He tallied 40 votes. North Carolina forward John Henson finished second with eight votes.
Here are the complete preseason ACC rankings:
1) Duke (25) 545
1) North Carolina (20) 545
3) Clemson 409
4) Georgia Tech (2) 387
5) Maryland 378

A few things jump out at me:
Paul Hewitt went to the Final four only when he had an excellent backcourt that included Jarrett Jack. GT is getting a lot of hype with their future NBA front court, but without a backcourt and Hewitt's mediocre coaching, MD will finish ahead of GT, perhaps by a lot.
BC is way, way better than 9th. Look for a top 6 finish from them.
Clelmson and MD should be nipping the heels of Duke and NC all year long.
UVA will finish ahead of Miami, NC State and VT.
Should be a fun year

Look for the Terps to finish 3rd or 4th.

Malcolm Delaney as preseason All ACC?
Give me a break. VT is going to stink, 8th is to high for them.

Clempsuhn might have talent and a respectable coach - but I do not think they will finish ahead of the Terps.
