Terps ready to guard someone else

Maryland senior guard Greivis Vasquez looked down at the red sports watch on his left wrist in mock anticipation this afternoon at Comcast Center.

"I think everybody’s really excited to start playing," Vasquez said. "The young guys can’t even wait; they wish that we could play tonight."

The Terrapins will have to wait a little while longer before their home exhibition game against Indiana (Pa.) University, which kicks off Tuesday night at 8 p.m. It's been a little more than two weeks since the start of official practices, and, as Vasquez said, "It’s getting kind of boring playing against each other, you know?"

Maryland Coach Gary Williams echoed that sentiment. "I think players like the idea of not having to guard their teammate," he said. "That gets old. They know the plays. In other words, you run the offense against guys that just ran the offense. So it’s hard, but that’s where you have to be a good team. In other words, you have to be tough enough this time of year to want to do that every day, because you’ve got to get better and that’s all you can do."

Though IUP might not strike fear into many folks around College Park, the Division II team was chosen the preseason favorite to win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division and was ranked No. 6 in a preseason Division II poll issued by The Sporting News. Last season, the Crimson Hawks advanced to the second round of the Division II NCAA tournament. We'll have more on them tomorrow.

As for sophomore forward Steve Goins, who sat out Saturday's scrimmage with a lingering knee injury, Williams said team officials planned to speak this afternoon with the Chicago doctor who performed Goins's knee surgery in August. Goins also is supposed to see the team's orthopedic doctor, Craig Bennett, prior to resuming play. Goins will not practice today. "We're waiting to hear," Williams said.
