Williams: No update on Gregory
Maryland men's basketball coach Gary Williams just spoke with the media in advance of tomorrow night's regular season opener against Charleston Southern. When asked to provide an update on the status of junior forward Dino Gregory entering Friday night's game, Williams said he had no update. Gregory was suspended for last week's exhibition game because of a violation of team rules, according to a news release issued just prior to game time.
Gregory acknowledged this summer that his eligibility for the upcoming season was in question because of a charge of academic dishonesty. Maryland did not acknowledge the reason for Gregory's suspension last week, saying such information was protected under the Buckley Amendment, so it is not known whether the academic charge Gregory acknowledged this summer and his current suspension are related.
Williams also said Thursday that sophomore forward Steve Goins has not been able to practice in recent weeks due to a lingering knee injury. He is not expected to play tomorrow night.
