Vasquez named a Cousy Award finalist
Senior guard Greivis Vasquez was named one of 20 finalists for the Bob Cousy Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Tuesday afternoon. Named after former Boston Celtic player Bob Cousy, the award recognizes the top point guard in college basketball.
Vasquez is averaging a team-high 17.3 points, 6.2 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game for the Terrapins. He ranks third in the ACC in assists and sixth in scoring.
The number of finalists will be trimmed to 10 by Feb. 1 and to five by March 1, and the winner will be announced April 5 during Final Four weekend in Indianapolis.
Vasquez also originally was named to the Wooden Award watch list, but was not included among the 30 players named Tuesday to the Wooden Award's midseason nominees. The Wooden Award recognizes the nation's top college basketball player. Its winner will be announced April 9.
