Inside how the Maryland-Va. Tech game got delayed

The men's basketball game between Maryland and Virginia Tech has been delayed 2 1/2 hours because of a water main break caused after a catering truck ran into a fire hydrant near Cassell Coliseum. The contest now is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., according to Tom Gabbard, Virginia Tech associate athletic director for internal affairs.

Around 1 p.m., a catering truck toting beer to the 25th annual Hokies Celebration -- a fundraiser for alumni held in the Bowman Room on the fourth floor of the Jamerson Athletic Center, which is connected to Cassell Coliseum -- ran into a fire hydrant near the arena, which busted the water line into the building. School facilities workers attempted to find the shut-off valve to that line, but it was under water and could not be located.

School facilities workers then shut off the main water line to the arena in order to stop the water flow so that they could find the shut-off valve for the smaller line, bypass the smaller line and then turn the main line back on, which would have been a temporary fix to the problem. However, when workers shut off the main line, the back pressure blew another water line on campus. According to Gabbard, that problem required a four-hour fix.

At 2:10 p.m., a school facilities worker told Gabbard he could have the problem fixed in four hours, so Gabbard elected to set the new tip-off time at 6:30 p.m. The game originally was scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Fans will be kept out of the arena until 5 p.m., at which time Gabbard will know whether the facilities workers are on schedule to fix the problem by 6:30.

"Then we can make a decision then whether there's going to be a tip at 6:30 and we've got to figure out what we're going to do next," Gabbard said. "I feel confident that he thinks he can do it in quicker than four [hours], so we gave him four."

Maryland and Virginia Tech players were warming up on the court at 2:30 when an announcement was made over the loudspeakers at the arena that the game had been delayed. Adrian Bowie and Dino Gregory attempted a few half-court shots before following their teammates back into the visiting locker room.

Maryland's players were taken to the Virginia Tech football team lounge in the basement of Cassell Coliseum where there are pool tables, televisions and video game systems. Virginia Tech Coach Seth Greenberg headed for a treadmill workout after sending his players home.

Virginia Tech football coaches Bryan Stinespring and Curt Newsome stood on the court for a few minutes with what appeared to be a group of recruits. They have since left the floor.

How is TV coverage effected by the delay? Will this game be aired? If so, what channel?

haha, that's probably what happened, might as well be west virginia

So, no beer, no water and no game--sounds like a less than successful fundraiser.

Fox 5 better carry this game. With so much local interest it should be a no brainer...yet, still I'm doubtful that will happen.

So this 6:30 start time is just a maybe? What are the chances that they might not play at all tonight? Are they taking into consideration TV broadcast in their decisions or not?

No kidding H1. When the UVA game was postponed, we had to watch it on WTTG (channel 5) doesn't always make the wisest programming decisions when it has one to make.

I would guess channel 5 has no choice once it hits primetime national fox programming. They can put it on 20 though

Give WTTG a call. 202-244-5151.

Fredterp, I resent your theft of my USERNAME. And everyone knows you do not need a LICENSE to drive in the hillbilly sections of Virginia. My successful DAUGHTER who runs a Fortune 500 COMPANY once fired a driver for being 30 seconds late for a delivery. These Hokies are LOW rent.

"Btw, speaking of UNC. They are so insanely due right now, if I were a betting man I'd be all over them tonight against an FSU team that struggles on the road."

[Posted by: Barno1 | February 24, 2010 5:15 PM]

Barno, you were one game off. UNC over Wake (at Wake) 77-68.

Was Tiger Woods anywhere near the bear truck?

Posted by: orleandean1 | February 27, 2010 4:39 PM | Report abuse

That should be "beer" duh!!!

Posted by: orleandean1 | February 27, 2010 4:41 PM | Report abuse

If the Hokie's lose, Seth will say the beer truck was at fault? If they can't fix the water by 6:30 have the game without the fans or forfeit!

booger1 - WTTG does not answer its phone and the programming line has recorded information for what football games will be (were) broadcast on December 27.

I saw a crawler on Fox 5 during the NC State/Miami game saying that the Maryland/VT game will air locally in the DC area on My20 tonight, but they said 7pm, not 6:30pm.

Posted by: mikeinrockville | February 27, 2010 5:59 PM | Report abuse

I heard the game would be on my20 at 7:00pm as well. still waiting for a confirmation on that. they said go to for more info. but there wasn't anything there last i checked. so still waiting.
