Quick substitution does wonders for the Terrapins

Maryland senior guard Eric Hayes picked up his first foul just more than two minutes into Sunday's 21-point win over North Carolina and immediately was subbed out of the game. Coach Gary Williams said the Terrapins had been trying to press the Tar Heels, "which was my mistake. And then we were making a mistake getting to our coverage out of the press."

Williams pulled Hayes out of the game for a whopping 20 seconds, and in that time the coach said he told Hayes he needed to get to the sideline quicker once the Tar Heels had broken Maryland's press in order to prevent open looks.

Meantime, junior guard Adrian Bowie had checked into the game for Hayes, and he nearly tallied a steal. Though Bowie quickly was called back to the bench, both he and Hayes went on to record productive nights.

Bowie ended up logging 20 minutes Sunday against North Carolina. He finished with three points, three rebounds and four assists. Hayes registered 16 points, five assists and four rebounds in 32 minutes.

"You couldn’t hear in there, and it was tough to communicate out on the court, so that’s why I did it," Williams said of briefly subbing Hayes out of the game. "But Adrian went in and almost got a steal, and then Eric went in and played great, and then Adrian came back in and played great. So I’ll have to remember to do that again sometime."
