Why Terps-Cavs moved to Feb. 15 as opposed to another date

Mother nature and preset conference scheduling didn't leave Maryland and Virginia with too many options when it came to rescheduling Wednesday night's game, which was postponed because of the expected arrival of another severe snowstorm over the next few days.

In fact, according to an ACC official familiar with the discussions surrounding the makeup date, the two programs were left with only one realistic option: Monday, Feb. 15. And so that's when the game will be played (assuming the region isn't hammered with yet another round of snow).

"It made sense because it was the only date that we could come up with where both teams had an equal number of days off prior to the game, which would be one, and postgame, which would be one, before they play again on" Feb. 17, said Brian Morrison, ACC associate commissioner for media relations. "Both teams were going to be disadvantaged or advantaged equally by having one day off before the game and one day off after the game. That was the only date remaining before the tournament that we could come up with."

Maryland originally was scheduled to play at Duke on Saturday and then return to Tobacco Road on Feb. 17 to play at North Carolina State. Virginia was to play at Virginia Tech on Saturday and then host Florida State on Feb. 17.

Now, both teams will play three games in six days, as the Terrapins and Cavaliers will face off in College Park on Monday.

When asked whether Monday, March 8 -- the Monday before the start of the ACC tournament in Greensboro, N.C. -- was considered as a possibility, Morrison said it was not.

"We’ve got to have our seedings done and in place and practice times set and transportation and everything, because if you went until the Monday prior to the tournament, then you would have to wait until Tuesday morning or Monday night for teams to make travel arrangements in terms of seeding because we have four teams that have byes in the tournament," Morrison said. "And let’s say this game was being played for fourth and fifth place, you wouldn’t know who was playing who or which team would have to get up there on Wednesday or Thursday versus Friday. We will not play games on Monday in this regard. That wouldn’t happen."

Well, everyone who said "we want Duke" got their wish!

Two positives for the reschedule: (1) We'll be well rested for Duke and (2) Good practice for March because (hopefully) at some point in the post-season, you have to play a lot of games in a short time and we haven't had such a schedule since the early season tourney in Hawaii.

Well, whiners and criers, there's your explanation.

Let's hear why it isn't good enough for you.

They should have stuck with Wednesday. Why couldn't VA get in early today and stay on campus for a day? I just don't want to see the Terps lose their rythym due to a layoff and then be tired after 3 games in six days. As a Terp fan I dont mind letting the students in for free. I doubt this storm will be any worse than a few days ago?

Both VA and Maryland may be getting screwed?

sbf - Virginia was actually already here. They left this morning. I'm not sure what the status of the refs were. But if they could have been here, ACC policy would have made them play. But the ACC made an exception. For those who were at Saturday's game, you saw how dangerous is is already on campus. There's nowhere to walk but in the streets. Some sidewalks were cleared, only to abruptly stop, buried in snow. Add another foot to the existing snow, when there's nowhere else to put it, and it's a recipe for disaster.

Plus, Sunday's game had the advantage of being at 2 pm, when travelling to and from the game could be done in daylight. Wednesday's game wouldn't have that luxury.

It sucks for everyone. We all - both teams included - were looking forward to tomorrow night. But it's hard to argue against the safety element here. UM did an amazing job getting the campus ready for Sunday's game. I'm inclined to trust them if they say they can't have the place ready tomorrow night.

Thanks for the explaination. I never participated in an ACC Tournament with the newer 12-team league, so I could understand the more intricate scheduling needs. Back in the 90's we didn't get our travel arrangements for the ACC tourney until the Wednesday before. However, EVERY team knows it's going to be in Greensboro that weekend, so the rooms and travel are already booked by the DBA at the beginning of the season. As far as matchups and with 8 teams playing on Thursday not, I can see how playing a game on Monday that could potentially change the seedings would be detrimental to the entire league.

The Terps still got the shaft on this one because of having to go back and forth to the triangle, while UVA gets a 4-day bus trip. I'm sure Gary will make the most of this, and will have the guys practicing all week leading up to the trip to Cameron.

Looks like Poopy isn't going to accept Barno's truce offering. And so now we have to read 50 retarded Poopy comments about "whiners and criers" when we all know who he is referring to.

Pathetic. Get a life Poopy.

Guess it's probably for the best that this game wasn't rescheduled for Thursday. We'd have a tough time playing Duke on 2 days rest (1 1/2 days really) down in Cameron. Now at least we have some extra time to prepare for them. Hope our players can stay focused with all this going on.

We Want Duke. We Want Duke.

Posted by: Barno1 | February 9, 2010 5:06 PM | Report abuse

I agree that the extra time prep time for Duke might be beneficial, and at least UVA is equally screwed with the rescheduling. Maybe they can work JP into the game plan a bit more. Clearly, with the brutal schedule coming up becoming a bit more brutal in terms of timing, contributions from JP are going to be needed more than ever. I know the younger guys on the board look at Duke as the enemy and hope to see a huge win by our guys. Beat Duke, handily if possible.

Disappointed about our team remaining unranked.

Sorry noah but I haven't addressed a particular poster today. I've addressed a good handful of those who cried like babies over this decision before an explanation was given. If you included a certain poster in that group, that's on you.

Great! Now I can install that videocamera in barno's bedroom. Of course there is still the issue of installing the baby monitor so I can have sound to go along with the video.

But I'll deal with that another time.

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | February 10, 2010 12:13 AM | Report abuse

The game should have been played after the regular season on that Monday and the losing team still would have had time to figure out if they're playing on Thursday or Friday. Maryaldn ultimately got the shaft on this one because it's right smack in the middle of a road trip. At least we'll have more time to prepare for Duke on Saturday. I guess that's the only upside.

actually DMX, I have a little doll that I've dressed up in a Captain Chaos jersey that I sleep with every single night. It's so snuggly and soft.

Since there's no Terps game tonight I was thinking of renting a DVD. Any suggestions?

I was thinking something along the lines of Fatal Attraction, Silence of the Lambs, Cape Fear (the old one with my boy Peck), Misery, or Play Misty For Me.

Jesus Poopy shut the hell up about barno already! If you don't have something to say about the topic on this board than save it.

We're the refs here for this game? If so and Virginia's team was here too why didn't they just go ahead and play? So what if the crowd would have been smaller.

Was really looking forward to having something fun to watch during this snow storm, but thanks to Debbie Yow we have to wait another 3 days before our next game.

I've already addressed the topic of the thread mikegt. Of course, as we saw yesterday with your communist-style thought police ideas, I can see why you'd be frustrated.

Must make you feel like a big man to try to tell others (over the internet) what they can and cannot talk about.

Maybe I should make a small, plush, novelty doll that depicts you too....

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | February 10, 2010 2:05 PM | Report abuse

Also, mikegt you must have horrible reading comprehension skills if you're still asking questions about why the game was canceled, since it was, you know, actually explained in this actual blog entry.

I'm guessing you weren't one of the ones I shared English classes with since your reading comprehension skills are severely lacking.

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | February 10, 2010 2:08 PM | Report abuse

Ok Mr. Know-it-all English major Poopy, where exactly was it explained "why" this game was canceled on this tread? I see multiple explainations for why the Feb. 15 date was chosen, but I do not see anything explaining why they didn't just go ahead and play if the refs were here and the Cavs were here. I saw the MD press release, but that didn't say anything about the refs.

Posted by: mikegt67 | February 10, 2010 2:21 PM | Report abuse

So, what they should try to open up the campus and clear away to the Comcast Center just so you can watch a basketball game? They should have people come out, during a blizzard to plow just so you can watch Gary coach it up? I mean, major roadways in/around the DC Area are barely passable and you want them to plow and open roads to the basketball arena?

And Mr. Smart Guy how do you know the refs were even in town? What, you stalking ACC refs now? What, are they staying at the Fun Dome by EJ's Landing?

You know what, try watching the Caps tonight. They're just as exciting.

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | February 10, 2010 2:33 PM | Report abuse

That didn't even make sense. I said IF the refs were there. If! The acc rules say they play if the refs are there so why didn't they play IF the refs were there? These games are not about how many fans can come, that's why they have these rules for situations like these.

Being a know it all poopy, you said I have reading comprehension issues and said that was explained by Yanda on this thread. Well, I don't see it! So your response is to divert attention from that and say they should plow roads because of me. Huh?

You like to talk about how you take bong hits and do drugs all the time, well Poopy, are you high right now? It appears you are most of the time.

You've got issues dude.

Posted by: mikegt67 | February 10, 2010 2:58 PM | Report abuse

I'm ridiculously baked right now. Already had 420 bong hits, just today alone. I've also eaten 2 ounces of magic mushrooms, downed an 8ball of coke and drank a 12 pack of Natty Boh and 1 Olde English 40 oz.

I like how, you get called out for being a crybaby about the rescheduling of this game and you try to change to subject to drugs.

Just quit your bellyaching about how the Terp's "got screwed" because, as pointed out, this was pretty much the only way to solve the dilemma.

On a slow day, here's some nice quotes posted on the WaPo Cavaliers Journal:

Tony Bennett discusses Greivis Vasquez, Eric Hayes
Virginia and Maryland have similar profiles, with an all-around guard leading the team (Virginia's Sylven Landesberg to Maryland's Greivis Vasquez) and a combo guard in the back court who hits open three-pointers (Maryland's Eric Hayes to Virginia's Sammy Zeglinski, who are No. 1 and No. 2 in ACC three-point shooting, respectively.)

The difference between the two teams is that Maryland has more scorers, and a much better offense. The Terrapins' Landon Milbourne and Sean Mosley are both offensive threats, whereas the Cavaliers have Mike Scott and Mustapha Farrakhan -- neither of whom are consistently dependable.

On Monday, Virginia Coach Tony Bennett discussed Vasquez and Hayes. Doesn't it sound like Landesberg and Zeglinski?

On Vasquez: "He's so complete. ...He has the size and the ability to pass and shoot and score in a variety of ways. He can post you up, he make the plays. You got a multi-dimensional player that if you lay off in one area, he'll hurt you in other ways. And he certainly has the energy and the emotion to get his team going. You got to, with guys like that, make them earn everything and not give them the easy ones."

On Hayes: "What a beautiful shot he's got. Hardly any wasted motion, quick release. He's a senior. There's some veterans on the floor that have played in some big games, ACC games. He can stretch you. Good decision maker with his assist-to-turnover ratio, and obviously percentage wise from the three, from the free-throw line. He just understands the game, and his role, and he's a great complement to Vasquez. He's a threat, and you can see that against North Carolina, certainly."

We're the refs? We're? We are? So, like fans, students, etc are the refs for this game?

Or does that mean the players themselves are the refs and should call fouls when they see fit?

Maybe the lack of proper grammar is the reason for confusion here mikegt034324.

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | February 10, 2010 3:30 PM | Report abuse

Yes he (Poopy_) is funny. However grammer and spelling on a board like this are always suspect. Snowed in and thinking they definitely made the right call on cancelling the game.

If Poopy truly wanted to be cruel he would tell us about the weather on the left coast right now.

Oddly enough, I was trying to think of a UVA player (past or present) that I despise. can't come up with one. came up with a few from Duke - Gminski, Laettner, Hurley, JJR. C' me out. There has to be at least one Wahoo player worth despising. Actually liked Sampson, Polynice despite their alma maters.

So the Terrence Ross saga continues. He has now re-enrolled at Jefferson High in Portland, the school he attended his freshman and sophomore years. He must not be that worried about academics if he's going back to a public school and not a prep school. I wonder if he and Terrence Jones are planning on joining some program together.
