Maryland earns No. 4 seed in Midwest Region, to play Houston

The Maryland men's basketball team earned the No. 4 seed in the Midwest Region and will play Houston, the No. 13 seed, on Friday in Spokane, Wash. Should they win, the Terrapins will play the winner of No. 5 Michigan State and No. 12 New Mexico State on Sunday. The No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region is Kansas.

Houston finished 19-15 overall and 7-9 in Conference USA play. The Cougars would not have made the NCAA tournament had they not defeated UTEP in the Conference USA tournament title game. Houston is led by sixth-year Coach Tom Penders.

Maryland Coach Gary Williams faced Penders twice (1-1) when Penders was the coach at George Washington from 1998-2001. George Washington defeated Maryland, 74-69, on Dec. 5, 1999. Maryland defeated George Washington, 71-63, on Dec. 3, 2000. Both games were held at the MCI Center as part of the BB&T Classic.

Maryland defeated Texas, 82-68, in the second round of the NCAA tournament in 1995 when Penders was coaching the Longhorns. That game, as you might remember, Joe Smith went off for 31 points, 21 rebounds and seven blocks.

Much more to come later tonight.

Not a huge fan of our bracket but we must make due. A speedy point guard was our demise earlier on in the season. Let's see what our boys are made of. A possible matchup with Izzo never seems to elude use.

Wow. Duke got a gift wrapped bracket huh? American Express - don't pay off committee members without it.

Will take a while to digest this bracket and our region.

Maryland is waaaaaay overated! why does the media give more love to the terps than G'town.

You need to grow up Yanda and stop believing the bull@#$% people are feeding you about Maryland basketball and recruiting. Keep using scumbag sources who have no idea what they are talking about to write your "investigative" stories. Your article was crap.

Pretty happy that we ended up with a #4, which feels just about right. I was a little worried when ESPN had us at a 6 as of yesterday. Houston shouldn't present too many problems, though I can't say I look forward to playing the Spartans in round 2.

Because Skinslover79, no one cares about G-Town in this area. The day they made it to the Big East Finals, you couldn't even find the story on the front page of the Post's webpage.

Not dissing G-Town. Just stating reality.

Mixed feelings about the draw--happy to get a matchup in the first round with a team that wasn't even on the bubble 36 hours ago (Houston). They have a legit coach, but come on, they lost 15 games this year.

I think Mich State has been pretty overrated this year, but Izzo is a great coach and you know they will play physical D much like Ga Tech. Not a great team, but not a great matchup for us. Luckily, much like Ga Tech, they turn the ball over A TON. We should be favored to get to the Sweet 16.

Kansas is the best team in the country and playing them in St. Louis would be a challenge. Terps fans should be Northern Iowa fans on Sunday. Either Goergetown or Ohio State in the bottom half of the bracket would pose significant challenges.

I hate the Friday draw--at that point we will have played 1 game in 12 days. I hate being in Spokane, but at least there's no regional "home" team (like Gonzaga or Washington) there.

We should make the Sweet 16, beyond that, we need some luck...

Terp Fans, please stop worrying about Duke and focus on who you have to beat. Duke had nothing to do with you losing to GA Tech, the Terps lost that game because they came out flat and couldn't recover in the second half. GO DUKE

Can't complain about the draw or the seeding. The fact that we lost in the first round of ACCs and still got a 4 seed is pretty cool. I think we were closer to getting a 2 or 3 seed than people thought, had we done well in ACC tourney. Also validates that MD should have been ranked higher in recent polls, given that we were what, ranked 19th, AND lost in opening round of ACC tourney. A 4 seed is for the 13-16 best teams in the country.

Not bad Terp fans.

Game times will be announced tomorrow. Hoping we are a friday night game.

Viva Gary!

agreed about that article about moses abraham, and dont you look pretty stupid now that it has come out that maryland never even offered the kid. imagine that another players handler isnt happy with gary not playing ball and you could spin it into a story that made it seem like gary is too lazy to go to the recruits games. we have 5 good recruits signed for next year and jordan williams is going to prove to be the best freshman recruit in this years class because favors is going pro and jwill will probably be here for four years, get it together yanda or get a new beat
