Greivis Vasquez is ACC player of the year; Gary Williams is coach of the year

Maryland claimed two of the ACC’s top three annual individual honors Tuesday, as senior guard Greivis Vasquez was named ACC player of the year and Gary Williams was named ACC coach of the year.

This season, Williams and Vasquez helped lead the Terrapins (23-7, 13-3) to a share of their first regular season conference championship since 2002 and a No. 2 seed in the ACC tournament. Vasquez, who received 39 of 53 votes, is the first Maryland player to be awarded conference player of the year honors since Juan Dixon in 2002, which also was the last year in which Williams officially was recognized as the ACC’s top coach.

Vasquez returned to College Park for his senior season after withdrawing his name from the NBA draft last spring. After struggling the first few weeks of the season, Vasquez reverted to form and proceeded to win conference player of the week honors four times.

En route to becoming the first Maryland player to make the all-ACC first team since Steve Blake in 2003, Vasquez averaged 19.6 points, 6.3 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game. He is the only player in the nation averaging at least 18 points and six assists per contest.

Vasquez turned in a horde of stirring performances during ACC play and, consequently, etched his name indelibly into the conference and Maryland record books. The only ACC player ever to record at least 2,000 career points, 700 career assists and 600 career rebounds, Vasquez has ascended to third place on the all-time Maryland scoring list. With 2,122 career points, he remains 27 points behind Len Bias (2,149) for second place and 147 points behind Dixon (2,269) for the top spot.

One of five players in Maryland history to be honored as the ACC player of the year, Vasquez performed in a manner that has led many observers – Williams included – to place him among the greatest players ever to wear a Terrapins uniform.

"This means so much to me," Vasquez said in an ACC news release. "After four years of working so hard, to be the ACC Player of the Year is unbelievable. I don't have enough words to express how happy I am for my teammates, my coaches and my whole country. People in Venezuela have been so supportive and making me a better player and a better person."

Vasquez topped Duke's Jon Scheyer (12 votes) and Virginia Tech's Malcolm Delaney (two votes) to win the award.

In his 21st season coaching the Terrapins, Williams guided a squad that was picked to finish fifth in the conference in the preseason media poll to an undefeated home record in ACC play. The final victory at Comcast Center – a 79-72 win over then-No. 4 Duke on Wednesday – pulled Maryland into a first-place tie with the Blue Devils atop the conference standings. The two teams would end up sharing the ACC regular season title.

Williams received 42 of the 53 votes to win the award, beating out Duke's Mike Krzyzewski (eight votes), Virginia Tech's Seth Greenberg (two) and Florida State's Leonard Hamilton (one).

Maryland began the season ranked in the Associated Press top 25, but fell out by the end of November. The Terrapins returned to the AP poll March 1 and climbed to No. 19 on Monday.

Georgia Tech forward Derrick Favors won ACC freshman of the year honors over Maryland forward Jordan Williams. The third player in Maryland history to record at least 250 points and 250 rebounds in his freshman season, Jordan Williams was named Monday to the all-ACC rookie team.

Those days aren't coming back. Gary seems unwilling to even acknowledge the importance of recruiting. I'll be shocked if this years team makes the tourney which will be 4 out of 5 for those keeping count at home. In most programs that consider themselves major that would be grounds for moving in another direction.

they will lose Vasquez and find themselves struggling mightily again next yr to go 8-8 ACC. Only then might Gary realize that missing NCAA's in 5 of 6 years is unacceptable & hopefully he'll know no contract extension is coming nor deserved. Gary has said himself that recruiting is NOT part of his coaching responsiblity so obviously he's out of touch. We'll always be thankful for the NC Gary, but do the right thing & step down after next year's NIT.

This was a very poor season, with mediocre players, coached by an individual whose ego far exceeds his abilities; not to mention the boorishness of fans (and even some players), the continuing discord with University administration, the recruiting inadequacies, the horrendous academic performance/graduation rates, and the aggregate, seriously adverse impact Williams currently has on the University of Maryland's stature. He is the catalyst that is making Maryland a "laughing stock" among reputable universities.

This is great news and well deserved for both GV and GW. The even better news is that neither vote was remotely close. For all of our discussions of GV tying with Scheyerface or GW tying with K-Rat-ski, the voters acknowledged the special season that MD is having this year. Not sure that this is GW's best coaching job ever, but he has done a great job by anyone's standards. Coupled with the All-american nod from Sporting News, I doubt this is the last award GV is going to get before the end of the season. This team has exceeded expectations thus far.

Go Terps!

it's laughable to think that anyone who watches terps games thinks that this team is of the same caliber as the rest of the league. They don't have the pieces (players) to compete in the acc right now. they lost to morgan state at home, and i'f i'm not a fan i don't know why i watched the entire debacle. Congrats Gary and Greivis! I was at Gary's first game at Cole Field House 21 years ago when I was an undergrad at CP. After bearing witness to NCAA death penalty of the Maryland BBall program and the awful Bob Wade years it's been great having Gary at the helm. There will be nothing better than the Nat'l. Championship in 2002. Will Gary and Maryland win another? I don't know but I'll keep supporting the man and the team win or lose. Gary's welcome to stay as HC for as long as he wants.

Gary is a HOF coach because of what he accomplished up to the national championship. He has been mediocre, at best, since then. His recruiting has sucked and his teams have underachieved; he can blame the AD and the school and all of the other coaches who he accuses of bending the rules. But he really hasn't done much since 2002. I guess that is what you call sweet redemption.

So I used to complain about the shimmy (like four weeks ago). I look forward to it now. I probably said some critical things about GV when he called Cameron his house. I know I questioned some of his decision making - probably earlier this season. suffice to say, I was wrong about him and he has consistently proven that since the onset of ACC play (even the first Duke loss) this season. How lucky are we that he was rated low 1st round to high second round pick last year and returned?

I actually like his comments above as well as after the UVA and Duke games. No one can accuse GV of being a sore winner or loser. When he stated he loves the university, his coach and his teammates, he cemented his position as one of my favorites forever. He is a good guy and I truly hope to see him have a long successful career in the NBA. What I like most about him is that he does not give canned responses - he speaks from his heart and is buck-honest when the microphone is in his face. maybe he won't alwasy say the right things, but I prefer folks who wear their feelings on their sleeves to the ones who are more concerned about appearances. A lot of us were wrong about GV. Thankfully.

the players he now has are mediocre, not a single one of them is a true NBA player. Vasquez plays like he does in HS. He doesn't play smart consistently and when confronted by better or players who are just as quick throws up trash. Bowie is the same, they play the Montrose Christian way, mediocre decisions and hope they are bigger, faster or quicker than their opponents to win. I am sure Gary has told them what to do, but it is up to the player to carry it out under pressure. If Gary had a true point guard who has leadership abilities, the team would be respectable, but he doesn't.

All said, maybe it is time for Gary to retire

Yeah, its time for Gary Williams to move on. Whatever formula he used to lift the Terps out of the basement before isn't working now. Sometimes you just have to clean house and start fresh. Potential recruits need to see a new direction.

Of course, we thank him for winning the national championship. But if any of the other elite, championship-winning ACC schools suddenly dropped out of the NCAA tournament for several years in a row, there would be a coaching change--no question.

It's not nearly excused by Vasquez being a discredit to UMd, and a perfect example (along with Gilchrist) of why Gary Williams' recruiting ability began and ended with (the sainted) Juan Dixon.

Vasquez is too much of a self-absorbed punk to merit even the courtesy of homerism.

painfully, for the 4th year in a row, Greivis Vasquez is selfishly using UMD for an NBA tryout – according to the scouts, a league he has absolutely no chance to make.

As long as Greivis Vasquez is convinced that he is even 50% as good as he thinks, and remains the self-proclaimed leader of this “team”, they are going nowhere. Why is it that the pro scouts and most fans are the only ones who realize that Vasquez is a mediocre athlete and therefore little potential? It is truly unfathomable that a coach as great as GW has somehow been deceived by this kid for four years now. GW and several announcers always say that he is a good leader and brings a lot of energy! Since when does leadership equate to taking the most shots, making the most turnovers, and talking the most sh*# to the crowd/opposing players? And since when did GW’s teams ever lack energy?

Listen, if Vasquez wasn't the worst defender on the team, we would be willing to cut him some a lot of slack for all of the above. But for the 4th year in a row, Vasquez is not moving his feet on defense and is desperately reaching as opponents cut right by him into the lane.

Get ready for the 4th (but thankfully) final wasted season at the hands of Greivis “look at me” Vasquez.

Barno1 and restonhoops

you guys are on a tear with the Gary Williams smear campaign! What is it with you 2? Probably the same person with different screen names...at any rate...

What Gary has accomplished this year is pretty darn good for players no one thought would give Vasquez help this season and they did.

Gary Williams can't make players shoot, rebound or play defense. The PLAYER does that!

So if anyone doubts Gary Williams, you're flaming i d i o t s! There are coaches better than Gary Williams that have his same dilemma...look at Roy Williams.

His squad was supposed to be right up in the Top 3 of the ACC this year. What happened? Why aren't people asking for Roy's resignation?

Gary has done WAY better than Roy this season and people STILL COMPLAIN! This is a STFU moment to everyone who is a Gary Williams naysayer because it's sickening. The man is a proven general and gets his guys ready to play as he has proven time and time again.

Let's not talk about the NIT years. It was hard to watch because he didn't HAVE anyone worth playing! And don't get into politics because it looks like Barno1 and restonhoops are behind the drive of the series looking to oust Gary last season before he got us into the tourney.

I don't get people always bad mouthing Williams. If folks hate him that much, STOP PAYING ATTENTION TO ANYTHING MARYLAND!!!!

Route for Duke or North Carolina! twits...

Posted by: cbmuzik | March 9, 2010 2:17 PM | Report abuse

Yes, last year was a great, great, great year. We made the tournament and won ONE game. Oh, but no Sweet 16. But a year for the ages.

Now this year has been fun and we have beaten every team at the bottom of the league. Who have we lost to: Duke, WF, Clemson. We have beaten FSU twice, and they are the only wins we have against teams that have a chance to make the tournament.

And all of this has Garo and his Koolaid drinkers ready to take over the f*ing world, declare GV the player of the year nationally and the number 1 pick in the NBA draft. You guys just don't get it. And what's funny, you can't tolerate criticism from those of us who want mor ehtan mediocrity.

In Garo's Jamestown the koolaid is so sweet. But if you don't drink it, those that do will never let you be a fan and say what you think.... that is without attack after attack because you don't chant their chants.

Oh, Lord Gary, please save us and help us get to the dance...just to the dance... that's all we want. And even if we don't get there, or don't win a game, it doesn't matter... because we have you lord Gary!

ON THE ARREST OF JORDAN WILLIAMS

Not if but when will there be a changing of the guard, so to speak, at the head coaching position? With the tradition the Terps have, you can't seriously assemble a team without being able to attract top recruits to play the post. Time for a young up-and-comer to reinvigorate the program, while we express tremendous appreciation for all Gary did at one time in that regard. Buy out the contract. Otherwise it's ghost man at center, in more ways than one.

The wait for next year mantra is getting old. This game, this team, this coach needs to be examined and dismantled. Their leader although leads all the stats is a kin to who is the least ugly of all the ugly. Vasquez is bi polar and cannot be trusted with consistent behavior, Hayes is a pussy and disappears when the going gets tough. That is the product of horrible recruiting and the inability to attract talent in your own backyard. Gary's time is past. He is volatile, inconsistent, a terrible recruiter, and stubborn. I am sick of seeing my university being represented on national TV by a raging, screaming lunatic. Why would any kid worth their weight choose Md over 100 different universities? To be yelled and screamed at? To work in an offensive scheme that is old and outdated. To lose games by 40+ the same way D2 and D3 teams would. Not likely. Gary do us all a favor and resign.

I'm sorry to say this, but it is time for Gary to step down. The recruiting has been horrible lately. How can you not find any player bigger than 6'8' is beyond me.This team can't shoot, defend or rebound. By the way, maybe Vasquez will stop running his mouth until he shoots better than 4 for 12 on a regular basis. Why is Hayes still starting or even playing at all. He has not progressed one bit and lets give Mosley a chance. I'm done, this team stinks

Gary's a good coach. You just need players that will listen. See where Lance Stephenson ended up. Gus ended up in South Florida where he is just showing some ability (thanks to a good young coach. Jordan has been a big difference and our role players have stepped up. I'm very proud of this team.

I acknowledge and honor Gary Williams for what he has done to re-create the greatest that was Maryland Basketball after the tragedies and suspensions of the past. Gary Williams will go down as the greatest Maryland Basketball coach in my mind. "BUT" at what point do you allow someone who built a program to be allowed to destroy a program. Not in the sense that he is personally hurting the program but in the sense that he is allowing the program to become a "non entity" in Maryland sports. I am upset that Gary doesn't bow out in this time so that fans and alumni don't have to put him through this. Even Dean Smith decided his time had come.

Super job by GW and GV! Really looking forward to both tourney's this year and watching you both continue to work your magic!

cbmuzik -

Welcome to the board. Your criticism of Barno1 is misdirected. On this great day for MD basketball, Barno is pulling past posts from others slamming GW and GV. I have to admit, today it is funny as hell and he seems to be on a tear (how does he do it so fast?). Although some of the posts are relatively recent, the real venom was spewed last year regarding GW during the midst of the WaPo's series of articles about his (in their opinion, lack of) recruiting.

There is no bigger fan of GW's than Barno1. Stick around and you'll see responses from some of the original posters - some of whom are Terp fans and regulars on this board. To be fair, a lot of the recent slams on GW are by folks who I don't recognize from the board.

Gary Williams exhibits classic symptons of alcoholism. Deny...blame...deny...

He's a laissez-faire recruiter because it takes away time at Happy Hour. Why call a recruit's parent when you can drink a cold one? If he could get off the juice, I'd think you'd see a resurgence in the program.

Great, well researched article! You don’t see the effort put into deep background stories like this any more. I love all the FOGs (friends of Gary) howling like babies. Gary is a curmudgeon who shouldn't be representing the University of MD. He can't build relationships with players and their families and isn't interested in putting in the time necessary to do so. I loved when the Patriot league and Missouri Valley conferences Gary cried about how unfair that was and how MD would easily win those conferences. The next day he got about 10 calls from coaches looking to do home and aways with MD. Of course bully Gary didn't call any of them back. I'm a life long MD fan, but I've been to a few Mason games this year and they have a better program at this point. I can't wait for the day when Gary leaves and MD can start the process of being a relevant player on the national scene again. Someone brought up a great point which I couldn't agree more with, the FOGs always go and on how Gary saved us after we were on probation. It's a false premise. MD was going to be saved by any decent coach. We have everything it takes to be a consistent top 15 school:

* passionate fan base
* history
* great facility
* located in hotbed of high school talent

Gary is a joke. He needs to take his watch, let us name the floor after him and go drink beer and eat chicken wings with the co-eds in Ocean City and let someone else take over the program.

Congratulations to Gary and Greivis. Both awards were hard earned. This season has been quite a surprise, especially the way this team came out of Maui (when have the Terps ever played well in Maui) and after the loss to W&M.

Gary found a way to get this team to play better over the course of the season (Steve Francis season aside), something his teams ALWAYS do, and the Terps are now a real threat to make some noise in the post season.

Vasquez deserves every accolade he can get, and certainly deserves an appology from me. I'm sure Gary feels the same way from time to time, but he can be on of the most irritating players to watch when he's jacking up ill-advised shots, driving into doubleteams and charges, and trying to thread the needle with stupid unnecessary passes. However, it's clear that he has worked really hard throughout the season to improve every aspect of his game, and has polished himself into a legitimate First Team All-American and almost lock NBA lottery pick.

Is he the perfect player? No, but he might just be the perfect player for this team, and with him and Gary on the same page so often this year, the Terps have put together an unexpectedly superb season!

Way to go guys, and bring some hardware home from Greensboro!

POINT TAKEN, BARNO. People shouldn't associate reading a post about Maryland having the ACC Player and Coach of the Year with extreme annoyance, but you're making that happen. You are having the opposite effect of what you are intending. So stop, please.

Russtinator, great post. One thing tho...you can't overlook the loss of Obinna Ekezie in the "steve francis season". He got hurt and though Lonnie Baxter stepped in and played admirably, he simply was not yet the All ACC player that Ekezie had become his senior year. If Ekezie doesn't go down, that was a final four team and maybe more, in my opinion.

I like how what should be a postive, good feeling blog entry has been hijacked by Super-Fan #1 who wants to show just how "bad" some UMD fans are.

Keep up the good work Barno.

Oh, what was that. Terps football would never finish 2-10 under sub.-500 Fridge? What, all 'Skins fans are gonna see just how much of a genius Danny and Vinny are? Huh, oh, Jason Campbell is gonna be a pro bowler? I couldn't make it but could you tell all of us how was that 'Skins home playoff game this past year? Was it cold?

And I stand by everything Copy/Pastes dredged up, except for the low blows at Gary about his drinking issues. That was uncalled for.

I love the fickle fans argument too ged. Too bad I was born in MD and lived there for 25/26 years.

And yes CYork you're right. Barno is a sore winner. petecard already admitted his mistake and Barno (who'll I'm sure no doubt will defend his actions as "just joking around and having fun) continues to bring up what pete has already declared to be wrong.

"If Ekezie doesn't go down, that was a final four team and maybe more, in my opinion."

But we still had 7-foot Mike Mardesich, dopey LaRon Cephas, and square-peg-in-round-hole Brian Watkins to step in.

Actually, that team unerachieved because Francis didn't want to be the 2-guard. Terrell Stokes was probably the best true point guard Gary has ever recruited to play at Maryland, and if he was allowed to play the 1 by Stevie Franchise, the Terps would have had reached the Final Four. That St. John's game in Nashville was even more painful than the 1997 College of Charleston loss in Memphis. The 1998-99 roster might have actually been better without #23 (Terrence Morris' breakout season--15 and 7. Profit's senior season, Night Train's senior year, Stokes 3/1 assist to TO ratio, a solid and tall backup front line with Mardesech, Cephas, and Watkins, and Gary's first McDonald's All-American--Danny Miller).

As you can probably tell, I'm not a big Stevie fan since he lied right to my face about coming back for his senior year so he could whine about getting drafted by the Vancouver Grizlies. I felt similarly about Vasquez prior to the second half of this season, but where Stevie was the wrong player for the team that he played on, Greivis is a perfect fit for this year's team.

Posted by: Russtinator | March 9, 2010 3:23 PM | Report abuse

congrats to gary and Greivis..but the fact of the matter remains, gary williams since 2002, as done a pretty bad job recruiting, and that is what many at the post were articulating...there was no attack on the mans coaching ability, that is unquestioned. As a UMD grad and dc native it PAINS me to see recruit after recruit from DC/BMORE/PG/NOVA end up at schools like Villinova, UCONN, Syracuse, and PITT...if the terps lose out to Georgetown cool..if a kid wants to head south to NC or DUKE, fine..but not NOVA. I love gary, always have..his passion and fire are all great assets to the team ..but to think u dont have to put a full effort in recruit is insanity...even Dean Smith recruited HARD... i expect no less from gary. ....AND please, enough with the argument that gary goes after 4 year players therefore he doesn't want sleazy blue chippers...last time i checked he was in the hunt for Lance Stephenson, Mr 1 and done...yeah

Nice try jp, but even by barno's standards he is on a serious roll. Note that the Dookie and tar Heel are loving every post he digs up. Both actually root for MD as their second team and especially when we play the others' school (Tar Heel loves that we beat Duke, Dookie loves that we beat UNC last year). Note that Dookie would rather I refer to him as Blue Devil but I can't. Not sure that there are rules and standards on these blogs that we can inflict upon others nor would I ever try to censor anyone, but I think a general rule is that when a player or a coach wins a huge award, then his supporters in past arguments on the board get to re-post others' indictments of said individuals. And these awards are huge.

Besides, when was the last time we had 60+ comments to sift through? I thought the votes would be closer, but then again, I thought we would blow Duke out of the water last week.

"last time i checked he was in the hunt for Lance Stephenson, Mr 1 and done...yeah"

Lance would have only come here if Vasquez had left anyway (recruiting issues aside). After Maui, I would have said, Gary got the short end of that stick. Today, there's not a person on this planet that would honestly say they'd rather have Stephenson over Vasquez.

Stephenson will be lucky to be picked in the first round of the 2010 NBA draft. Tyreke Evans he is not.

Look up hypocrite in the dictionary Poopy, you'll see your face bro.

I also find it incredibly amusing that Poopy would want the re-posting of anti-Vasquez/anti-Gary comments to stop, seeing as Poopy was one of the main anti-Vasquez/Gary guys on these blogs not so long ago. As if you are some kind of objective observer here Poopy.

Hilarious

Posted by: Barno1 | March 9, 2010 3:30 PM | Report abuse

I've explained this ad nauseum on these blogs before, but I'll do it again since Poopy seems to never understand the simplest of things.

There is absolutely NO equating optimistic homer predictions that don't turn out to come true with vicious personal attacks on our Hall of Fame head coach and demands that he be booted from the university. Saying "oh barno you were wrong too, the Terps football team did end up 2-11 and you thought they wouldn't" isn't anywhere in the same ballpark as these anti-Gary comments. It's not even the same league.

How you don't seem to understand the difference Poopy is beyond me.

Posted by: Barno1 | March 9, 2010 3:35 PM | Report abuse

One of the main? Really, there's only a handful of my posts on here. And if you want I'd gladly explain my reasoning behind any/all of them.

Again, I get it barno. If you post insanely optimistic and unrealistic posts about a certain team that turn out to be wrong it's okay because you're just being a typical homer.

But if you post things like you see them at the time, in reality, (like my post about Vasquez taking his trash talking and not backing it up to the NBA, that was right because last year he ran his mouth and didn't back it up and he didn't lead the Terps to squat) that makes you some sort of fakey-fan.

And Barno, I've only pulled you full-length copy/paste antics 2-3 times, not 2-3 times a week like you to to assert your internet, fandom superiority over others.

Give GW a break, the man does not do the AAU thing so it takes him three or four years to develope a good team because he does not get the Durrants Griffins, and Evans of the world. He wins by developing college players instead of recruiting AAU players on their way to the NBA using that school as his one season highlight tape for NBA scouts. Cappilari does it the way you want GW to do it and he still has not won a national championship even with a top 3 NBA caliber college player each year the last 3 years but I bet you think he is a better coach. Imagine if GW had those players. Rose, Evans and now Wall.

Guess the members of BB, SE, La Norte that have done so and expect better from DCU are just bad fans that should go root for another team.

And watch out Hugh, in Barno's world, the fact that some of us are O's fans and are probably very frustrated with the current ownership must make us the worst O's fans ever.

If he misses the shot, it does not mean we lose the game, but since he made it (and the FTs on subsequent possessions), and we won, the awards are flowing. I will always look to that moment as a defining one for the program. Folks will talk about the technical ad nauseum, bit that weird, ugly, oh-sh*t shot is what put MD ahead.

Ain't it great that last year's UNC game was not an anomaly and is now part of the legend?

Actually, that team unerachieved because Francis didn't want to be the 2-guard. Terrell Stokes was probably the best true point guard Gary has ever recruited to play at Maryland

However, if barno wanted to be mature he would ask people (like the ones he copy/pasted above) why they thought that way, in an attempt to actually have an adult conversation, instead of just copy/pasting to make others look bad.

With that said, here are some of my predictions for the upcoming year of sports.....Again, it doesn't matter how off-base these are, how not-centered in reality they are, because if I'm being optomistic than it's okay:

Orioles go 162-0, sweep the ALDS, ALCS, and WS

Caps go undefeated from here on out, sweep all rounds in playoffs and sweep Stanley Cup

Wiz go undefeated from here on out, sneak into the playoffs since the East is weak, than sweep all rounds of the playoffs and win the NBA title.

DCU doesn't lose a game all year, wins their 1st round home/home playoff games, wins the East and wins the MLS Cup.

2010 'Skins go undefeated, host multiple playoff games they win, and go on to win the Super Bowl. Their coach wins coach-of-the-year, their quarterback beats out Manning, Brady, Brees, etc. and wins player-of-the-year, the 'skins have 25 pro bowlers and Dan Snyder is hailed as the second coming of Christ.

Now, no matter how off-base any of my predictions are, no matter how far removed they are from reality, they're all okay because I'm being optimistic super-fan.

Oh, and MD doesn't lose a game from here on out and wins the ACC and NCAA titles. (okay, those ones are that much off base)

FIRE (up the bandwagon for) GARY WILLIAMS!!!

Posted by: scrappledog | March 9, 2010 3:51 PM | Report abuse

Just want to add context I don't think most current or previously anti-Gary people grasp.

GW was 15 in 1960 when Ohio State won the NC. Then OSU was in the final game again in 61 and 62. So during his high school years, when people basically form their worldview about sports teams, Ohio State was at the very top.

The point of course is that to him, OSU was a top-level destination job that he EASILY could have continued rebuilding and stayed at for the reast of his career. Easily, easily, EASILY. It is totally impossible to overemphasize that! EASILY!

To clarify the definition of easily: With the tradition and basically limitless resources at Ohio State he probably would have had multiple NCs and been on a near-Woody Hayes level long ago. But he came back.

You have to laugh at how fired up the Gary haters are getting at Barno's quoting of their comments. Like they're basically saying hey don't quote me bc you're making me look like an idiot! Stop please, Mercy! Mercy!

Hahahaha. Barno, please keep it up. Most of us are on your side here. The only ones that aren't are the Gary haters themselves. And they are most defintely less of a fan than you and the rest of us.

ged0386 -

Are you serious? How long have you been reading this blog, a week? If you go back and do the research (which I'm sure barno can do for you), I've always been a staunch supporter of Gary Williams. I'll be the first to say that I'm surprised how far GV has come this year (like many others), but I have never bashed MD or Gary. In fact, last year when Yanda wrote the completely uncalled for series about GW, I was one of the first to say how ridiculous it was. As a student, I went to virtuallly every home game for four years from '99-'03, including the losses to Duke (the Jay Williams game was heart-wrenching) and the big wins over Duke including the last year at Cole. I was standing next to the aisle when Dunleavy walked down to the Duke bench and everyone started chanting A-hole. I was there when Boozer's mom got hit in the head with a water bottle. So don't make an assumption that I was one of the base, ignorant, disloyal fans who turned on Gary after a few subpar years (most of which can be explained due to circumstances beyond Gary's control). I simply think it's annoying as hell to have to sift through old posts to get to something worth reading. For those of us who have always read this blog, we know who the hypocrites are and who the true fans are. Be careful before you group ME into 'you people.' Just because I'm not posting crap from last year doesn't mean I'm any less of a fan than Barno. Get off his jock. It's not like Barno has never been wrong, as Poopy points out. There's no need to bring up a bunch of old crap to make one feel better about how great a fan they are. I do stand corrected in that last year Barno did think it was possible for GV to be player of the year this season. He was in the minority there, I'm sure. And according to Barno's repost, he said that he CAN be POY, not that he WILL. So if we're being technical, not even Barno predicted this.

I do love though, how Barno is spending his work day. I wonder if barno's boss minds paying Barno to sit in his office and play around on the computer posting comments from 1:41 pm (EST) to just about now 4 pm (EST). Good use of company resources.

"UNTIL...Steve Blake got here."

Except Steve Blake was not a great point guard when he came into Maryland. He BECAME Maryland's greatest point guard of all time, but I would contest that Stokes was the best point guard Gary ever recruited. Stokes was miles better in his freshman year, and if not for the Steve Francis season, Stokes may have dished out over 700 career assists.

Hey Poopy,

I actually bought into the pre-award griping that the NC-centric voters would never give POY to GV outright nor COY to GW. Still shocked that the voting was not close whatsoever. I keep looking for my posts about GW and GV and am wondering whether my negative comments towards GV (not sure that I've ever slammed GW) are being scrubbed from the posts. I know I've slammed the shimmy.

I think today is a day to let it go and celebrate. The Terps are back, battle-tested, with a bright near-future in both tourneys. GV is a star player like we've not had since the NC with a solid supporting cast around him. I still think the Terps are one big short of being downright scary good.

btw - we have perfect weather today - mild, sunny, crisp air, wear a light jacket at most but you could wear shorts sort of weather.

About my Os, Barno actually agreed with me on some of my negativity directed towards Angelos (the firing of Davey Johnson and letter written to Post & Sun). I really am upset that WaPo does not have an Os board.

Its a great day on the board when we can discuss whether Steve Blake or Terrell Stokes was the better recruit (coming in) at PG.

T. Stokes was immediately better than Blake, no doubt. Was a huge upgrade over Simpkins when we were desperate for a decent PG - and we got a great one. Came in assisting to a team with scorers who could finish. Took Blake a few games to get acclimated and he improved through the season. Stokes was more hyped as a recruit if I recall correctly and his teams scored a ton of points. However Blake set the record for assists as a Freshman (and as a Soph, Jr and Sr) so I think he gets the nod as both were pass-first PGs.

In terms of scoring PGs - GV all the way.

Whether it's their ego, stupidity, or stubbornness, I don't know. But Poopy, for all his complaints about me, simply doesn't have the ability in him to utter these 3 simple words: "I was wrong"

And funny how Poopy is now taking issue with my re-posting Petecard's comments after Pete admitted he was wrong. Well, it was perfectly okay in his mind when Poopy spent the better part of literally 48 hours on the Redskins Insider, posting every single comment I had ever written--many of which had nothing to do with the Redskins--in response to my post in which I admitted how wrong I was in all my prediction about the Redskins in 2009. I mean, if there's a better example of a hypocrite than Poopy, I'd like to see it.

Barno, c'mon no need to exaggerate. I spent a few hours (not 48) reposting your old crap. And I only did that 1 time there and 1 time here.

I don't pull your copy/paste once or twice a week like you do.

And Barno, over on Redskin Insider you only admitted you were wrong after you got called out. Before you got called out you mumbled some patheitc, woe-is-me, that you were taking some time off from RI because the 'Skins loss to the Chiefs really upset you, or some crap like that. It took someone calling you out for you to fess up, than you left again.

Well I was watching the Terps finish with a record of 20-13, 9-10 (that's actually UNDER .500) in the ACC, and leave the NCAA's after just 1 win.

Sure, I guess that's good for you and it didn't matter if Vasquez averaged 100 points and 20 rebounds per game. That record is what he helped "lead" the Terps too.

Sorry, I expect the teams best player to "lead" them to a record more like this years. Except I expect that every year.

Minhle1 and what part of me saying that I was wrong for calling Gary-The-God a boozebound do you not get?

Making fun of someone for a disease is low-class and I shouldn't have made jokes of Gary-The-God's situation, as it relates to alcohol.

Maryland sure proved a lot of detractors wrong. Congratulations Gary, Grevis and the whole Maryland squad. Great job.

But Poopy, for all his complaints about me, simply doesn't have the ability in him to utter these 3 simple words: "I was wrong"

Barno, is you ego (either in real life or just your internet ego) so pathetically fragile that you need to hear/read people admitting they were wrong just so you'll feel you've made a point?

Yikes!

Bullsh*t Poopy. Just another in your endless series of idiotic comments. See below, written a full day before your 48 hour tirade on Redskins Insider:

------------------------

I want to apologize to everyone on the WaPo blogs for my insanely optimistic predictions for the 2009 Redskins. I could not have been any more wrong. I will be taking some time off from the blogs...

Posted by: Barno1 | October 18, 2009 4:05 PM

Unlike you, no one had to "call me out" for me to admit I was wrong. I did so within 5 minutes of the end of the Chief-Skins game, which put the Skins at 2-4 and essentially ended their season. So please save your lies for someone else...

Posted by: Barno1 | March 9, 2010 5:25 PM | Report abuse

Woah! Poopy is getting straight up DESTROYED by Barno today. This is actually pretty entertaining.

I wholeheartedly agree that if you were one of the people calling for Gary's head, you should just admit you were wrong and move on. Why is that so hard?

To me it looks like Poopy just isn't big enough of a man to do that.

Posted by: terp-grad87 | March 9, 2010 5:28 PM | Report abuse

Again, yeah I was wrong in my posts from well over a year ago about the Terps record for this season and I was wrong for calling Gary-The-God a boozebound. As for the post about Jordan Williams and his "arrest" sure I (and others) shouldn't have jumped to conclusions but you still don't like hearing/reading about your players/recruits even being associated with a story about that.

I don't think I was wrong with the rest of my copy/pasted quotes, so that's as good as you're gonna get Barno.

Other than that, I stand by what I've said. Snap!

However, I WAS NOT wrong about this post:

With Vasquez back there's no stoping Gary-the-God and the Terps this year.

Poopy, I don't recall ever criticizing anyone for complaining about Greivis's shimmy. Perhaps if you had some comment from me calling for Gary to retire early or saying Greivis should go pro, you might make a relevant point about me being a hypocrite. But instead, you are reduced to grasping at straws.

Sad.

Hey Barno, when you were doing all your copy/pasting of "anti Vasquez" people today how come you left this quote off your list?

A gag order on Beavis Vasquez is long, long overdue. I love his play (when he is under control) but the crap he does after he makes a shot makes me embarrassed to be a MD fan.

I don't recall anyone else (me, petecard, restonhoops, etc.) ever saying that Vasquez, Gary-The-God, sub-.500 Fridge, or anyone else associated with UMD made them "embarassed to be a MD fan."

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | March 9, 2010 5:34 PM | Report abuse

Poopy,

Greivis carried that team on his back last season. Yes, you can gripe that Gary's recruiting was not up to snuff, however, you can't say Greivis was not good last year because the team did not go far.

We started an unathletic 6'6" kid at CENTER for chrisakes. Without Vasquez last year, it would have been Hayes and Bowie creating offense for Neal and Braxton Dupree. Without Vasquez last year, rather that a second round tourney exit, that team loses 20 games and I am sure of it.

Posted by: elowe2 | March 9, 2010 5:35 PM | Report abuse

I like how saying that Gary-The-God needs to step up recruiting and improve on his teams record and NCAA play or it's time to step aside is some sort of horrible (and inaccurate) comment.

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | March 9, 2010 5:35 PM | Report abuse

elowe that's fine. But what did Vasquez carry his team to last year? I've already posted the teams record. THAT'S what carried the team to.

And yeah, it is Gary-The-God's fault that Neal was his starting center and there was no low-post presence to help Vasquez. Yet to actually blame Gary for that, to some on here, makes you a horrible fan.

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | March 9, 2010 5:37 PM | Report abuse

Okay barno, explain this than:

You say:

I want to apologize to everyone on the WaPo blogs for my insanely optimistic predictions for the 2009 Redskins. I could not have been any more wrong. I will be taking some time off from the blogs...

Posted by: Barno1 | October 18, 2009 4:05 PM

Than you also say this to someone else:

Just don't disappear when we win several more than 6 games. You guys who post these excessively critical, excessively pessimistic comments always seem to disappear when you're proven wrong. Let's see how many of you are still posting on here come January.” Posted by: Barno1 | October 6, 2009 6:41 PM

So, Barno, you tell some fans to not "disappear" when they are proven incorrect, yet when YOU are proven incorrect you do just that, disappear, which you even admit to when you say "I will be taking some time off from the blogs."

Care to explain how that's not a double standard?

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | March 9, 2010 5:44 PM | Report abuse

Oh my god. Poopy, when I took a few days away from the blogs you came back with tons of comments attacking me for disappearing. Then when I came back, you came at me with comments attacking me for not staying away. You wanted it both ways.

This is what I've always said about you... Arguing with you is pointless because you don't mean half the things you say and you are mostly here just to antagonize people.

Anyways, My work here is done.

Go Terps.

Posted by: Barno1 | March 9, 2010 5:49 PM | Report abuse

Greivis's shimmies, mouthing off stuff to other teams (last year mostly) have indeed made me embarrassed. There's nothing wrong with Barno saying that. And I don't think that's the same as saying you want GV gone. Nor is it the same as saying Gary the boozehound should retire.

Poopy do you really not understand this, or are you just playing dumb for the hell of it? My opinion is that it's a little hard to believe a grown adult can't grasp this.

Posted by: terp-grad87 | March 9, 2010 5:55 PM | Report abuse

Barno stop exaggerating. All the posts proving you wrong on RI was done in one evening, not a few days.

C'mon you know it. You pulled a double standard, just admit it. No one wants to have it both ways, but you. Which is why you claim to "go away from the blogs" only to demand that others don't do just that when they're wrong.

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | March 9, 2010 5:56 PM | Report abuse

Grown adult? Poopy? Uhhhh no.

Poopy is the idiot who wanted Gary fired, wanted Greivis to go pro, and mouthed off to all the Terps fans who defended those guys. Then, a year later, Poopy is on here attacking barno for simply pointing out some of the many things people said about GV and GW in the last year.

Poopy is the worst.

Posted by: krtops9 | March 9, 2010 5:57 PM | Report abuse

So it's okay for some to call him an embarassment for trash talking, shimmying, etc. but when I or petecard or someone like that tries to call him out on it we're the bad fans.

Yeah, no double standards there either.

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | March 9, 2010 5:59 PM | Report abuse

Love how poopy is trying to deflect attention from his idiotic attacks on Gary/GV with attacks on the guy quoting him.

It's entertaining watching Poop scramble to find barno's old comments, none of which are contradictery to barno's main point about how wrong the Gary haters were.

Poopy why don't you just quit and admit you're a total retard so we can all move on?

Posted by: terp-grad87 | March 9, 2010 6:01 PM | Report abuse

Terp-grad, I've already admitted I was wrong about some posts and I still stand by others. Nothing more to say there.

And can you explain to the rest of us what's "wrong" about wanting the Terps to be better than they were last year, and expressing our displeasure with the Terps last year, all of which was done last year?

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | March 9, 2010 6:08 PM | Report abuse

I also love the childish name calling that goes on from the Gary-The-God supporters.

Retard, moron, idiot, etc. You guys are great. You stay classy, Terp Insider.

And the best part of this is, no matter how "frustrated" some of you get with the likes of myself or petecard or restonhoops, or anyone else is that there's NOTHING you can do about it other whine and cry behind your keyboard about us.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA.

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | March 9, 2010 6:10 PM | Report abuse

There's nothing wrong with wanting the Terps to be better. There is most certainly something wrong with calling for Gary Williams' ouster from the University.

Do you really not see the difference in this stuff, or are you just playing dumb?? I'm being totally serious right now. I can't tell if you are just trying to be funny/idiotic, or if you really are this stupid.

Posted by: terp-grad87 | March 9, 2010 6:10 PM | Report abuse

Again, What's wrong with suggesting that Gary may need to step aside (again this was all said last year, not this year) if Gary didn't improve his recruiting and the teams overall record and play, and their play in the NCAA's?

Sorry but no one should get a lifetime pass. Yes this season is awesome, but some fans want this season EVERY season. Yes Gary took UMD from the trash heap to an awesome program but since the NCAA championship in 2002 (almost 10 years ago) for the most part UMD has been an average program.

If Gary continues to have more seasons like this one than no one will call for him to ride off into the sunset. But if there are more seasons of 9-10 records in the ACC than it's fair to suggest it may be time for Gary to go. Sub-500 play in the ACC and trips to the NIT or 1 or 2 wins in the NCAA's shouldn't guarantee you a coaching job for life at UMD or anywhere.

who is worse barno for posting or you for caring soo much? Maybe you can go with him and get a two for one discount. LOL.

Posted by: ged0386 | March 9, 2010 6:18 PM | Report abuse

Look at sub-.500 Fridge. He did some real, real, real good work resurrecting the UMD football team but recently we've stunk or been average.

Does he also need to step it up or move on? I'll say yes. I don't want UMD football to be content with winning 6/7 games a year and be happy with it just because the Terps won 4/5 games before Fridge got here.

Does that make me (or others) a bad fan for expecting the football team to win 9/10 games a year and if the current coach can't continually do that than maybe it's time to move in another direction? I don't think that makes us bad fans. You may, and that's fine, that's your opinion, just as it's my opinion that UMD should be better than it's been.

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | March 9, 2010 6:19 PM | Report abuse

And look at Roy Williams down in Chapel Hill.

Do you not think that if next year, for some reason, the 'Heels play like they have this season that a part of the 'Heel fanbase will start grumbling about Roy Williams and put him on the hot seat? And he's won 2 NCAA titles for them in a very short time.

I'm somewhat conflicted about Greivis Vasquez. While am I huge fan of Gary Williams for what he's done for the UMD, and I attended Stu Vetter's basketball camp and therefore am predisposed to root for his students, I have a real tough time rooting for Greivis Vasquez.

Grievis's president, Hugo Chavez, hates our country and is destroying his. Normally I wouldn't associate a citizen of any country with his president, but Grievis is a fan of Chavez, and I have a tough time rooting for anyone who roots for the likes of him.

I thought this was funny. It's from the Hokies Journal on WaPo:

"But while Vasquez's selection doesn't come as a surprise, Delaney said he wouldn't have picked the Terrapins guard to receive the award. Delaney would have picked himself.

Asked on Monday who he would have voted for, Delaney answered directly: "Me."

"I just feel like from Day 1 of the season," Delaney continued, "the effort I put in and even since I've been hurt and being the team that was predict so low and what we did and everything with winning and on a personal level, what I’ve done in the ACC – I think I deserve it. At the end of the day, I wouldn’t beat myself up over it if I didn’t get it or anything. It’s just something I'm going to strive to next year."

This guy sure likes to use the word 'I' doesn't he?

Senjata -

Understand that GV has EXTENDED family in Caracas, all of whom would be in grave danger at the slightest hint of a slight towards Chavez. We Americans have the luxury of being proud of our country while vocally critical of our leaders.

Since you brought it up, here is the international media slant on Chavez, as opposed to the American slant. Chavez has no intention of destroying our country, he has stated that he will not be our puppet and has voiced concerns about our security policies in his regions - well founded at that. Chavez has said many things critical of Bush, but has softened towards Obama. Understand the intense pressure the Bush adminstration put his country through during its tenure.

The FARC controlled an area of neighboring Colombia larger than Switzerland and was waging a civil war that dates back to the 1980s. GWBush gave a ton of support to Presidet Uribe of Colombia who was elected on the platform of "I will knock the FARC out of Colombia by waging a serious war." He did, and Colombia surpassed Israel as the largest donee nation in terms of militay assistance. He knocked them into Venezuela. Kind of how the murders in DC from the 1980s and early 1990s migrated to PG. Remember, all Chavez is guilty of is words. He's never said he wants to take down America; he has said he will not be America's puppet. In terms of brutality, of course he is brutal - wouldn't you be if some commie backed drug-running well-armed and murderous rebels moved into your country and you were in charge? The fact remains that the US is buying Venezuelan oil. Chavez also supported the war in Afghanistan but was outwardly vocal against the war in Iraq. Its a lot more complex than "he is a bad guy and against us."

Blaming a citizen from the country for the actions of its leader or support for them is ridiculous. Should the Iraqi children who lost limbs from the 2-ton bombs dropped on their neighborhoods blame you for their disfigurements?

Its ok, you can root for GV and still be an American.

All,

Apologies for the diatribe on Andean politics. I have to say one thing. you may not guess it from looking at GV, but Venezuelan women are among the most beautiful in the world. They take the Miss Universe pageant waaay too seriously down there. I only wish that all of you have the misfortune of having a six-hour delay in the Caracas airport someday. Seriously it was as much fun as Byrd Beach on the first warm day of spring and it was a freaking airport. Second only to topless beach volleyball in brazil (it was beautiful from afar...). GV has his entire country rooting for him and most of the surrounding countries are paying attention as well.

Wow, I take an afternoon off to play golf and then watch Idol in the evening and look what I have missed!

Garo being Garo. One would have thought he was too busy accepting COY and running practice... but noooooooooo. Never to busy to play Top Cop (self-appointed) of a site he doesn't own!

Now, below is one post I would like to have back. It may leave out some context (no surprise with Garo) but my conclusion was wrong:

"Who's to blame?

I put Williams and Yow both at the top of the list.

She gets redemption by firing him...otherwise THEY BOTH SHOULD GO.

The overall sports program is important, but running a laughingstock basketball program is UNACCEPTABLE...."

"Yes, last year was a great, great, great year.

And even if we don't get there, or don't win a game, it doesn't matter... because we have you lord Gary!"

Garo's repost of my comment from 2/17 is classic. He ignores the main message of my post: That Koolaid drinkers like Garo just can't stand criticism and they are ready to declare victory before the key battles are waged.

It's sooooo boring.

It's also a little sick, because Garo ignores the many posts praising the team and the coach and hoping for wins.

I will say it again, but don't expect Garo to repost this:

This has been a wonderful season to be a Terp fan. We had a pretty difficult (rotten?) start but kept getting better and we are now certainly on a roll. COY, POY, a 4/5 seed in most projections. We beat all the tough teams in the ACC except WF ( and maybe we will get another shot). Co-champs for the ACC regular season.

It's all good.

After 6 years of gloom in the NCAA Tournament we have a chance this year to at least reach the Sweet 16 and maybe we can go deep.

Some of us have put aside our longer term goals for the program to be "Elite" again. It's not the time to be asking questions about next year and raising what-ifs. It's time to be Terp Fans.

That doesn't mean we are drinking the Koolaid.

Garo, my overall impression of your behavior on the blog yesterday is that it was disgraceful. But I don't expect that you will understand that.

Poopy you shouldn't be allowed to continue writing comments on here after the crap you said about Gary Williams. Forget about Vasquez, he's a 4 year player and he's earned our respect and all that, but he'll be gone in a few weeks while Gary has been here 20 plus years and done more for this school than you could ever dream of doing. YOU wanted him gone, and now look at how insane you were. He's ACC coach of the year!

If I were you Poopy, I would probably just kill myself.

I quickly read through all these comments. I think it caused my IQ to drop by 25%. Both Barno and Poopy are pathetic.
