Some thoughts from Vasquez on winning the Cousy Award

A few minutes ago I spoke on the phone with Maryland senior guard Greivis Vasquez, who was honored today as the winner of the Bob Cousy Award, given annually to the nation's top point guard. He was selected out of a finalists pool that also included Duke's Jon Scheyer, Ohio State's Evan Turner, Kansas's Sherron Collins, Villanova's Scottie Reynolds and Kentucky's John Wall.

Here's some of what Vasquez had to say:

On his initial reaction to learning he had won the award: "I was just so happy that I won the award. I was even more happy to see my family, my mom and dad, you know, crying because I won it. And they weren't crying because they were sad. They were crying because they couldn't believe it. It was something incredible for us and for our country. So I want to thank my family, my fans back home, my whole country and our fans over here. It's an unbelievable feeling. It's hard for me to describe after all these awards that I have been winning lately."

On where this award ranks among the other honors he has received this season: "It's just a blessing, man. If you were to ask me three years ago, I wouldn't see myself winning this award. But in a way, I would just because of my work ethic and how hard I work every day. I'm just so happy, and I'm thankful, and I still want to keep being a humble guy. And I still want to be hungry and keep working hard because I want to win so many more awards, but at the next level. I have to continue to work hard."

On what this award means to him: "It means a lot because you've got guys like John Wall, Evan Turner, Scottie Reynolds, Jon Scheyer, you know, some unbelievable guys. It's crazy, man. Like I said, I'm happy and thankful, and I just want to thank God, because any of us, any of those guys could have won it. Winning the award just motivates me to work even harder."

An Award well deserved.....some High School Jr's / Sr's should see this and think, at MD, you can achieve a lot....lord knows Gary can coach them up and the players can play and achieve!

Another award GV earned, great doubt coming back for his SR year will pay off in a short while (when he gets drafted)!
