Mote: Eaton will not be on search committee for permanent AD position
University of Maryland President C.D. Mote said in a telephone interview Monday afternoon that interim Athletic Director Randy Eaton will not be a member of the search committee for the permanent athletic director position. Mote said that while Eaton could emerge as a candidate, he was not appointed interim athletic director with the premeditated thought that he could be named to the post full-time.
"This is not an effort to either enhance or detract from his options there," said Mote, who will retire Aug. 31. "The search committee will look for whomever it wants, including all of our associate athletic directors, if they so choose."
When asked what role Eaton will have in the search for Maryland's next athletic director, Mote said: "I think none, actually. Not directly. He’s not going to be on the search committee."
Mote said he gave Eaton the interim tagged based on Eaton's body of work since he arrived at Maryland in 2003 and because he felt Maryland's athletic department "doesn’t have major problems that need to be addressed in any way."
"I think he has the confidence of people in athletics and around the campus and around the community, so he seemed like he’d be a logical choice," Mote said.
