Friedgen: O'Brien was 'never pressed, upset or concerned'

Here is a little more from Maryland Coach Ralph Friedgen from his Sunday teleconference:

After reviewing the tape of the FIU victory, Friedgen saw a couple mistakes from quarterback Danny O’Brien, but overall he thought the redshirt freshman played a “very good game,” read coverages well and threw the ball accurately. Friedgen has been hesitant to show his hand regarding how he will proceed with the QB situation – although it is difficult to envision O’Brien not on the field for a large portion of games – but the coach acknowledged that O’Brien “took a step forward” with the performance. “You never know how a guy will be when he gets in the game as a redshirt freshman,” Friedgen said. “He never was pressed, upset or concerned.” He also said that he has had confidence in O’Brien from the start. What had separated O’Brien and Jamarr Robinson had been experience, Friedgen said, and now O’Brien has that experience.

Now the defense … Friedgen did not like the tackling for the second straight game. He saw FIU able to throw underneath and convert on third and long. He saw players not wrapping up and not moving their legs enough. And he saw fatigue, some players played close to 100 plays.

Offensive lineman Andrew Gonnella, who was banged up in the first quarter and missed one series, is pretty sore and will be limited in practice all week. Friedgen expects him to play. Wide receiver Torrey Smith, who appeared to injure his ankle on his 68-yard touchdown reception, will be limited in practice, as well, but should be okay. Defensive back Desmond Kearse is day to day with an ankle and knee injury. Linebacker David Mackall suffered what Friedgen called a “slight concussion.”

A QB that can throw and hit his receivers will kill the Terps..Kenny Tate needs to sleep with a tackling dummy all week, he missed too many tackles.. Once we hit the meat of the ACC schedule, that will bring out the true flaws of this team.. That being said, let's stick with O'Brien, have him learn, and we'll have our QB for the next 3 1/2 years...But my guess is Franklin will screw that up..

Maybe you should coach.

I agree with frostanna...the fact that obrien is so much better than robinson makes me wonder what the heck the coaches were looking at all summer long when deciding who the QB should be....we are now almost 50% thru the season....Fridge does this every in a lame attempt to prove to everyone why he was right to choose robinson, he will slyly undermine/ trash to his underhanded compliments he bestows on obrien

Fridge SUX...before Fridge goes in and asks for a contract extension (and I am happy we won), look at why FIU did to us....they manhandled UMD in First Downs, Time of Possession, and Total Offense....just like Navy, a couple of fluke plays gave us the game

Ugh, TerpfanMA has quickly become the resident imbecile of the terps insider. I'm actually starting to miss Poopy and Carolina1.

"Friedgen will slyly undermine/ trash to his underhanded compliments he bestows on obrien"

You mean trash him and give him underhanded compliments like "Danny O'Brien played very, very well" and "I thought he did a really, really good job" and "I was really impressed with his poise"?

TerpsfanMA, not sure what you're deal is buddy, but you really know how to suck the fun out of sports. The Terps are 3-1, we have discovered a potential star at QB--as a freshman no less--and our head coach couldn't seem any happier about it. Yet you come on here spewing nonsensical conspiracy theories about Fridge wanting to undermine/trash the player whom he not only is, in reality, praising effusively--but also whom his future as head coach is now tied to.

You're delusional buddy...that much is obvious. Fridge obviously wants o'brien to succeed and if you seriously think he is trying to undermine the kid, I suggest you find something else to do with your time since you are clearly lost as a fan.

Barno1, I agree with your comments..Navy is a key game...if we get blown out we are in big trouble..A victory could lead to beating west va and being 5-0 going to death valley...

Barno1, i promise i will be nice this year..

Well that didn't take long now did it Carolina? A month ago you said if we beat navy we could be 5-0. Well, we beat navy, and morgan state, and FIU, and we lost by 14 on the road vs the best team in the Big East. Now you have Duke destroying the Terps?

Things that make you go hmmm...

I am a coaches level member living in carolina so i do put my money up for the athelics Do you??

Posted by: carolina1 | July 10, 2009 7:59 AM

Do you donate to the terp club(maryland sports) or are you just a big mouth, say nothing jerk?

Posted by: carolina1 | July 10, 2009 1:10 PM

Carolina1 is only a screen name and as far as changing my opinion about what games we will win and what games we will lose this is the right of everyone on this board.

For the record, I am a terp grad 75, member of the terp club since 1980..Coaches Club level...Will sit in the mez section this up to most of the games and fly up for bb games when they are on a weekend.

Recruit new members to the terp club in this area( the program is called Terp club Agent...)

Funny how Carolina1 at one point claimed was a "Terp Club Agent" who is supposed "recruit new members to the terp club" is now telling us we should:

:hit the management where it hurts!!!
no season ticket renewal, to suites no parking no conessions then maybe the new ad will wake up and see that the present situation sucks!!1"

All I have to say about that is:

Next year demote Fridge to the booth where he can't been seen calling plays and have Coach Franklin go on recruiting tripz...

What I don't get sometimes with Fridge is crap like the last few seconds of the first half:

We have them like 2nd and 25 backed up in their territory with roughly 32 seconds left after they had called a timeout. We stop them for a loss on a run play so its now 3rd and 30 something with 27 seconds left the clock runs until 12 seconds and we finally call timeout? So obviously we hold on 3rd and 30(although our D is no lock to stop anyone on third down these days) and call another timeout with 6 seconds left. We just had Logan bust a punt return for a touchdown and almost didnt give him a chance for a return there. Now Logan did get a return but did not do anything as time expitred but still what are Fridge and the coaches thinking there? I actually watched the replay at home and you see Fridge up close and Sollazzo in the background and they totally looked spaced out as time is just ticking away. Even the crap ESPN U announcers were wondering what is going on. This kind of stuff is really annoying and there is no excuse for egregious clock mismanagement at this level.

You have to give Obrien a lot of credit for stepping up as freshman. I think the Duke game will be a good one for him, one that could build his confidence and earn his first ACC victory. Duke won last year, so let's hope the defense shows up for this game. We shall see how good this team really is as the season drags on. We couldn't beat WVU, which isn't a very good football team.

O'Brien is clearly the QB of the future. However I don't get some of your neg nancy's complaining about us playing both him and Robinson. I doubt some of you have ever played any college sports. If you don't think it is difficult for an opponent to spend their practice time preparing for two very different QB styles then you must know nothing about game planning. This isn't about undermining anyone - it is about giving a team with a questionable offensive line a preparation advantage over the teams they are going to face all season.

geotherm21, great point. I don't mind using Robinson here or there, for a drive or two a game. I just want O'Brien starting (and finishing) games.

I love how so many Terps fan are negative just to be negative. In a game where it seems the Terps have found a QB for the future, all they can do is point out what's wrong with the team. We are 3-1 with Duke coming in this week. We beat FIU, who should've beaten Rutgers at home and Texas A & M on the road. Hardly a creampuff. We beat Navy, who many expect to get 10 wins this year. And we lose to WVU on the road, who is by far the best team in the Big East. But, I guess some people here have their agenda.
