Terps receive zero votes in AP preseason basketball poll

The Associated Press preseason men's basketball poll is out, and Maryland received zero votes. Not one. But it's important to keep things in perspective.

After all, the Terps weren't ranked in the previous four preseason polls. They went to the NCAA tournament in three of those seasons. The last two times Maryland was ranked in the preseason, in 2004-05 and 2005-06, they missed the NCAA tournament.

With that in mind, what do you think of of the Terps' omission by the voters?

The Terps have seven ranked opponents on their schedule: No. 1 Duke, No. 5 Pittsburgh, No. 6 Villanova, No. 8 North Carolina, No. 13 Illinois (possibly), No. 21 Virginia Tech and No. 22 Temple. Five Maryland opponents received votes: Texas (possibly), Florida State, N.C. State, Miami and Georgia Tech.

I can't believe sorry ass VT is ranked. That shows you what a joke the pre-season rankings are.

It goes to show just how far the program has fallen under the stewardship of Gary Williams who should be fired immediately, have all references to his tenure removed from the school, his degree revoked, and permanetly barred from campus for the rest of his life...

Very simple suggestion:
Post the damn poll (and all polls, for that matter) in a table. Enough of the "...round out the top ten" nonsense.

Posted by: MerlinTerps | October 28, 2010 2:14 PM | Report abuse

My take: I wish I could vote for both the choices. The polls ARE meaningless, but not getting one vote also shows a lack of respect for what Gary Williams does with his teams year in, year out.

17 consecutive winnings seasons
14 NCAA Tourney appearances in 17 years
14 consecutive 19+ win seasons
11 consecutive round 1 wins in the tourney
4 ACC regular season/conference tourney titles
2 final fours
1 national championship

people like barny demonstrate the utter ignorance of many fans who whine about votes in polls and bring up all this nonsense about what happened almost 2 decades ago...guess what barny? The poll is based upon the team that Gary is fielding THIS YEAR, not the one with Juan Dixon on it..if you want to get in the polls, you have to win your games and if Gary does that, we will be there...and I am sure he will

The real slap in the face is that Wofford got more votes than Maryland. Really? Wofford?

I've got the Terps ranked in the top 10.

C: Jordan Williams
PF: Dino Gregory
SF: Cliff Tucker
SG: Sean Mosley
PG: Adrian Bowie

Those five are going to be able to run with anyone in the country. Stoglin, Parker and Howard are going to help quite a bit too.

Get ready for a fun season!

GO TERPS!!!

Boy this argument makes a whole lot of sense considering this is a PRE-SEASON poll. How are you supposed to win games to get into a PRE-SEASON poll? And the national championship occurred 8 years ago, not "almost 2 decades ago." I'm really not sure it's even possible for you to come off any more clueless. Day in day out, you make the most uninformed, baseless comments about our Terps football and bball teams.

Another top 50 prospect made their decision on Thursday.
Nick Faust, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard out of Baltimore (Md.) City College, will announce for the Maryland Terrapins during a press conference this afternoon, per a source.

Maryland spent a considerable amount of time recruiting Faust, a four-star prospect. Bino Ranson, a first year assistant at Maryland, and Keith Booth were the point men on his recruitment.

Faust also strongly considered Marquette, Villanova, Florida State and Oregon State.

With the coming commitment by Faust, Maryland will now have a pair of 2011 prospects on board. Faust joins three-star point guard Sterling Gibbs to make up their two-man recruiting class.

Faust, a four-star recruit, is ranked No. 41 overall in the class of 2011.

So TerpHaterMA, what's your excuse for UNC being ranked THIS YEAR pre-season #8 when they didn't even make the F'ing Tourny LAST YEAR.

Actually, let me help you that, it's because it's UNC. They get the benefit of the doubt. Gary/UMD unfortunately, doesn't get that kind of respect.

And does anyone really believe that VT is a ranked team? It's pre-season crap. I don't ever buy the hype.

Posted by: Section505203 | October 28, 2010 3:47 PM | Report abuse

I love it when people take MD for granted. That's motivation. Gary has a young bench, but time and again he's proved he can bring them up to speed quickly. Williams and Mosely both started in their freshman years. I'm looking forward seeing which of the new freshmen start this year. But none HAS to start. The three seniors, Bowie, Tucker and Gregory are capable and at times excellent players. It's going to be another fun year, because the Terps retain their most important man on the floor, Gary Williams.

Posted by: paul6554 | October 28, 2010 4:08 PM | Report abuse

It doesn't matter. Gary will have the team ready and they will knock off top ten teams like every year.

Terphater will continue to take out his redsox frustration on the Terps until next baseball season.

Section 5..you are dumb but do you expect me to believe that you are so stupid that you cant read.....you ignorantly use LAST years performance to justify or invalidate a preseason ranking for THIS year, which is exactly what I said NOT to do....in the case of UNC, their ranking is based upon the players that williams has coming back as well as the new recruits...even a simpleton like you can understand that...and if in your paranoid little world, UNC got all the breaks just because they are UNC, then they would have been included in the tourney last year...in either case, if they are good they will win their games and justify the ranking..and if not, then they will lose and be out of the rankings so go change your diaper and get ready for basketball

Man....this board is the worst.

Posted by: fushezzi | October 28, 2010 4:30 PM | Report abuse

TerpHaterMA,

You're one who said it should be based on THIS YEAR.

Here's your quote in case you forgot:

"The poll is based upon the team that Gary is fielding THIS YEAR, not the one with Juan Dixon on it..if you want to get in the polls, you have to win your games and if Gary does that, we will be there...and I am sure he will"

Which makes my point. How could one assume that a UNC team have gotten that much better with unproven freshman coming in to jump from unranked NIT team, to preseason #8. While Gary's unproven freshman get him squat in the rankings.

Three letters: UNC

You're worse than Poopy McPoop/Dixon the Dog.

There is no way you're a Terp fan. I'm thinking VT, UNC, or Duke. Don't go away mad, just go away.

meh. Pretty tame stuff as boards go.

They shouldn't be ranked but to not get a single vote is strange. They will have an up and down season.

Posted by: maverick5 | October 28, 2010 5:07 PM | Report abuse

section 5...now you are really sounding extra dumb...yes I said based upon THIS YEAR...you keep going back to UNC LAST YEAR and then on top of it, you compare UNC unproven frosh to UMD unproven frosh as if they are all the same.....are you smart enough to understand incoming freshman have different levels of talent? does that register with you? and following that are you also intelligent enough to know that its the COMBINATION of those incoming freshman and the returning players that make up how good a team can be THIS YEAR??? Does that register with your vast intellect????

You are a real moron and its people like you who give other schools the ability to look down their noses at UMD and its fans....are you a couch-burner??? Or do you still live at home and your parents hide the matches from you????

Big terp fan here, but I find myself agreeing with TerpfanMA's overall point. I don't think they are one of the best 25 teams on paper at this point, though I do expect them to finish the season ranked.

UNC and MD both have unproven frosh, but UNC's are coming in at a much higher talent level than the Terp frosh; any neutral observer would agree with that. Obviously, that doesn't mean they will be better, but a preseason poll is based on projections and forecasts, and UNC projects better than UMD.

This all being said, I think Cliff Tucker is the most underrated player in the ACC and has a real shot at first team if he can focus the whole season. I have high hopes for this year's team, I think a top 20 finish is well within reach. But I would absolutely not rank them in the top 25 on paper right now and would think any voter who does is a bit crazy.

Posted by: OldNumber3 | October 28, 2010 5:36 PM | Report abuse

No doubt that BB rules on this site. The poll question posed only two choices, neither of which reflect my view: What a surprise! Pre-season rankings of ALL types are stupid and counter-productive. There is no way we should expect to be ranked. We lost 3 of our best players and we have key developmental issues. We will need to earn a ranking. The last thing in the world this team needs is any measure of being highly thought of.

Posted by: petecard | October 28, 2010 5:39 PM | Report abuse

TerpfanMA, it takes a thick skin to put up with the abuse from the Koolaid drinkers in the Hall of Mediocrity Fame. But keep speaking up for high standards and don't let tham label you a hater because you care about our programs being in the elite category. I'm with you.

Posted by: petecard | October 28, 2010 5:42 PM | Report abuse

I think one of the fundamental differences of opinion people on this board have is whether it is possible to passionately root for a team while also thinking they suck. Now, I'm not saying the Terps suck this year, quite the opposite, I think they will surprise people and have a season that surpasses most of our expectations.

But take Terp football last year for example. I rooted for them. Watched every game I could. And I thought they really sucked.

Acknowledging that your team isn't worldbeaters (yet) doesn't mean you are any less of a fan, it just shows you can be logical.

Posted by: OldNumber3 | October 28, 2010 5:54 PM | Report abuse

IT DOES NOT MATTER!!!

MD is not a sexy team in the eyes of these folks and Gary does not play the PR game for his school. MD has zero top profile recruits and Gary Williams approach of building teams without 1 and dones is not attractive to these voters nor is it a proven success model. Bottom line is go out there, play and win. if the norm holds true MD will beat Duke or UNC at least once this year, but lose/struggle with UNC Wilmington or some school like that.

Petecard, oldnumber3...no worries here...it is true that when facts are not on their side, that is when the name calling comes out....anyway, here is my opinion as a long time UMD fan and alum..

Terp BBall: I love Gary and am a huge fan of his and our Terps...I dont really care too much about Gary's recruiting because he has proven in the end, he gets players that fit his system and wins with them

Terp FBall: I think the Fridge is a mediocre coach at best and generally produces mediocre underachieving teams..I appreciate all he did for UMD back in 2001-2003 but he subsequently squandered much of the goodwill and improvements bestowed on the program since then..we are on par with the bottom feeders in a pretty weak conference. What really bothers me about the Fridge is his focus on 6 wins and a bowl game...sorry fatty, beating Duke, FIU, Morgan State and WF does not a successful season make when your teams are unprepared for real competition and get blown into the weeds by decent teams....

I realize many of you couldnt care less about my opinion but there is a certain creepy internet stalker on here who likes to save peoples comments so he can regurgitate them 2 or 3 years from now and I want my opinions to be on the record

Gary has them right where he likes them, unrecognized, unheralded, ignored, a footnote to college basketball in 2010-2011. It will be great fun to watch the coach work his magic with his young team, and to see them grow. Duke has the big bulls eye on its back, again right where Gary likes to see Duke ranked. Enjoy the year!

MD should win 20-25, which should have them ranked. It really just shows that the writers were not paying attention to the MD's depth last year. Jordan Williams is the best big man in the ACC.

It's unclear to me why any Maryland fan cares anything about any basketball polls. Whether the Terps are good enough to be ranked this year will be seen in short order; with that said, the pollsters have always given Maryland short shrift. During their national championship season, when they were demonstrably the best team in the country, they were not ranked number one at any time during the season, including the week in February after their destruction of previously top-ranked Duke. The Terps should just play the games and ignore the polls. The beauty of college basketball is that the champions are decided on the floor, not in the newspapers.
