Terps Open Against Up-Tempo Seattle

By Liz Clarke

Maryland flexed its decisive advantage in speed and athleticism in routing Florida Southern, 106-58, in exhibition play last week. Monday’s season-opener against Seattle should offer a tougher test of legs and lungs.

The Seattle Redhawks play an up-tempo style offense and aggressive defense that drew widespread notice after their 99-48 victory over Oregon State last season. They’re coached by Cameron Dollar, who played four seasons at UCLA and was a member of the Bruins 1995 NCAA championship squad.

“He has put together a very aggressive, running team,” said Maryland Coach
Gary Williams. “They play 10 players and press. They like to get up and down the court.”

Adds senior forward Dino Gregory, “They’ve got four or five who can shoot the ball at all times, so it’s going to be a really good test for us.”

Seattle, a small Jesuit school with about 7,500 students, was a basketball force in the 1950s and, with star player Elgin Baylor (for whom its home court is named), reached the NCAA Final Four in 1958. After downgrading athletics in the 1980s, the Redhawks are in the process of transitioning from Division II to Division I.

The Terps, meantime, are transitioning from one senior-led team to another, with Gregory, Adrian Bowie and Cliff Tucker ascending to the starting lineup after three seasons playing behind gifted upperclassmen.

“It’s a whole new slate for me,” Tucker said following Sunday morning’s practice. “I’m not worried about what happened the last three years. I feel like I’m a freshman coming in, my last year. Coach is giving me a chance to be a great player this year.”

Terps players have voted Gregory and junior Sean Mosley co-captains for the 2010-11 season.

Does anyone know if this game is being televised?

I believe the game will be on Comcast Sportsnet. Go Terps!

If we don't win this game by 30 point then Gary needs to go. We can't settle for mediocrity this year.

As a public service:

For those without Comcast Sportsnet. Sites provided originally by Mr. Poopy McPoop who many hope to see return to the boards. Poopy if you are reading this, you are missed (but please drop any references to Barno's dog but otherwise snipe on). Censorship sucks.

Hugh, what a lot of people who invoke censorship and the 1st Amendment often overlook is that speech can be legitimately limited or "censored", for instance when you are using a private medium or when your speech infringes upon the rights of others.

There is a clear and concise list of rules that we all agree to when we create our online WaPo accounts. Poopy violated just about every single one. Over and over. There is nothing wrong with the Washington Post deciding that enough was enough and that if Poopy couldn't play by the same rules the rest of us do (i.e. impersonating others, making libelous claims, encouraging illegal or violent acts, using obscene, sexually degrading, or pornographic comments, etc etc etc etc) he had to go.

I'm excited to see this team perform in real live game action. I hope Gary really lets the newcomers log some minutes, becuase I'd really like to see what some of them can do.

Are you kidding ?? So a win by 28 and you want to fire one of the best in BB. Get off your high horse and stay away from the coffee.

dcperspective, yes he was kidding. He is mocking similar comments made in the past by the Petecards and Poopy_McPoops of this blog.

Posted by: Barno1 | November 8, 2010 2:04 PM | Report abuse

Actually, I think GW needs someone to call the plays and I hear a certain member of the Fridge's staff is going to be available.

As for Barno's repulsive and (as usual) self-serving comments about free speech all I can say is... pathetic. But, Barno, isn't that your last name?

I join HGR in looking forward to future appearances by Poopy.

Definitely looking forward to basketball and excited about this years team! Go Terps!!

Petecard,

Can you do us a favor and please tell us exactly which part of my comments were "repulsive"? I simply said that the WaPo has a right to enforce their existing Terms of Use policy, which Poopy broke repeatedly...so what part of those comments were "repulsive", and why exactly. I'd really love to see your defense for why someone should be allowed to break the rules all the time while the rest of us obey those same rules.

Poopy is still around. He made the first comment on this blog post.

And dcperspective....Barno is right, I was being sarcastic about requiring a 30 point win.

Here Barny...let me help you out....you are a creepy internet troll who rarely comments on the article in question and instead uses all of your ink and creative powers to rag on posters who are voicing opinions that you dont agree with and then telling them not to post....its people like you that make it hard for me to convince folks in Mass that UMD isnt just a bunch of hairy southern rednecks who burn couches....get it now?

Poor Poopy. Exiled to Terrapin Insider Siberia. Let this be a lesson to all of you. Barno-Stalin WILL NOT TOLERATE DISSENT.

Fushezzi, that wasn't him. Mydogsnameisdixon is a good dude, a regular commenter...DixonTheDog is the deranged version of Poopy who lost his posting privileges.

Posted by: Barno1 | November 8, 2010 5:09 PM | Report abuse

caphillterp, I have no problem with dissent. There are plenty of people on here who I disagree with, Jpfterps for example disagrees with just about every word I say regarding the terps/skins/wizards...but he does so in a reasonable, logical way and without resorting to infantile attacks.

And fyi, I didn't ban Poopy and I didn't create the rules which Poopy broke...The Washington Post did.

If worst comes to worst there is game tracker. If the reception is at 6:30, by 8:15 most will have gathered at the nearest TV. My cousin was scheduled to get married during the MD-Kansas game (yes that one)...SHE changed the time of the wedding so that we could watch it during the end of the reception and afterwards. EVERY Toast mentioned this fact but most of the crowd clearly agreed with the decision.

It was one wedding where no one left early. Of course, when the Terps were getting blown out of the water early, she was screaming at the TV: "I moved up the time of my wedding to see this sh*t" and other foul comments that did not make the wedding video.

Barno1, you're right. You personally didn't ban Poopy or create the rules. But you reported him to the Brownshirts. May God have mercy on your soul if you resort to "infantile attacks".

Posted by: caphillterp | November 8, 2010 5:40 PM | Report abuse

Barno is the hall monitor of Terrapin Insider, caphillterp. He decides who is a true fan and who decides who deserves to have an opinion about the quality of Maryland sports. Play by his rules and it's smooth sailing.

fushezzi,

Obviously you were referring to the football team and Freigen. Gary = National Championship and is not going any where till he decides. We were a buzzer beater from advancing to the sweet 16 last year and co ACC Champions.

And if they do, will you go? Guess you assume you own the University, right? If you don't get salesman of the year at McDonald's, should you get fired?

Ummm...can we get to the game peeps? JWill is more of a beast. And the Frosh are just incredibly athletic and talented! Bowie seems lost even though GW wants him to lead this team.
Me thinks this team will really jell around January. Pittsburgh and Villinova will be highly contested, but probably losses....this year. Next year....look out!!!!

Not willing to pile on Bowie just yet. He played a competent game. It did seem the team had butterfingers in the early going and dropeed quite a few passes. NO DOUBT Stoglin AND Howard are the real deal.

Great win.
