Morning reading: Assane Sene hopes to play for Virginia vs. Maryland

By Matt Bonesteel

Good morning.

If you haven't read Steve Yanda's profile of new Maryland football coach Randy Edsall, please do. After reading about Edsall's life story, do you feel more comfortable with him as coach?

Over at Cavaliers Journal, Yanda writes that Virginia center Assane Sene will play against Maryland on Thursday night despite a bum ankle. Playing major minutes with Mike Scott out for the season, Sene is averaging 5.8 points and 6.8 rebounds in 22.3 minutes per game over Virginia's past six contests.

Michigan State has dismissed junior guard Korie "Bleeping" Lucious, about 20-odd games too late for Maryland fans' liking.

Less than a week after subduing the Terrapins and a big, enthusiastic crowd at Comcast Center, Virginia Tech lost its cool in front of what looked like about 1,000 drowsy fans at Georgia Tech, losing 72-57.

Elsewhere in the ACC on Tuesday night, Clemson came back from a 19-point deficit to defeat North Carolina State, 60-50. The Wolfpack scored just 16 points in the second half and made only one basket over the game's last eight minutes. At 2-4 in the conference, is the clock ticking on N.C. State Coach Sidney Lowe, whose team has lost four of five? Lowe is in his fifth season and, barring a late charge, again will fail to lead the Wolfpack to the NCAA tournament. Before Lowe took over, Herb Sendek took N.C. State to five straight NCAA tournaments. Just sayin'.

Only one game on the ACC schedule tonight: North Carolina at Miami (7:30 p.m., ESPN2). The Hurricanes are banged up and reeling, having lost four of five. Ol' Roy is still apologizing for bad-mouthing the Tar Heels' fans on his radio show last week.

Think of it as an appetizer to the main course, which is San Diego State at BYU (RPI No. 4 vs. RPI No. 1) at 10 p.m. on CBS College Sports.
