Randy Edsall expected to sign five-year deal with Maryland

By Steve Yanda

Maryland football coach Randy Edsall is expected to sign a five-year deal with the school, a source with direct knowledge of the situation said Tuesday.

Edsall, whose hire as Ralph Friedgen's successor was announced Monday, has signed a term sheet that puts him on the university's payroll while his representatives and Maryland officials work out the details of his contract.

Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said Monday that Edsall's guaranteed annual compensation would be similar to that of Friedgen, whose contract was terminated effective Sunday.

The university bought out the final year of Friedgen's contract, which was worth roughly $2 million. Edsall made roughly $1 million at Connecticut this past season.

Anderson, who is in his first year at Maryland, signed a five-year contract in October.

As long as Edsall has the highest graduation rate...amongst African Americans...from state schools...that played in a bowl game...once ever few years....I am happy.

That's a tremendous feat ladies and gentlemen. Forget good to great, it's good to tremendous!

At least they won't be paying a premium for Fridge-clone, I mean Edsall. Five years seems pretty standard, but hopefully it has a more palatable buyout language than Fridge's deal. It should not cost the school $4 million if this program is still sitting in the same position or worse 3 years from now.

Here is an old article with quote from UMD AD when Vandy was hired:

"Everyone has said that he is a dynamic coach, that he is knowledgeable, a relentless recruiter and a tireless worker. He's done twice what we want a coach to do: build up a program. And the rebuilding jobs were at good academic schools in Colorado and Northwestern. Based on those credentials, he was an early front runner."

Edsall hasn't even signed a contract yet? Anderson is a clown. And we have him for another 4.5 years? Ugh.

TerpfanMA: The biggest problem with Vandy was his terrible offense. I remember sitting in the student section placing bets as to whether they would (1) run left (2) run right or (3) throw an incomplete pass. It was awful. Literally only 3 plays in his playbook. Sadly, Edsall had an equally pathetic offense at UConn. I sure hope I'm wrong. Our only hope is we have Danny O'Brien.

Anyone want to start a fund to buyout Anderson? That's what I'm doing if I win the Megamillions tonight . . . .

TF2001....just to show you how things come full circle, I was a freshman during Claibornes last season and our chant (in between rum and cokes) was "Wysocki Left, Wysocki Right, Wysocki Up The Middle, Punt"

Bobby Ross came in the next year and it was a whole new world of College Football...for some of us, it was the first time they had seen a pass

I will gladly donate to the Fire Anderson fund. Anderson is a joke of a joke. Not as easy to buy out an AD, though less expensive.

Posted by: Barno1 | January 4, 2011 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Edsall is not the problem. The problem is Anderson. He says Ralph will stay then he fires him. He says it is a business decision that he needs to hire someone to creat some excitemnent and he hires a Ralph clone. My guess is that ticket sales will decline at least for the next two years even if Edsall is a success. By the way, how much of next years success will be credited to Ralph who put in all the work.

Like "Fire Kevin Anderson (Terps AD)" on facebook. It has some funny photos.

Gosh, That is dumb 5 years unless the last three years are not guaranteed. He is making $1M and you offer him the opportunity to create a top program. Offer him $1.5 for 2 years and see how he does. Now I guess you announce 5yr. to make it easier to recruit. I think we should give him a chance (What other option do we have?).

I sure hope this AD has a way out if he is a bust. Danny O needs to feel comfortable he is here for the next three years, so that is good reason to offer 5 otherwise it is another reason for Danny O to leave.

Well we need an out, hope we have one if he can not recruit for 2012 and 2013.

Hay, Gary can sure pick the chumps. Exactly how does beating Colgate 90 to 40 get you ready for Duke. Well most likely Duke will blow us out of the building and we can look foward to that upset somewhere on the schedule that will get us a mid level seed in the NIT.

We wait until 2013 to see if football will improve and 2013 until Gary goes back to the NCAA for two games. Good luck Anderson soon the fans will ask for an ACC only season ticket and let everyone come in free to watch MD play someone in the pre-season. (That is all games excep ACC, Big Ten challenge, and BBT clasic, Oh yea and the traditional early season Tour. we play in and lose 2 or 3 games.)

Now the sniping period has started and it is almost comical that I am not part of it. I was surprised that the contract hasn't been signed because Edsall actually spoke about signing something on Sunday at 5:45. But that aside, c'mon folks, this deal is done and we need to focus on the positive. 5 years is pretty standard if you don't want recruits to sniff uncertainty and if you don't want to be talking about an extension in the middle of the second year. After all we aren't paying this guys a top salary.

So let's put this in perspective. Read Pete Thamel's article on the link below and think about how the "rocket scientist" AD at Michigan has handled their coaching situation. Like KA, he is new to the job. But he is more like KP (Kevin Plank) in that he is an alum who made a fortune (in the pizza business) and decided to "give back" to his alma mater. It's an interesting comparison.

Those of you calling our AD dumb, an idiot, a joke, whatever, will be totally miserable when the Terps improve. It is looking pretty good: we get 11 years younger, an enthusiastic new start, DOB and other players and recruits don't get chased away by a spread offense, Brown stays, and some top football minds are praising the new direction.

Of course, I am a Terp fan, so maybe I just don't see how awful it all is.

Posted by: EdDC | January 5, 2011 10:14 AM | Report abuse

I guarantee edsall doesn't last the 5 years. I can see him having early success with fridge/franklin's players and possibly playing in the ACC Championship game, in which case, he ditches the team and moves on to his next "dream job." Or if he fails to make a bowl and he gets canned. In either case, it seems to me (at this point in time) that neither KA or RE are a man of his word.

The AD is dumb only because he fell for Randy's BS. I played at uconn when Skip Holtz (Univ of S. Fla) was coach and left. Edsall eventually built uconn into a winner, but only after the first few years of totally dividing the team to a point of near mutiny. He is a coach that will bench senior starters from the old coach for true freshmen he recruits. He has thrown out results of team votes for captains when his personally favored players didn't get elected and appointed them as the team captains. Playing time is determined as much on who kisses up to him as it does on talent and knowing the Playbook. Good luck Terp fans with your new coach. You allowed Randy to do what he's been trying to do for 12 years, get out of uconn for a sucker willing to write a fat paycheck. I apologize to the Terp nation, but you're not a marquee program and you're not getting a marquee coach. If Randy was as good as your AD makes him sound...... Miami, Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame, Southern Cal and all the other mega million dollar schools would've grabbed him by now instead of the dozen or so interviews of schools who passed him by. The positive is he's not Mike Leach who might abuse the players, but has the same mentality of taking credit as a team for wins and placing blame for loses solely on the players, not himself. Enjoy your new coach Maryland faithful, and hope you can fire him for failure before he pulls off another incarnation of the Baltimore colts and leaves in the middle of the night with no warning like how he did to his uconn huskies that he claimed to be so loyal to.

I do think we need to move on...the AD has been dishonest with everyone from the beginning about this whole thing and the lies just keep getting bigger....it really strains the bounds of credulity to make the case that we need RE and have paid an additional $2M to get him...

The Big East? What a joke...just a loose gathering of single sport schools...anyone been to a Marquette or Georgetown football game lately?

When was the last time MD went 3 games without an offensive TD?

To make the case that he is better than Fridge you have to go all the way down to "he has a higher graduation rate of african american players than any state school who recently went to a bowl game played between 3-6pm on Jan 1"

Moving from DivAA to DivA??? The paperwork had already been processed before he stepped foot on campus...other than playing new opponents and giving out more scholarships, what exactly did he do?

His resume is very similar to KAs....heavy on duties but pretty thin on actual accomplishments....

Make sure you remove your do-rags and caps when he is nearby

Five years, five days, five decades, five months, it doesn't matter.

Edsall will only be as successful as the UMD Administration allows him to be. If they provide him with the same level of support that they provided Fridge, he won't do any better than Fridge did. If they provide him with better support than they did for Fridge, then he has a chance to take the program to the "next level" that everybody claims to want.

However, I have to say, by hiring Edsall over Leach, it looks to me as if it is the same-old, same-old in College Park and the real reason for Fridge's firing is that he wasn't a go-along to get-along kind of guy.

Posted by: CapsNut | January 5, 2011 3:40 PM | Report abuse

I am actually going to take the other side of this decision and say that rather than the "safe" choice, KA made this the "riskiest" of choices because of the way he handled it. Regardless of how you felt about Ralp, he kicked out a coach who was an alum and was in the process of guiding his team to a Bowl Victory and Top 25 ranking. The safest choice would have been to follow through on his committment and get a coach with pizzazz and sizzle to justify his actions. By going the perceived safe route, (with a coach who has not proven he can lace it up with the big guys and statistically is below par with Ralph in almost every significant measure), he has raised the bar so high that it will be almost impossible for the new coach to meet. If RE falls short and does not win 11 games or the ACC championship next season, he will be seen as worse than Ralph and people will rightly question why he wasted $4M of MDs money and he will have NO explanation.

At least with Leach, if he had crashed and burned (unlikely), KA could have said he had previously demonstrated the ability to win against stiff competition....RE on the other hand is barely .500, 1-6 vs WVU, 1-5 vs Rutgers and typically has one of the least productive Offenses in the country....what is KA gonna say then???????

Oh man, gotta love not even turning a computer on for a good 1.5 weeks and than being able to read boatloads of Terp Insider postings (and the accompanying comments that go with them). After doing so I'm more certain than ever that some of the people on here are literally batshti crazy.

1st to the Bowl game. I think we all pretty much knew the Terps would send Fridge out on a good note and they did just that. Kudos.

Personally I have no problem with the hire of Edsall. No one associated with UMD actually ever said that Leach would be the next hire (despite how a certain poster wants to frame it). I mean are most fans disappointed after being led to believe (by outside sources) that Leach would probably be the next coach? Yeah of course but it is what it is and Terps get support no matter what. Right "fans"?

Gotta like how the Terps Bball team looks to have rebounded nicely from their loss to Temple. Hopefully we'll come out firing on all cylinders come Sunday.

What else was funny was reading good 'ol Fargo1 posting quotes from former Terps about how bad this hiring is. Of course what you don't see is Fargo1 posting positive quotes from old Terps who support the hiring (ahem, Sean Merriman, over on The Bog).

My favorite part of reading the past week-and-a-half of old posts has gotta also be some of Fargo1's. I loved how he actually went and called Pete, TerpfanMA, etc. the "worst kind of fan" and "bandwagoners" and etc. Yet I don't ever recall seeing a post from Pete, TerpfanMA, etc. where they actually threatened to boycott the Terps. Gotta love the double-standard this piece of shti lives by. All Fargo1 is, is a glorified internet bully and I highly doubt he'd say 99% of the insults he does to anyones face.

Of course it's okay for Fargo1 and his band of merry d0uchers to go ahead and slam and criticize whatever they want but when "the other side" (you know the side of Terp fans that won't accept mediocrity) is critical of the Terps we're called the worst kind of fan, bandwagoners, etc.

So Fargo1 since and your clan of shtieaters are all about using the google, go ahead and head over to google and type in "message to harry manback" and give that a good read.

Oh, and Fargo1 tell us all again the stud NFL players that Fridge churned out year after year while the coach at UMD.

I mean, the Fridge has put so many Hall of Fame quality players in the NFL it's mind boggling that Fridge isn't in the Football HOF himself yet.

DTD -

the one thing you did miss was Petecard and TFMA AGREEING with Barno on the Edsall hire. There was significant disagreement on the firing of RF, although the WAY it all went down was universally blasted.

I like TFMA's 11 game measure for next season. RE, for better or worse, needs to deliver a huge season out of the gates...or else he's not going anywhere.

The firing of RF has made almost all of the regular posters elevate their expectations going forward. 9-4 next year is failure in pretty much everyone's books. That said, RF would have had the same expectations with or without JF.

I seriously loved the play-calling in the RFK game. Wondered wtf happened to D. Scott all season.

Predictions for Sunday's game?

MD by 7. Miraculous turnaround in FT shooting by our bigs. JP and DG step up to combine for 20 points. Who starts at PG though?

There was almost universal agreement on an issue on this blog for maybe the first time ever (and a key issue at that). But Poopy comes in and lamely tries to stir the pot. There was some actual harmony on the board the last 10 days or so--not coincidentally the week and a half that PoopTheDog went on hiatus.

Why does it matter how long the contract is for? One year, three years or five years doesn't matter. Randy Edsall didn't honor his contract and neither did the University of Maryland. Edsall didn't even fly home with "his" team after the Fiesta Bowl. Instead he felt the need to sneak off in the night. I remember when the Baltimore Colts snuck off in the night.
A classless act then and a classless act now. Is this the kind of person that you want for a coach? Good riddance.

And here's why Maryland needs way more coaching change, try a program makeover!

70. Maryland (58) $9.86

A 9.86 million dollar football operating budget. That's dead last in the ACC and has to be at the bottom of BCS schools.

-->Three letters:DOB. ECU had one of the worst rush defenses in the country and we took advantage of it. Look at how our rush did against NC St, negative yards. It has a lot to do with our weak offensive line. Look how effective Bruce Campbell could've been. Anyways the passing game worked out for the most part this year and led DOB to be ACC ROY. Case closed!

Break,

Does RF's $2M count towards the FB budget? We might just jump multiple spots based on the fact that we are paying two HCs.

Pete,

What if the RFK bowl ends up being our highlight for the next few years? Not rooting for RE to fail, but agree with TFMA (oh HELL no, not on his or your taste in baseball teams....) he was the riskiest choice in that he arrives with no upside, and clear downside if he does not deliver 11 wins next season. If many or some of us were disgruntled before with the FB program, 8-5 next year will take the disgruntlement up by orders of magnitude. Leach at least had the freakshow entertainment value upside which might have led to increase tix sales. Oh yeah, and he beat some pretty great teams in his career.

I'd still rather see them win with RF. And that part of this whole mess stinks. If RE wins big, I suspect he'll leave this dream job for the next one. If he loses, meaning delivers mediocre 7 & 8 win seasons or worse...we're probably stuck with him.

So the best case scenario for me is that he wins huge next year and the AD is then faced with the challenge of retaining him when the time comes.

No censorship from me. But joking about dead dogs hits kinda close to home.

From a purely "I enjoy the intelligent bashining that goes on on this board" perspective and knowing some of the funny stuff poopy posted in the past, he gives away the moral high ground too easily and then has to climb uphill when bashing Barno (and unleashes the sympathy factor) about The late Dixon when he used to skewer away. In short, it kinda puts him off of his game. Ok, getting BANNED is what truly put him off of his game. I sincerely hope he works with his broadband provider to get a new IP address and chooses a different name. His daily posts on the RI on his daily deposits at the porcelain bank are missed and were one of the few reasons that board was worth visiting. And I considered using Dumpy McDump as a screen name once upon a time instead of HGR. My first post was Kind of in his defense (remember when WE were all accused of being the same person?).

Ok posting using an iPad sucks

Btw, my buddy from Duke has CONCEDED that MD will prevail in Durham. His reasoning is that someone will beat coach-k-the-rat-face and that GW is the most likely team to do it.....and he's been watching JW up close all season. And he complains daily about the mistake BW made by choosing MD over Duke.

KA had a plan in place. Go one more year with Ralph and open the HC hiring process, with Franklin invited to interview too.

When Franklin left, an adjustment was called for. Do you still wait a year before setting your program up for the next five or more years? Hire a new OC for one year? Or do you plan for the future now?

First decision: Ralph was not the coach for the next 5 years. It is not just a question of age. If Gary looked like Ralph, you would want him to take a break and tend to his health. So you make the unpopular decision to let Ralph go. If Ralph is as great a coach as we all know him to be, he will rebound just fine, and get a great job--once he secures his health.

So you get the best HC you can get. I talked with a knowledgeable but very upset UConn fan yesterday, who could not imagine why his coach would leave for MD--a lateral, he called it. Anyway, I can see the whole process, a logical, future-oriented one. The new guy will be fine!

ADs, unlike fans, have to think more than one season ahead. Of course another farewell season or two with Ralph would be great, but at what cost to your future? What our AD did was to give the Terps the best chance for success down the road.

HughG, I agree with Terpfan and have posted several times my disappointment. I wanted Leach. It's easy to look back now and say that we would be better off or just as well off with RF. But I was never for giving him an extension before about the middle of next season and it became clear with a coaching exodus that a lame duck scenario would not work: it would hurt recruiting and he would not be able to hire good assistants. So we have RE and the only thing we can do now is to root for his success. So I am moving on. By the way I emailed KA with these same sentiments and I also asked him to remind GW that it has been 7 years since a Sweet 16 and that our BB program is no longer elite. Next week, starting Sunday is a very big week. We should beat Wake and we really need to beat either Duke or Nova. Otherwise, the upstream current we are already swimming against will be even stronger.

Hey Liz, with Duke coming up, could we get some BB posts? The RE/KA issue has been beaten to death and we're chasing our own tails here...

Also, it wouldn't hurt for someone to keep an eye on national signing day. While the class is ranked 38th on rivals, we need these recruits to stick to their commitments to Maryland.

Duke and Nova are both beatable, especially given their lack of size to counter JW. To win we'll need to hit foul shots and bury a three every once in a while, but most importantly play tough perimeter defense. Agree pete that we need to pull out one of these two games, since it's looking like that ACC will be lucky to get 4 teams in the tourney and we've got no signature wins to date.

"Break,

Does RF's $2M count towards the FB budget? We might just jump multiple spots based on the fact that we are paying two HCs."
-->The figure was 2010, so most likely your right. But it's still utterly pathetic we are the bottom of a weak conference atleast by BCS standards and the fact Uconn is ahead of us says a lot. My whole point is that if they want to go from "good to great," they need to increase their budget BY A LOT.

-->Here's where I disagree with that DOB is a freshman, I don't know if a new system for the ACC ROY is the best thing for the next 3 years of the program. I would've given Ralph a four year extension. If you're concerned about his health, put that into the contract. Plenty of coaches have buyouts after all.

-->Interesting. I emailed KA twice and only got a generic response to my first email (announcing the search process). I mentioned in the email that I was a football STH. You would think he would send a courtesy email back but no, not a reply.

Love our chances to get a win vs Duke or Villanova. The MD teams that have won down in Durham were not our most experienced teams (save for maybe the 06/07 season). When we've won down there, it was usually with less experienced Terps teams like this one. If anything, we are now due down there after the last 3 years of getting slaughtered there.

Hgh, what do you expect from Poopy? This is the guy who used to invent comments and then falsely attribute them to me by pretending he had copy/pasted them from an earlier thread.

This is the guy who went around this entire website with the OG_Barno handle impersonating me.

This is the guy who encouraged me to kill myself by copy/pasting a note all over the blogs about putting a gun to my head and not missing this time.

This is a guy who said he would never make a joke about someone's dead dog, and then a few months later started posting under the name DixonTheDog with comments about how he was the "LIVING Dixon" and mocking his death by claiming I had murdered my dog.

This is a guy that goes around calling people racists just to start crap.

It's not about moral high ground, it's about people who contribute to this board vs psychopaths who are completely out of their mind. It's time you stopped defending this lunatic. Sure, he had a semi-funny comment or two way back when...when he REALLY tried hard. But he was always a nut. And this board was doing so much better when he was gone.

Edsall made $1.6 million at Uconn last season; not sure I consider that "roughly $1 million." Uconn was due to give him a raise, but nothing could stand in the way of this "dream job"..

If all you care about is the money you spend on the coach, yes, the clause would work. But what about continuity of the program, the team's performance, the impact on recruiting, the uncertainty, the need for an interim and then a permanent HC? Money alone can't cover that kind of disruption. Our AD decided to avoid all of that and just get settled for the future now. Smart.

My wish for Ralph is that he gets in shape so that some university will want him for four years. As it stands now, how many universities would go after Ralph for a top HC job in a good program? Michigan? Who? Ralph needs to get in shape for himself and his family, true, and the new four-year job can come next.

Barno,

I'm with you on Poopy/DTD. The guy is a person of little quality.

He used to post on the Nats Journal as an O's fan with the moniker "O's Exec", then he became Poopy McPoop. So I have seen his knuckleheaded posts for far to long.

HGR, please stop making excuses for a very flawed, disturbed individual.

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, guess what...

-->You could always extend his contract after that, JoePa still going strong at 84 after all, well not really but you get my point. Let's be honest here, unless Maryland increases their budget, we don't have think that long term anyways, they won't be competitive. They were going to be competetive with the current roster led by DOB. If he regresses even next year, Edsall FAIL, if he succeeds, than he won with Fridge/Franklin's players.

Break20:
You are correct in reported budget, but find the details before you share misleading information. The Maryland football budget does NOT include debt service or game operation expenses as do other budgets schools report. If you compare apples to appes, Maryland has the second largest operating budget in the ACC. The details shall set you free - trust me, I know!

Getting rid of Sollazzo was a big mistake! I played for the Terps when Roy Lester was let go and Claiborne came in.. He kept one guy a D Line Coach named Ron Rice who had a little unknown project on the DL line named Randy White and we all what happened to Randy. Sollazzo took a kid that no one recruited Joe Vellano and made him an 2nd Team All ACC as a sophomore.. Not bad.
I can tell you this there are a lot of Ex Terp players that are Livid about letting Sollazzo go at least 100 from the count on one of the last steaming emails that I have received in the last day.. Yours truly one of them! He was a connection with lots of the players in the 80's when he was with Fridge and Bobby Ross and the last 10 years of kids that have played. And most good coaches will tell you that ex players are not only some of the best eyes and ears a head Coach can have but also a good foundation for a strong program.

I can tell all you fans out the and me that this whole drama was an insult to Maryland Athletics. And for ex players like me, letting Dave go was the icing on the cake.. I will not renew my 8 season tickets that I have had for 25 years.

I noticed that TT was put on probation etc by the NCAA for violations regarding text msgs sent to recruits, including over 200 football players during Mike Leach's time there. Maybe this had something to do with MD not hiring him. Isn't there some sort of rule where NCAA sanctions follow a coach if he changes jobs? Not sure how that works.

-->Yeah the sanctions follow an individual sanctioned from school to school. Kelvin Sampson is currently banned under that.

I see that Bud Foster interviewed for the Pitt job yesterday. Wonder if our so-called "Search Committee" even bothered to contact him to gauge his interest, if any.

The more I read about the "Search", the stranger the whole process seems to have been. Hopefully some day we will know what really happened - or didn't happen. Our AD is still trying mightily to spin the final outcome.
