Kevin Lempa in running for DC job; Andre Powell frontrunner for RBs coach position

By Steve Yanda

Kevin Lempa, who spent the past four seasons on former coach Ralph Friedgen's staff at Maryland, spoke with Terrapins coach Randy Edsall on Friday about the team's vacant defensive coordinator position, according to a source with intimate knowledge of the situation.

Lempa was not initially retained by Edsall after Edsall was hired Jan. 2, but the source said Lempa is in contention to be brought back on board to replace Don Brown, who left Maryland on Friday to become the defensive coordinator at Connecticut. Lempa previously served as a defensive coordinator at Hawaii (2000-02) and at Darmouth College (1991-96). He spent the last two seasons as Maryland's safeties coach and was the team's secondary coach the two seasons prior to that.

Also, former Clemson running backs and special teams coach Andre Powell has interviewed for the vacant Maryland running backs coach position, the source said. Powell -- who worked at Virginia (1996-2000) and North Carolina (2001-06) before joining the Clemson staff in 2007 -- is considered the frontrunner to replace David Walker, who left Edsall's staff last week to take an assistant position with the NFL's Indianapolis Colts.

Powell was fired by Clemson coach Dabo Swinney on Jan. 2. He also reportedly is in contention to be hired as Connecticut's running backs coach, according to the Hartford Courant.

I don't really get the Lempa thing. So Edsall doesn't want to keeping him on as safeties coach but wants him as DC? Doesn't make much sense to me. I'd rather have an ace recruiter like Larry Johnson from PSU. Something the staff currently lacks.

Sounds a little like Jim Zorn w/ the Redskins. We don't want you as our QBs coach, but we'll take you as our Offensive Coordinator. Scratch that, we'll take you as our head coach.

This just continues to spiral. You would think that since the timing of the Brown departure would suggest that he was asked to stay on through signing day, Edsall would have a slate of DC candidates ready, and this position would be filled in a day or 2. This program appears to be sinking to new lows on a daily basis.

Looks like Randy Shannon is going to interview. He'd be a great hire. Ace recruiter and his defenses were always top 10 in the country. Of course, since he would be a great hire, we most likely will not get him and instead hire the DC from Southwest Missouri State.

Kevin Lempa? Who's your source Yanda, Lempa himself?

What people need to know about Steve Yanda is that he doesn't know what he's talking about, which is why he was kicked off the MD beat in basketball. I have no clue why he's commenting or reporting on anything Maryland related.

There was a reason Kevin Lempa wasn't retained by Edsall and the fact that the Post would even let Yanda suggest that he was a possibility for the DC position is laughable and shows how far this paper has fallen in terms of journalism. Yanda, Mike Wise and Eric Prisbell - the Post's 3 stooges!
