Morning links: Martin Breunig picks Maryland

By Matt Bonesteel

Good morning.

German forward Martin Breunig has orally committed to Maryland. Some highlights:

Testudo Times wonders if these are Maryland's new football uniforms.

ESPN's Scott Van Pelt continues to rail against Maryland's students with an epic rant transcribed by Dan Steinberg at the D.C. Sports Bog.

Down in Chapel Hill, student attendance also has dropped. UNC's response: "Citing chronically low student attendance, the athletic department has reduced the number of student tickets by 34 percent from last year."

sounds like a good get

If he's half as good as Nowitski, the Terps will have a solid player. I just hope he's not another foreign kid that goes the way of Jin Soo Kim/Choi.

Those Uni's are God awful.

Hate to be negative, but this guy looks awful...

Those uniforms are hideous! And why do away with the Terp on the helmet. That is the football logo. Oh wait, we have new management who think they just have to change everything because they can! Just love the arrogance!

U-gly uni's. Definately not a fan of the black helmet. Terps (all sports) are veering away more and more from traditional red and white. I'd prefer seeing more creative designs with the traditional colors.

I do agree with having a new helmet though. Traditionally, the terps switch helmets with head coaches

those are the worst uniforms this side of arena league. just another insult to the paying customer.

Good for UNC to reduce student tickets due to attendance. I'd support MD doing the same if attendance continues to lag, especially for ACC games. The paying customers were there on Wednesday. Very disappointing that the students didn't fill up their part of the stands.

I hate to be negative, but looks like you need to get your vision checked. The kid looks like a potential star.

Posted by: Barno1 | February 25, 2011 2:46 PM | Report abuse

Honestly, I don't think we can tell much about this kid from the videos. Only that he has potential.

Posted by: CYork1 | February 25, 2011 2:56 PM | Report abuse

When you see a 6 ft 9 guy dribbling full speed down the court and then acrobatically crossing over from his right hand to his left around a defender with the dribble and put the ball in the hoop, that is a skill very few men at his height have. That's a skill many NBA guys his size don't have.

Posted by: Barno1 | February 25, 2011 3:06 PM | Report abuse

Barno1, would love for him to be a star, just seems to me like the other kids in the video looked like a B League intramural squad. Not saying he won't be good, clearly he has the size and frame so thats something to build on, but, he just didn't impress me from what I've seen. He's also unranked by every scouting agency. I'm high on the recruiting class, just low on this particular kid is all.

Posted by: Imjustlikemusiq | February 25, 2011 3:09 PM | Report abuse

Maryland's colors are red, white, black and gold - not red, white, black and yellow-orange, which is what these uniforms are. Hate them. Can't be the best we can do!

Posted by: RITerp | February 25, 2011 4:20 PM | Report abuse

Again, I hope the kid is a stud, just looks like he is not that explosive. When he jumps/dunks, it looks slower/less explosive than top forwards.

Please be the next Dirk :)

So was Jordan Williams and Terrell Stoglin, but look how they turned out

Posted by: babycas2000 | February 25, 2011 4:43 PM | Report abuse

babycas2000, not to burst your bubble, hope you are right, but here are some other names to remember:

Braxton Dupree 4 star
Jerome Burney 3 star
Shane Clark 4 star
James Padgett 3 star
Ashton Prankey 3 star
Berend Weijs NR

This is just in the past 5 years, these are some of GARY's guys/hidden gems that we where all hoping would be the next MD star/underneth presence.

Maybe now you see why some of us MD fans are not haters, just causiously frustrated/optimistic

1. The uniforms look like something that Army would wear.

2. If students don't want to go to see games anymore, I say it's fine to put the rest of the tickets on sale to the general public.

3. Breunig could be a real find. (He reminds me of Chuck Shultz, only with a 40' vertical leap.) Along with Faust and Gibbs, I like the new recruiting class.

You can't tell much from highlight film, but three things stuck out IMO:

1) He created his own shot
2) he's got a very nice spot-up jumper from outside
3) he finishes well against kids of comparable size

What we didn't see yet: real defense. That'll be a Gary Williams must.

As far as him not being rated, that's probably why the Terps were able to snag him.

A developmental type, but isn't that the Gary Williams type?

I never thought there could be an uglier uniform than the ones that Vanderlinden had ...but I was wrong.....GROSS.....they look like some cheesy Pop Warner leftovers

Awful?????? WTF...he made 100% of his shots!

Posted by: TerpfanMA | February 25, 2011 7:23 PM | Report abuse

Echoing most of the others, these uniforms are embarrasingly ugly. Seriously, what's with the black and yellow fascination? I don't want to be known as the Oregon of the East. Oregon sucks! So the kids can't ride scooters or doo rags, but they get to design this trash!

Where money should be spent. I know we're not Michigan, but if you want to grow and look attractive to another conference:

BMore Sun - AP obtained Greg Mattison's two-year contract Thursday through a FOIA request. He gets $750,000 annually with a chance to earn $900,000. Base salary is $250,000; he'll make $500,000 in additional compensation and is eligible for a bonus of up to $150,000 if the Wolverines are Big Ten champions.
OC Al Borges will make $350,000 a year, receivers coach Jeff Hecklinski will get paid $225,000 and the other assistants will make $200,000.

Also BMore Sun: Oakland Mills Scorpions BB coach Jon Browne said in a text message Thursday night that MD coach Gary Williams visited Oakland Mills for a practice that day. Williams "specifically told me that there is a full scholarship for Greg should he choose to attend Maryland," Browne wrote. Browne wrote that he had "a great conversation" with Williams about Whittington, who is also considering Clemson, DePaul, Georgetown and Texas.

Maryland should cut the number of student tickets as well, or make them pay a bit for them to make them appreciate it a bit more.

Posted by: dc_attorney | February 26, 2011 12:34 PM | Report abuse

If the ungrateful students don't want use up their allotment, start taking away seats. If they can't use up "free" tickets and you don't want to charge them so they don't undervalue tickets then cut the distribution. Supply should exceed the demand.
