Report: Randy Shannon to interview for Maryland DC position this week

By Steve Yanda

Former Miami coach Randy Shannon will interview for the vacant Maryland defensive coordinator position this week, according to ESPN.com's Bruce Feldman.

Shannon, who was fired as Miami's head coach Nov. 28 after compiling a 28-22 record over four seasons, joins former Maryland assistant Kevin Lempa as those in contention to replace Don Brown, who left Friday to become the defensive coordinator at Connecticut.

Feldman reported that Shannon will be in town to interview with Maryland coach Randy Edsall on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

Shannon served as Miami's defensive coordinator from 2001-06 before taking over as the program's head coach. During his years running the Hurricanes' defense, Miami ranked lower than No. 7 in the nation once in total yards allowed per game.

The Hurricanes paid Shannon a buyout of roughly $1.5 million upon firing him, according to the Miami Herald.

Would love the meshing of The U and the Terps.

This wouldn't bee too bad.

Terps are obviously headed in the right direction--especially if something like this happens.

Make this happen.

As a friend of mine emailed me about this earlier today, getting Randy Shannon would be an upgrade over Don Brown in all respects; thus he fully expects Lempa to be named DC.

I think that's a spot on analysis.

The report of Randy Shannon interviewing for DC job is why all Terps fans should all calm down, and let this play out.Shannon would be a clear upgrade over Brown (no disrespect to coach Brown).especially since Brown recruited the state of Florida. I think Shannon would do OK recruiting in Florida. I'm just saying...

Shannon is an upgrade over Don Brown in so many ways. He knows defense very well.

He's a younger, more enthusiastic recruiter and would give us a better presence in talent rich Florida.

I like it alot!

This would be a great move.. Talking to 'the U' fans down there in Nov. for the game, they all loved him as a Def.Cor. and recruiter, but hated him as a Head Coach..'GIT-R-DONE' !!!!!!!

Posted by: frostanna | February 8, 2011 7:13 AM | Report abuse

So he's going to go from a $1.5 mil head-coaching job at UM to a 250k (D. Brown's salary) DC job at UMD. Color me skeptical.

Posted by: fushezzi | February 8, 2011 7:59 AM | Report abuse

We need this more for recruiting purposes in Florida.

Posted by: DiehardTerp | February 8, 2011 8:59 AM | Report abuse

Hey Edsall and Anderson..Do not let this guy get away...Yiu want to recover and fill seats to pay top guys..he is the one.Look at his record as a dc at the U

Posted by: carolina1 | February 8, 2011 9:16 AM | Report abuse

What baffles me is the fact that Lempa is even being considered for the position...So you would consider promoting an unproven for someone that has a "Great" track record at the position?!? If Maryland doesn't get Shannon, I would be baffled...The whole Leach thing, I can understand, but having a coach of Shannon's caliber slip through the cracks would be a monumental blow to the "still growing" Edsall regime

Posted by: babycas2000 | February 8, 2011 9:21 AM | Report abuse

If it's being made public that Shannon is interviewing for the job, then he's a lock NOT to get it. Let's not forget what this administration did with Leache after all that posturing around the Military Bowl. I think Shannon is probably a good choice, and would certainly take some sting off Don Brown making a lateral, or to some a downward, move, but let's face it. This athletic department is no longer about making the good decision, it's about making the stupid one.

Posted by: Russtinator | February 8, 2011 9:27 AM | Report abuse

Shannon would be an awesome choice IF he doesn't require too much money.

Posted by: shanks1 | February 8, 2011 10:32 AM | Report abuse

In my household, with my wife and my son both Canes, this would really be sweet. Shannon had lots of issues as a head coach, but he is a great defensive coach and will clearly have a positive impact on recruiting. My guess is he really wants another crack at an HC job and he will probably get it. But making another impact as a DC would be a good step in that direction and that is not a money issue. One caveat... can't expect him to be here more than a year or two.

More than likely the way head coaching contracts are now written he will still be getting those checks from Miami unless he signs a contract for an equal or higher amount elsewhere...at least for the duration of his contract. Remember, he was fired...he didn't quit.

This would be a very smart move on Maryland's part, Shannon would have an inside track on recruiting in Florida. Randy Shannon is quite capable and he ran very solid program at the U.

Posted by: dargregmag | February 8, 2011 11:17 AM | Report abuse

Shannons' buyout was a one-time, approx 1.5 mil buyout.

Which is perfect, since the departed Don Brown was responsible for recruiting Florida. Just another reason why this deal WON'T get done.

Posted by: Russtinator | February 8, 2011 11:37 AM | Report abuse

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, a thousand times, yes. Randy Shannon was a pretty fair DC, and also an excellent recruiter. Particularly in Florida.

I liked Don Brown, but this is - should be, rather - an upgrade. Hope this works. GO TERPS!!!

I would love to get Shannon, only problem is he would only be here a year or two at most. He may not have done well enough to make them happy at the U, but he is too good of a coach not to get a new head coaching job somewhere.

Posted by: soriphius | February 8, 2011 12:04 PM | Report abuse

I'd be a little worried about 1) cost, and 2) how long he would stay.

Depends on if he still wants to be a head coach.

NO NONONONONO NNNNN OOOOO
Guy was poison @ the U. Bad karma. Not a good guy. Devisive. NONONO

Posted by: bigE2 | February 8, 2011 1:58 PM | Report abuse

Hire him for recruiting purposes. his defensive record is unquestioned too. he was fired for the same reason the Fridge was fired. The team was not putting butts in the seats. Yet, the guy inherited a team and progrma out of control. he cleaned it up, got some recruits and bam they dumped him for the coach from Temple who finally got Temple to a winning season. If Edsall can work with him, HIre him immediately.

If we want to go from Good to Great, time to pony up and pay the big bucks!

Same difference...he's getting $1.5 million this year so accepting a $250K job isn't a big deal.

Posted by: Barno1 | February 8, 2011 5:44 PM | Report abuse

If KA is serious about going to the next level, he needs to pony up and hire Shannon. Top level D coach. Who cares if he leaves in 2 years? This would be HUGE now.

The RB coach hire seem like a good move, but I'm curious - why did Clemson fire him? Is there a skeleton?

Posted by: srcog | February 8, 2011 10:46 PM | Report abuse

srcog - No skeleton to my knowledge... just not a very good RB coach. Evidently he was a very good special teams coach but the running game at Clemson has kinda dropped off in production under him since he took them over. Was not much of a recruiter for them either. They fired their Offensive Coordinator too though I think, so it may have been a cleaning house type move.

I think Edsall could have done much better, but we will see. He better hit a home run with the defensive coordinator hire, because so far his coaching hires have looked average at best.

Posted by: soriphius | February 9, 2011 2:40 AM | Report abuse

why wasn't shannon hired at ucla? heard he interviewed there. makes you wonder...

Posted by: slick3 | February 9, 2011 4:13 AM | Report abuse

This seems like a no-brainer given his record as a DC at Miami before becoming HC. But having him come in for say two years I think is an insufficient amount of time for any system to get established, put in place and become effective. How do you lock a guy in his situation in for at least three years? Coaching stability will be a big part of any UMD resurgence.

Posted by: TerpInTime | February 9, 2011 9:22 AM | Report abuse

Why won't they interview Larry Johnson Sr? He wants a promotion and he would be a great fit. The guy recruits Maryland like crazy and he is also a great coach.

Hate to see Brown go, but Shannon would be an upgrade.

Posted by: steven09 | February 9, 2011 11:17 AM | Report abuse

Be careful what you wish for. I am a UM diehard and he is a horrible coach. He doesn't talk to players, the media, and has a terrible time communicating. Good luck to you guys if he is hired. You'll need it.
