Talkin' Terps: Edsall's effect on attendance

By Matt Bonesteel

Good afternoon.

Today I'm shamelessly poaching from the D.C. Sports Bog, which this morning looked at Maryland's marketing efforts that feature Danny O'Brien prominently, and Randy Edsall not-so-prominently.

On that post, uber-commenter Barno1 had this to say:

"Edsall will not put a single extra butt in the seats that wouldn't have been there as well with Friedgen at the helm."

Do you agree with that statement? Will you be going to more games next season?

Here's my full comment...

Attendance will improve this year because:

1) 2010's 9-win season

2) A rising sophomore QB who was just named 1st team freshman All American

3) A more appealing home schedule

4) Reduced ticket prices

5) A (hopefully) better economy

*Edsall will not put a single extra butt in the seats that wouldn't have been there as well with Friedgen at the helm. So when attendance rises, and you see Kevin Anderson patting himself on the back, just know that he is full of ****.

Posted by: Barno1 | February 9, 2011 12:17 PM | Report abuse

I'm a committed fan and will continue to attend all home games--even if Bonesteel were the head coach.

Bottom line: Get Shannon on board and the Terps have the OC/DC mix they've sorely missed since Blackney/Taaffe. It would position Edsall as a spokesperson, which he excels at...

Posted by: MerlinTerps | February 9, 2011 12:21 PM | Report abuse

This seems to be the WaPo strategy...instead of doing some actual reporting about UMD athletics (Parker, FB and BB recruiting: See the Baltimore Sun), we get meaningless polls and posts about nonsensical statements that nobody can prove or disprove....just a lame attempt to fill space by writers who are out of ideas....

Honestly? So what....40 people will be on here saying that Edsall will and 50 will say he wont sell extra tix.....who cares?

If you want to do some work:

1) Why isnt Parker getting minutes?
2) what really happened with Leach?
3) Why is Brown really leaving?
4) Who are the new FB recruits that Edsall needs to focus on?
5) Who ponied up the $2M to fire Fridge
6) Is KA satisfied with events
7) Why is the AD mailbox shut down
8) What happened at the Town Hall events

Or you could create another poll about whether Edsall will change the color of the helmets next year

WaPo has become Balt Sun Lite

Give me a break! Barno1 is the uber Fridge apologist! Who was going to boycott the Terps when Fridge got the ax? Who said Fridge had lost over 100 pounds, video of the Military Bowl not withstanding? Do you guys ever consider the source?

Is this blog about Barno1 or the Terps, or is it becoming Barno's blog about the Terps?

Posted by: RITerp | February 9, 2011 12:25 PM | Report abuse

No doubt attendance will be higher. Better home schedule and Terps coming off a 9 win season. Will Byrd be packed every game? No chance. I'll be there no matter what but I might conduct a Parking Lot Protest the first game over the way Fridge was treated (instead of attending the game, I will tailgate for an additional 4 hours). Good to great, baby!

Posted by: aviscardo | February 9, 2011 12:25 PM | Report abuse

agree with Barno. I'm there to see Danny. But lose a early easy one, and watch numbers drop. And helmets will be Boomer-era red.

Posted by: Effyeahterps | February 9, 2011 12:30 PM | Report abuse

I think it has less to do with the Coach and more to do with the schedule.

You want to charge me top dollar and put me on the 15 yd line 15-20 rows back in the upper deck then at least let me see a decent game.

Plus, you never know when the darn game is...

I am not buying season tickets for games that I don't when the kickoff is, unless it is a really big game... and there is only a couple of them.

You package mediocre (or less) games with decent games and charge for them like they are all big games.

That might have something to do with the problem.

2nd time this week the Blog has had to turn to Barno1 for analysis?

It's not even 2012 yet, what in the world is going on?

As for the comment itself, just like with any other team, winning brings fans in. Pretty simple really.

Also, going into last season, in case people forget, the Terps were coming off of a 2-10 season, and many people questioned if losing to Navy would get Fridge fired....

Short memories around here, short memories...

Side not, many readers of Terp Insider (especially Barno) may get a kick out of this.

Looks like that over on Natinals Journal, I've pushed someone else to the brink of insanity and forced some other bozo to create a fake p00py_mcp00p where the fake poster added an extra 'underscore' between p00py and mcp00p in an elaborate attempt to pull the wool over the eyes of some of the posters over there.

What a ruse. hahahahahahhaahhahaha

barno1 is a moron. this has been pretty well established

Posted by: slick3 | February 9, 2011 1:00 PM | Report abuse

I plan on going. As I've stated before I am for all things MD except for Mens BB for obvious reasons. As much as you guys WHINE about your FB situation, please take a moment to compare it to my alma mater's.

No, I don't think for a second its getting better, and if they do achieve real success, I think that a large amount of credit will be heaped on RF. The man may have been obese, but he was likable and a class act, and a guy that the other long term ACC schools rooted for. One of the reasons we don't hat MD is that you beat real evil (like the Tar Heels) consistently, denied Philip Rivers nothing more meaningful than his draft status, and finally edged out FLST for the ACC crown.

But I won't sit in the monstrosity of the upper deck, I won't buy the season ticket plan, and I won't wear blue so I can blend in with the rest of you (you'll just think I graduated from the honors program).

I do like that they are quoting Barno, but am waiting for them to show some balls and quote HGR.

btw - I saw the threat of meeting at the seats to settle like men. Barno - hgr has informed me that you would squish me like a zit and possibly kill me if JPFTerp is not around to stop you and that it is not in my best interests to goad you like cm88. That said, cm88 has the same opinion today of GW that I had towards RF last season when the team went 2-10 and I did have season tickets.

What happened to RF was wrong, no doubt. hgr thinks that there are potential karmic ramifications that can serve to haunt the program - like the curse of the Vespa - but he dropped some bananas off at his Hindu temple as an offering to his many gods or maybe one in particular so the team should be ok.

The schedule is better for next year. Hope to see them in the BCS.

And I believe they quote Barno because he provides some good quotes and is a home who writes pretty much daily. And they know quoting him will get a few of you guys to post some venom towards him.

In terms of BB, good luck, we'll see you at the ACCT, hopefully as one of the top seeds so that all the fellas from MD/DC can hang together for a day before playing. And then beat you again in the ACCTCG.

Have a great day!

winning does not guarantee attendance. this past season proves that. why else are we having this conversation?

That's pretty funny Poop. Not that it matters but the fake Poopy really wasn't me. Was/Is the OG_Barno you?

As for them quoting me...i think they're just doing it bc I have a name they can print. They're never going to quote Hugh G Rection or Poopy_McPoop or Mr. Scrotums...unfortunately. But that would be hilarious if they did.

If they only knew what barno really meant.

Early on fans will show up because of last season and wanting to see/support the new guy.

But as Anderson's disaster takes hold (sorry but new OC/DC means new systems which means adjustment period) attendence will decline.

Barno, no I never was or have been OG_Barno.

now Ralph_Melish may be a different story but that was before I knew how to chang IP addy's and reclaim P00PY.

Still laugh at the poster who thought my actual name was Ralph Melish. Hahahahahaha

Edsall will not sell a single ticket that would not have been purchased if Fridge had remained the coach. He doesn't bring a single marketable quality that can be used to sell tickets, so the department is stuck with selling last year's success and an improved home schedule, which will sell more tickets than last year, but no more than if Donald Duck was hired as the head coach.

Speaking of short memories. How about the attendance at that FSU game? When the team was winning and had a chance to win twice and get in the Orange Bowl?

The wins thing is true. Ralph has already proven that winning 30 games in 3 years puts butts in seats. How many of the attendance records in Byrd were during his tenure? 7 out of the top 10, 15 out of the top 20, 20 out of the top 25, if this link is right.

Barno cant even answer a question regarding on the missing piece blog, because he keeps getting buried in his weak points, on how much more time he thinks Gary should get if he keeps taking us to NIT's, and now he is over here acting like he is an expert on Football. I thought he was going to boycott the team???? Way to stick to your convictions Barno, a true MD sports expert/child :)

I now see why everyone hates you on these boards and laughs at you, you must really like all the negative attention behind your computer. haha

Posted by: cm88 | February 9, 2011 2:44 PM | Report abuse

I haven't answered the question because the question itself is absolutely retarded. Gary Williams is the reigning ACC Coach of the Year, has taken Maryland to 14 NCAA tourneys, 7 Sweet 16s, won 4 ACC championships, 2 final fours, and a national championship ...how much more time should he get? Um, until he decides he wants to retire. And he has the backing of the boosters, so there isn't a single thing you can do about it Certified Moron88. Deal with it.

Posted by: Barno1 | February 9, 2011 2:53 PM | Report abuse

Barno hit the nail on the head with that last comment. There's zero CM88 can do to change the fact that Gary Williams is going to be Maryland's head bball coach as long as he wants to be, so why keep wasting so much of your time and energy fighting this on a blog? Time for CM88 to get a life.

Posted by: terp4lifer | February 9, 2011 2:58 PM | Report abuse

Just like Fridge didnt have to worry :)

Fans like you 2 make me laugh, Gary has a life pass for something he accomplished 8 years ago, and he is reigning COY when he lost in the first round of the ACC and 2nd round of the NCAA and couldnt win before the reg season, wow great job!!!!

Again, guess Joe Gibbs should have had a lifelong pass according to your logic, eventhough he did a bad job when he came back?

Sorry kids, MD basketball is bigger than gary, but you dont get that. I guess you will have a reason to celebrate if we sneak into the NCAAs and lose early or an excuse when we go to the NIT AGAIN.

Congrats on your low expectations, hope it doesnt translate into your life.

Go MD!!!

Boosters, please wake up and get rid of Gary, we are on a downward path and its Garys team/fault!

Posted by: cm88 | February 9, 2011 3:09 PM | Report abuse

Didnt Fridge win COY? I guess individual awards arent as important as the team actually succeeding to a level "real" fans expect/want. If youre goals for success are NIT's and squeeking into NCAA's, congrats you have your coach, go GARY!!!

If you want a Top 10-20 program every year, coast into the NCAA's and compete for NCAA and ACC titles, and get top recruits, then we need a new coach.

Thats my point :)

The only post I bothered to read on this thread was TerfanMA's. He said everything that needed to be said. One way to drive many of us away is for the writers to keep giving credibility to Barno's posts. He doesn't have a clue about this. But KA fired a coach and that is a crime against humanity.

If Bonesteel keeps using Barno's's' posts for his blog topics, shouldn't he give Barno a cut of his paycheck.

But given his blog work to date he probably is paid with bags of salt.

Good point Restonhoops, I can admit that I dont even care or watch MD football because the product has sucked for years, when Fridge came in, I started watching when we had that great year, but its dropped off so I dont watch anymore.

Thats why I am concerned about the MD Basketball team, I personally know of several longtime ticket holders that cancelled because the cost didnt match up to the quality of team we fielded, plus my company that is run by MD grads, just cancelled the suite we had, same reason. That is not a good sign for the Basketball program.

Just think, years ago, Redskins season tickets where untouchable i.e. 20-30 year waiting list. Now they are pretty easy to get...too many years of a bad quality product and too expensive. Hope Gary doesnt make this the next Snyder debotchery.

Years ago, I would never miss a Terps game on tv or live, now I actually dont care that I missed the Wake game or some other ACC games. Its a non-meaningful game...didnt help or hurt our causes. Unfortunately, the ACC product is becoming a lesser tier, where we used to be the top league with the top players/product. Hope MD and ACC can get it turned back around.

Edsall being the coach means nothing.. It'll take a year for Terps fans to judge.. As a season ticket, my crew will be there, but I bet there's less than 35,000 for the opener vs. Towson.. Of course excuses will be made, holiday weekend, etc...Perhaps we need to bring back Susan Anton and the 'Get Passionate' about Maryland football slogan, if my memory is correct from Bobby Ross'first year...

If the change of Towson and Miami is true, then Edsall shouldn't hire Shannon as DC, which is what we all want.. The reason- if Shannon is the DC, and Terps play Miami in the first game, then Edsall's first game as coach at Maryland is the second story line of the game.. The first would be Shannon going against his old 'U'... DUMB, DUMB, DUMB.. A move Yow would make for the $$$, Anderson might do it just because he is DUMB !!!

Posted by: frostanna | February 9, 2011 5:49 PM | Report abuse

Sorry...if it is Miami and we end up with Shannon...I see zero downside from a PR perspective....the only effect on the hype will be positive

Once the game starts, it will be up to Edsall and the Terps to deliver....If we win, it will have a significantly bigger impact on the season than an opening win against Towson

IF we get Shannon and IF the option exists to play Miami opening day, DO IT

Posted by: TerpfanMA | February 9, 2011 6:49 PM | Report abuse

No, you don't do it. You use your comparative advantage and play the team from Sunny South Florida at the coldest possible time, like the last home game. Miami will be up against it next year, and their fans don't travel well in cold weather (or at all for that matter, even at home, when they are not good). Love to watch them shiver like the Wolfpack dolts.

Agree with Merlin, Edsall is turning into a good front man and the new "Behind the Scenes" video plays well. Hire the ShanMan!

Maybe BB recruiting help from Deutschland next year according to BMore Sun. I'm confused. Is it UM or the UN? Hey, it's working for the ladies.

Re: Ralph Melish/Hans Moleman

A Star is Burns, in which Moleman enters "Man Getting Hit By Football, is one of my favorite episodes. The whole Barney Gumble documentary cracks me up. From him mistaking the girl scout meeting for an AA meeting and lecturing Lisa to him winning the Film Festival and winning a lifetime supply of Duff - "Just hook it to my veins!!!" - the episode is pure brilliance.

In an effort to reimmurse (sp) myself into an old favorite TV show, I'm debating whether to watch two episodes of the Simpsons per day or one episode of The Wire. To be honest, I'm 50/50.

Don't cry for me....I'm already dead

Posted by: fushezzi | February 9, 2011 10:05 PM | Report abuse

cm88:

People like you must not have paid attention to the whole Ralph-Leach-Edsall fiasco (throw in Brown's departure for kicks). To recap, here's what we know about the state of Maryland athletics:

We have an AD who was completely emasculated while a national audience watched. We have a board of regents and chancellor who think it's perpetually 1986 and Len Bias just died. They furthermore think Bob Wade is still arranging free rides to and from school for Rudy Archer, and they are deathly afraid the NCAA is going to put us on probation for it. Our football program gets outspent by nearly $9M a year by schools like VT, and our basketball program annually gets outspent by $1M by schools like Villanova.

So who in their right mind would want to replace Gary Williams? Right now, Maryland is the worst HC job for football or basketball in the ACC. We're like one of Saddam Hussein's palaces: we look good from the outside but the inside needs a lot of work.

You're in utter denial if you think a new coach will get any different results than Gary. I'm not a big fan of his and the data clearly shows a drop off in his winning over the last 8 years, but he's the best Maryland can do. Look at how Anderson bungled the football hiring process. Do you think he'll do better landing a big time hoops coach? You live in a land of leprechauns and unicorns if you haven't realized we're lucky that Gary still wants the Maryland job. He could do a lot better.

-->That's part of the problem with Terps season tickets is that this isn't the SEC or Big 10. Not really "must see" games especially without VTech or FSU.

Not sure if the Terps are doing this (or plan on it) but I would have two packages of four and three games respectively. That way it has less of a time committment. I would also give these partial STH, the option of buying additional tickets at a lesser cost(but more than full STH price).

I think the ACC scheduling is a PITA, but can't fault them for caring more about $$$ than the convience of the fans.

The Terps will never be as popular as the Skins or Ravens, short of being in a national championship(and even then) and it's just one of many diversions in the DC/Baltimore area on the weekends. With the schedule we have and the general lack of travel that ACC squads do(not a whole lot of NC State fans to see their team play for the divison controlling their own destiny). Not to mention the ACC is one of the easier traveling conferences. Miami to Boston and headquarted in NC (where four of the teams are).

I'm more likely to support the Terps and attend games know cuz I know the team has a solid future ahead of it. With Ralph, whether it was one or two more lame duck years, all I could see was attrition--lower and lower levels of recruiting, an inability to attract quality new coaches long-term, and too much program uncertainty in general. Thanks to the MD AD, the program is on a much more secure footing now, long term.

Good luck to Ralph! If a program hires him, in whatever capacity, they will be rewarded.

Posted by: EdDC | February 10, 2011 8:50 AM | Report abuse

Continuing to quote Barno only points to the lackluster quality of this message board.

There is a significant portion of the fan base (myself included) that believed that the program had bottomed out with Ralph. And while I'm far from enamored of the ham-handed way Anderson handled the situation, this extra butt will be in the seats next year. Why? Because there's a future now. That's the difference from last year.

A point on Gary - the guy is 66 and brought the program back from as-close-to-the-death penalty as you can get. If he were 50 I might be agitating a little more for a change. But Gary's probably got 5 years left max - he's earned those 5 years and will leave the program on a solid footing.

Let's all remember who the real villain here is - YOW. From diluting the athletic department (27 sports??) because her bonuses were tied to Director's Cup finishes to her open feud with Gary, she held back football and basketball for the last 10 years. As I said, Anderson isn't a gem so far, but he also isn't Yow. Let's see where we are a couple years from now - I'm betting we'll be on an upward swing.

AOL Article about North Carolina - Md Talk Yet explanations aren’t that simple, either. The day before Drew left North Carolina last week, Maryland followers engaged in another debate over Gary Williams and what has happened since the 2002 title. Naturally, it followed a lopsided loss to Duke, and it again focused on whether Williams was still good enough of a recruiter to compete.

Left out of the argument was that the two classes following that championship were as full of highly-touted prospects as Maryland had attracted in years — far more lauded than the ones that had formed the heart of the back-to-back Final Four teams, like Juan Dixon, Lonny Baxter and Steve Blake. But those two post-banner classes (remember Travis Garrison? Mike Jones? Chris McCray, ruled academically ineligible midway through his senior year?) underachieved tremendously — or were rated too high in the first place — and instead made up the core of the teams that missed the tournament three times from 2005 to ’08.

"Good luck to Ralph! If a program hires him, in whatever capacity, they will be rewarded.

-->So here's my question to you, MD gets bounced before the Sweet 16(which has happened every year for the last seven or so years) and KA does decides to make a change in the basketball program, do you think Gary could get another Head Coaching job?

caphillterp,
Yow isn't nearly as bad as people try to make her out to be. Let's see returning the football program to respectability, the men's championship, a great hire in Frese leading to the women's title, and all those other "Olympic" sport national champs.

She had a big ego, so did Gary, so did Ralph, and I think Randy does as well. I think KA actually doesn't, just his moves come across that way.

Thanks for the AOL article. It continues:

"Roughly the same fate befell Syracuse after 2003 (four years without an NCAA tourney win, including two times in the NIT), Connecticut after 2004 (a second-round loss, the upset by George Mason, a first-round loss, an NIT trip in the next four years), even Florida after repeating in 2006 and '07 (NIT the next two seasons, one-and-done in the NCAAs last year).

It also happens to programs that reach that final weekend regularly: they can fall hard and fast. UCLA (three straight Final Fours from '06-08, missed the Madness last year and in trouble this year) and Michigan State (made the last two Final Fours, now on verge of missing NCAAs), step forward and be counted. In Westwood, everybody went pro early; in East Lansing, Tom Izzo wishes his players had.

In short: fans' demands notwithstanding, it's no accident that only Florida has gone back-to-back since 1992 -- and that the last program to do it before those Duke teams was UCLA in the '70s, with Wooden and Walton."

One gets the feeling that if CM88 was a Syracuse fan, he'd have demanded Jim Boeheim be fired after no NCAA wins in 4 years (something Gary has never done during his tenure at MD). I can also see CM88 demanding Jim Calhoun be fired for his post championship run at UConn. Same goes for Florida and Donovan. Thing is CM88 is the very worst kind of fan. Says he doesn't care about MD football because we "stink". Says he only goes to MD games when they play Duke. Says he didn't support MD for years in person because they are "hard to watch."
Guy really needs to find something else to do with his time other than pretending to be a fan of sports teams.
