Adams Morgan: Party zone becomes construction zone

Popular shopping and dining spot Adams Morgan is about to become a construction zone, Dr. Gridlock reports. According to District Department of Transportation plans, the neighborhood is about to undergo street construction along 18th street from Florida Ave. to Columbia Road, a vibrant stretch filled with restaurants and bars.

The District plans to reconstruct the road, widen the sidewalks, improve the water main and more in the Adams Morgan Streetscape project, which is slated for completion in May 2012. The construction will leave one lane open in each direction for traffic, and DDOT has stressed that they want to leave Adams Morgan "open for business" during the work.

The construction hours will take place between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and the work will be completed in phases to minimize disruption. DDOT has hired a community liaison, Thomas Pipkin, to address public concerns. He can be reached by e-mail at or by phone at 202-642-6774.

I'm torn I welcome the larger sidewalks, but at the cost of the back in parking spaces which adds more parking than the parallel parking side of the street. Who will benefit more?

The back-in parking spaces on 18th Street take up too much of the streetscape, leaving too little sidewalk space for pedestrians. Adams Morgan will be much better off with wider sidewalks and a narrower street. There are so many better ways to get to, from and around Adams Morgan that do not involve a car -- multiple Metro bus routes (42, 90s, L2), the Circulator bus, a short walk from the Woodley Park Metro station, Capital Bikeshare or one's own bike. I look forward to a more walking friendly Adams Morgan when this project is completed.

The fewer taxpayer-subsidized parking spots, anywhere, if always a good thing.

Car drivers tend to be ignorant and overweight.

I'm very happy about the reduction of parking and increase in sidewalks. Just take the bus to Adams Morgan, it's not like you'll be in driving condition when you're ready to go home.

reducing parking in adams morgan -- which is NOT easily accessible through public transportation -- is ridiculous. DC is not new york and this "more walking, less driving" is impractical and nonsensical, unless it's another way for the district to get more revenue by ticketing illegally-parked cars. b/c people will definitely still drive there, still park somewhere they shouldn't if there are no parking spaces nearby, and still avoid inconvenient bus routes and metrorail. what about people from the suburbs? are they supposed to take buses and/or the metro from their homes to adams morgan? ridiculously long stretch of time just for a bit o' fun. and if the suburbanites stay home, the fortunes of adams morgan business owners will be compromised. who wants that?!

AZHW, not only is the Woodley Park/Adams Morgan Metro station an only 10-minute walk away, but the Columbia Heights station is a 15-minute walk. Adding to that, the Circulator now travels THROUGH Adams Morgan from Woodley Park Metro to Columbia Heights Metro, numerous buses travel on 18th St and Columbia Rd, and taxis are abundant. The reason that AM is so popular is because it IS so accessible by public transit. So relax, and take the bus. Suburbanites who drive aren't keeping AM in business any more than you are, especially since the number of available parking spots compared to the number of party-goers is thankfully so low to begin with.

Earth to DDOT, we have a 600 million dollar deficit. NEW construction projects are fiscally irresponsible using local funding.

If you decide to live in a suburb where you're shackled to your car, that's your problem. The rest of us shouldn't suffer for it.

Adams Morgan is a city neighborhood. It's used by way more pedestrians than drivers. And the sidewalks are way too narrow, to the point that it's impossible to walk during the busiest times on weekend nights. Reclaiming some of that extra parking is a no-brainer.

Other city neighborhoods have parallel parking and do just fine. If you're so determined to bring your car (and probably drive drunk), pay for a spot in a private lot.

Possibly you are confusing the capital and operating budgets? This is a capital project and the deficit is in the operating budget.
