Meanwhile, I attended Monday night's Salome and it was one of the better nights at WNO, thanks to the world-class singing of Doris Soffel (who actually took a two minutes or so to warm up) and the conducting of Philippe Auguin, who did however tend to cover the singers. But the orchestra sounded so much more precise under him that I have high hopes for the future; there certainly is potential to grow. Good to see concertmaster Oleg Rylatko back and, as I said, I also hope Auguin will conduct the NSO.

Debbie Voigt gave a valiant performance but she wasn't quite there. She was at times overpowered, the voice doesn't quite capture the whole range of colors, and she could have used better direction. I am aware that she did better elsewhere in the role, and it was still a more than honorable reading, and I am not saying to damn with faint praise.

Speaking of direction, are there any other directors than Zambello working? She seems to be everywhere, and while her best work can be great, this Salome was just average storytelling. And I was annoyed that she treated us with noise before staring the very first note of the opera. This completely changed the mood and frankly, annoyed me. Trust the music for God's sake!!!!

When Daniel Sumegi was in the pit, I though his voice was coarse, only to realize it was (badly) amplified. The baritone does not have the most beautiful tone, but he compensated with power and charisma. If it was a somewhat crude Jokanaan, is Jokanaan supposed to be refined and sophisticated? Berkeley-Steele was also a valiant Herod, and Sean Panikkar was a good Narraboth.

P.S. Are we going to discuss Met's Boris Godunov, or should I post my impressions?
