Remembering Gorecki in NoVa
In today's Washington Post: Henryk Gorecki, the avant-garde Polish composer whose third symphony became a runaway best-seller in the 1990s, dies at 76, by Matt Schudel.
In 1981, Gorecki (pronounced "go-RETZ-kee") wrote a "Miserere" in support of Solidarnosc. The work will be featured on a free Veteran's Day concert tonight jointly presented by the Master Singers of Virginia, the National Men's Chorus, and the choir of Broad Run High School in Ashburn, Virginia. The concert -- which also includes some spirituals and American folk songs -- starts at 7:30 p.m. at Our Savior's Way Lutheran Church in Ashburn, VA (northwest of Dulles Airport).
