April 22: Va. Tech Tragedy and AG Gonzales in the Spotlight

Six days after the deadliest shooting spree by a lone gunman in American history, the Sunday news shows will feature guests who can provide authoritative information about the killings at Virginia Tech and broader commentary about what the tragedy means for American society and politics.

The talk shows will also feature commentary on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales's appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday.

NBC's "Meet the Press" has Michael Leavitt, the secretary of health and human services, and Margaret Spellings, the secretary of education, as well as two members of the commission created by Virginia Gov. Tom Kaine to review the Virginia Tech shootings -- Col. Gerald Massengill, the retired Virginia state police superintendent, and former Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge, also the first secretary of homeland security.

"Fox News Sunday" hosts Virginia Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling (R) and Stephen Trachtenberg, the president of George Washington University. The show will also feature Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.), the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, and Sen. Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), a Judiciary Committee member who has been leading the Democratic probe into Gonzales.

CBS "Face the Nation" talks to Jim Brady and his wife Sarah, who have led a campaign for increased gun control measures ever since an assasination attempt on President Ronald Reagan in 1981 left Brady, then a top aide, disabled. It will also confer with Sen. Patrick Leahy(D-Va.), chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

CNN's "Late Edition" will have Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell (R) and a 2008 presidential contender, Republican Sen. Sam Brownback (Kans.).

And ABC's "This Week" has Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), a 2008 contender, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), a possible presidential candidate.

I think that The Presidents stabornness is ruining his credability. It began with Renald Ronforld, seconded by Herial Myers, the guy that he sent to the united nations on recess appointment and now this AG situation. It seems that a alot people that work for this adminitration have a credibility problem. Look at Paul Wolfworth
at the world Bank ruining the credibility of that institution.

With all due respect, we've had gun ownership in this country since it's inception and never experienced this sort of violence. The blame, I think, rests with violent video games and newspapers and television that inundate us with stories of the killers, essentially making the killers heroes. The experts tell us this all the time. In the rest of the civilized world, reporting extreme acts of violence, stories banned under various secrets acts, is forbidden. Likewise, violent video games and books and movies are banned. And, they preventatively lock up potentially violent people without a trial. We should join the rest of the civilized world and have curbs on the press, forbid certain types of television reporting, and ban violent games, books, shows, and movies. We must do these things to preserve our right to security, our freedom from fear.

....Doesn't sound like such a good idea? Unconstitutional? A violation of the 1st, 4th, and 5th Amendments of the Constiution? Well, that is what the rest of the "civilized world" does. Modify or re-interrupt the 2nd Amendment and you will be opening a Pandora's box that you will not ever get closed again. Either the Bill Of Rights means something, all of it, or none of it means anything. Someones, like the Brady's or the Post editorial staff, good intentions or not, is as much danger to this country as is Al Qaida or any terrorist organization.
