June 24 Preview: Immigration From All Angles

It will be immigration, immigration, immigration--from all sides--this Sunday.

Campaign 2008 will be put on hold, for a moment. Instead, the focus will be on next week's resurrection of an immigration bill that still faces sharp opposition among Republicans.

ABC "This Week" has Sens. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Jeff Sessions (R-Al.).

"Fox News Sunday" talks with Sens. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.).

CNN "Late Edition" hosts Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.) and Ron Wyden (Oreg.).

NBC "Meet the Press" has Pat Buchanan and Rep. Luis Gutierrez.

And CBS "Face the Nation" has a roundtable with New York City mayor Ed Koch, GOP consultant Ed Rollins, actor Sam Waterston (a spokesman for the bi-partisan Unity08 effort) and Politico's John Harris.

"still faces sharp opposition among Republicans."

Uh huh. Way to go, WaPo. When is your reporting going to acknowledge the fact that NOBODY likes this farce of an immigration bill?

When is this President, Congress, and the Senate going to realize that "We the people of the United States" who pay your salaries Do Not want this immigration bill. To Ted Kennedy, and any other Democrat who tries to put this unlawful bill through? I will vote independent in the next election if this Bill passes. What in the world is wrong with you people? Our Borders and Ports need to be secured and NOW! My God we are doomed if that is not done first and foremost.

Despite the attempts at sham enforcement to strengthen this bad bill, it all comes down to the part that nobody wants and that is the mass legalization of unknown millions of illegal aliens or, in short, ITS THE AMNESTY, STUPID!! No matter what ths President or the Grand Bargainers do to change the lipstick on the pig, we don't want the amnesty. That is the deal breaker. Our President is arrogany and defiant on this issue. That is why 4000 aliens per day are still flooding our Southern Border and why he has the lowest approval rating of any President in modern times. He is still singing kumbaya with Kennedy and La Raza and thumbing his nose at American voters. Hopefully, there will be enough no cloture votes to kill this bill on Tuesday. This President needs a a lesson for this legacy.

The Democrats and RINOs pushing this bill need to learn to count - over-population numbers! They also need to learn the meaning of fairness - for Americans before illegals. Foreign and wealthy empire interests interests should not dictate our immigration laws.

STOP the immigration bill this week.
The President & OUR reps in Washington,DC has tight security. They do not worry about flying commerical, they have secret service for protection etc.
They don't live in neighhoods & take their business to fast food restaurants & business places where no one can speak English.
American people have spoken loud & clear but no one in DC will listen.
I am sick & tired of the party I supported & voted for in past elections.
I am changing my party & will vote for people to represent us that will do something to protect our borders.

Now is the time to legitimatize the cadre of people who support our infrastructure.

Posted by: David Chandler | June 24, 2007 10:16 AM

I have been following this issue throughout the internet, in political web sites and various blogs for the last month and more. The distrust and dislike people across the board have towards this bill is wide and deep--and covers the whole political spectrum. Why do the media continue to characterize this opposition as "right-wing" and "republican" and "nativist" and "stirred up by talk radio?". It is much broader than that. Much. One can only think that the media have their own agenda and are determined to enforce it. And they wonder why public trust in the MSM continues to decline.

This Immigration bill if passed will destroy this Nation. To start it is not about 12 Million the actual numbers with dependents will be closer to 150 millions. You cannot add 150 millions new citizens with an average 6 grade education and in excess of a 50 percent school drop out, the highest illegitimate birth rate of any ethic group, and that refuse to assimilate, that loves Welfare, and has loyally to other Nations without changing this Nation into a facsimile of the Nation they came from. There is a reason that those people have in 100 of years only built a society where Corruption, Crime, Poverty, Misery, and Cruelly reign. If the ones supporting this Amnesty had to live with and work another the Illegal Aliens there would be no supporters of this Amnesty Plot!

Posted by: BL | June 24, 2007 11:15 AM

Anyone concerned about this Nation and their Children and grandchildren future they had better join numberusa.com, fair and other organizations and Phone, send faxes, write, and opposite the biggest Welfare and Crime Bill in this Nations history!

Posted by: BL | June 24, 2007 11:26 AM

The Republicans and Democrats and the out
of touch with reality Washington Post writers need to accept the fact that over
80% of the American people Oppose Illegal
Alien Amensty! And that we want our current
laws enforced,by mass deportation of all
illegal aliens and the arrest, jailing and
extreme stiff fines for all Employers of
Illegals and Their Landlords as well!
And that we want these freeloader illegal
aliens free healthcare, free welfare, and free education totally cut off now!
The voters will throw any Democrat or
Republican Who Votes For lllegal Alien
Amnesty Out Of Office On Election Day!

When did Ed Koch again become mayor New York. I thought Michael Bloomberg just became an independent. I did not realize that he had resigned.

Also, with Sam Waterston on the same program, what does NBC think of him slipping over to a rival network? Is the whole cast of Law & Order going to run for office or agitate for a cause?

Posted by: BURKE | June 24, 2007 12:17 PM

I'm not trying to be sensational, but I truly believe if 12+ million illegal aliens get amnesty, America will be facing a race-based civil war by 2020. 12 million people + relatives + 4.4 kids per couple = 100 million unassimilable "citizens" that do not share our language, history, culture or values. Recipe for disaster.

Posted by: paul | June 24, 2007 1:31 PM

The immigration reform has become a hate issue among the people that oppose it. Where do yu guys get such astronomical numbers, from 12 mil you dont get 150 mil. It is time to understand the pros and cons of this matter, and stop making Lou Dobb's numbers. If you want to believe immigrants are the cancer on your society that's fine, if you dont like them that's fine, but it is not fair to lie about them. They are human beings, they have kids , families same as any American citizen, but the only difference is that in their countries they dont have the opportunity to feed them. What would you do if you dont have food for the ones you love? May be you would go to a place where regardless of being called illegal, regardless of being away from your love ones, regardless of being nobody at least you can provide food and clothes for the ones you love. But if you still think they are stealing somenthing from the American People, think it again because maybe the food that you buy is affordable to your pocket because of them.

Posted by: Robert A. | June 24, 2007 2:49 PM

Stop calling opposition to amnesty "racism".
This is a pitiful red herring argument that seems to be persuasive to hispanics. Instead of making an emotional argument, why not think about the issue.
I am personally against the immigration bill because it allows people who broke US law to become citizens. My second argument against this legislation is that the financial cost of "amnesty" is enormous. Those who support this illogical legislation should be forced to pay for it. I want no part of paying for the cost and I could care less about the "plight" of illegal immigrants making 10 times what they could make in their home country. If we allow 12 million to come in, there are another 12 million plus that are going to follow, and so on. Why have any national borders if we are going to have a policy like this? Stop the absurdity, this bill is trash.

Posted by: Jon Brodziak | June 24, 2007 3:22 PM

Bush has refused to enforce the law against employing illegals, therefore keeping them out, not because of his empathy for Hispanics, but because he is advancing his father's "vision thing" of a "new world order," a world in which the wealthy have the masses at their mercy, a world in which, as I recall Sr saying in the '92 debate: "We want to bring the wages in Mexico up to seven dollars an hour and the wages here down to seven dollars an hour. We want to level the playing field." Now, there's a great American for you. (Could someone get ahold of the clip of him saying that and post it on YouTube?)

How does Jr take his licking (ref. poll numbers) and keep on ticking? From his point of view he has been highly successful. He has seen the man his father has confessed to hating hanged; Uncle Bucky Bush, a charter member of the military industrial complex, et al, have made billions; dad's vision thing has forged full steam ahead.

That the opposition to legalizing the illegals comes only from a few loud right wingers is propaganda. I have voted straight Democrat since 1984. And I too am adamantly opposed to my tax dollars going to take care of the many problems of these opportunistic underachievers who, in inadvertent collusion with the proponents of a new world order, have pushed their way in here and who proudly, boisterously trample across my inheritance.

Because of her stand on this issue, there is no way I will vote for Hillary in 08.

People have confused the symptoms with the illness! What part of "WE have allowed a vast and illicit employment scam to occur that enables employers to dodge employment resposabilities and obligations, in favor of exploiting a workforce that is undercutting and stealing good jobs away from the American Citizens and LEGAL residents" don't they comprende?!!
Legitimize the 12 Million, and the Employers will just need and eventually get, 20 Million MORE!!!

Great news! Congressman John CarterR-Tx, and others have written HR-1940; Birthright Citizenship Act!!!

Some Representatives do represent THIS Country and I hope God Blesses them for it!

Posted by: RAT-The | June 24, 2007 3:43 PM

Stop saying you will pay for illegal immigrants. Do some reserach and see who is really paying for who. They will pay fines, and you will keep benefit from their hard work. I agree with the fact that our borders should be secure, but we need to have a comprenhensive approach to the issue. It is easy to complaint but it's better to resolve.

Posted by: Jim k. | June 24, 2007 3:50 PM

To LINDSAY and any others who share her views:
I sympathize with the situation the poor all around the World have. There are 7 BILLION people on this Planet, and I would guess at least 3-4 BILLION of them would love to be here!
Ain't happening!
When this Country threw open the doors that brought many of us here, it was a Country behind Mexico in wealth and culture. The people that came created, not grabbed or stole their opportunities!
They also created the Towns and Cities and did not just infiltrate and overun them!
I find that the Hispanics are very Political-But, they want to be Political HERE!
Got problemos with life in good ol Mexico?
Fix them there!
Mexico has less than 100 Million, we have 300 Million! We do not need to allow every single hispanic who wants to violate our laws do it! AND, if we are Estupido enough to keep allowing the Hispanics to get their extended Familias in front of the line, we will be getting them all!
This Country is a melting Pot that has simply allowed too many beans, and they are swelling and forcing all the other ingredients out!
Es no bueno!

To Rat- The. Do you think illegal immigrants are only mexicans? I would love to take you in a trip to Latin America. Probably, your view of the world will change, no to mention Africa. I understand that as a citizen of this great country you should protect it against anything that will harm it. But, do you really believe immigrants hurt our society? Even more, do you consider the bill Ammesty? I appreaciate your views in the discussion...Lindsay

As I write this, CNN is covering live demonstrations in LA by supporters of "immigrants" rights.

I see many Mexican flags. This is a provocation -- historically it would have led to armed conflict. Get ICE in there, round them up.

Posted by: DM in Phx | June 24, 2007 4:28 PM

D Montgomery, you have stated a very large part of the problem without even realizing it!
W is not Superman or the King! CONGRESS allocates funding that NEVER GOT ALLOCATED to the FEDERAL agencies that oversee our Nation's Employment Laws and Immigration Laws! NOT BUSHIE! Congress is the only group that can write legislation to control the ID's used and who gets them and for what peices of Evidence of Identification are used to qualify!
CONGRESS has dropped the Ball!
We should stop trying to assume this is anything but the result of non-existant enforcement of Laws already on the books that were enacted to prevent this from ever occurring!
Stop the Anchor Babies(HR-1940:Birthright Citizenship Act) and BUST the Law-Breaking AMERICAN EMPLOYERS!!!!, and when the illegal workers can no longer go out to Tax Payer supplied "Day Labor Centers" and jump into Contractors trucks, they will just go home!

No mas trabajo aqui!

OOHHH, Poor Lindsay, I'm going to rock your poor little World now!

Fortunately for all you nice people in Washington Postal Land, I'll admit to being an old Yahoo's Discussion Board "Troll"!

Rat, was earned!

I am the son of Parents who operated an Industrial Hiring Hall in Houston, Texas. My Brother is still in the Business in San Antonio. My Mother and her large farming family are out of Donna in the Texas Rio Grande Valley-a stone's throw from the arroyo!

I have witnessed much over the last few decades to worry me! The worst of it is not the fall of a society by giving in to the desires of a populace abusing Democracy as is supposed to happen, but a group of Representatives selling out their constituints for the vast numbers of "Buyable"have nots they have used to get into office for at least the last two decades!-That's Treason Folks!
All I have to do Lindsay to totally and absolutely DESTROY your Pipe-Dream is to suggest you compare stats in Corpus Christi, Laredo, Harlingen, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, El Paso, The Valley, and all other Border towns 50 years ago, 25 years ago, 10 years ago, 5 years ago and NOW!

Sorry, but the Invasion is no bueno para Norte America!

After decades of conducting Labor services that we painstakingly prevented Un-Documented and illigitimate Workers from Jobs, to see our family's industry subverted with Tax Dollars we paid to develop Day Labor assemblies, and have our city's Reps. declare the places "Sanctuaries" makes me really very, very MAD! Guilliani-You don't have a Chance in Hell of winning! McCain-Bad decissions on your part too!

Mexico is singled out, because for most of my experience they are the ones manipulating all the Caca! Too easy for them to ship Kids over to flood our schools, too easy for them to use family ties-and they do! And yes poor one, I am very familiar with Mexico, and I can tell you this-It is not viewed as reverse discrimination-It is viewed as promoting Family-THIERS! Gringos go home!
And I'm even Catholic, but there comes a point you get tired of someone peeing on you and trying to tell you it's just raining!

Lindsay-Acceptance of their criminal behavior is nothing short of cowardice and caving in!

Catch 22-If you have a Criminal Record, you can't be a US Citizen. If you are illegally here you have broken the law! A US LAW at that!

If it was up to me, I would be issuing citations to every improperly ID'ed protester all over this country and tell them "There went your chance to ever be anything but a criminal invader!" See, you are now a documented criminal and will NEVER be granted US Citizenship!

Then sit and watch the Flood trying to get back home and back in line like decent law abiding and Country Sovereignty respecting US Citizen wannabees SHOULD!

And know what? My Jumbo Jack might go back down to 99 Cents like it was 10 years ago before they ever started invading this Country!-I know Rent will go back down to affordable levels and school Taxes will drop and Hospitals get out of the Red!

Posted by: RAT-The | June 24, 2007 8:20 PM

I'm really sick of the hatred that has been generated by fear mongers like Lou Dobbs who has used his "Broken Borders" to distort the image of the undocumented immigrants in this country. We are a whole better country by having them. They do every dirty job imaginable. They don't take anything away from anyone. They have strong family values, everything that can help this country. This "Anti-Immigrant" hysteria manufactured (by your right-wing radio commentators) is Anti-latino prejudice pure and simple. What does the hispanic community(our largest minority group in this country) think of this? Obviously the trade-off in hate against people of hispanic heritage has been carefully weighed.
LOU DOBBS is THE SCUM OF THE EARTH.

HELLO! AMERICA....

to turn the current, OCCUPATION, marginalization of humanity, legalization of poverty, and inhumanity around

if the people _knew_ that all that they needed to turn their lives around was to understand THIS:

YOU HAVE A CHOICE, ACT ON IT....VOTE FOR YOUR COUNTRY AND FELLOW CITIZENS....

LOOK,
ORDINARY BLUE COLLAR (former middle class) now odd jobbing, RETAIL, or temp workers at two jobs IF YOU knew that YOU CAN vote YOUR selves a new life....

if YOU could just _frame_ what you need to say...what IS keeping YOU down,

if YOU could just GRASP THAT WHAT YOU NEEDED to turn YOUR life around IS to understand that:

YOUR lives ARE BEING sacrificed for CORPORATE AND ELITIST INTERESTS,

AND YOU ARE NOT GETTING PAID A FAIR SALARY,

AND ELITISTs CHILDREN, ARE NOT GETTING KILLED TO STEAL OIL,

and YOUR FUTURE IS BEING SOLD TO INTERNATIONALISTS MONIED INTERESTS.

THE COUNTRY THAT _YOU_THE_PEOPLE_ HAVE WORKED FOR

AND WORKED HARD,
TO _MAKE_ _T_H_I_S_ COUNTRY GREAT!!!!!!!!!!

and it's being taken away,

IF MY FELLOW CITIZENS COULD JUST comprehend two things, these two things:

1. corporations are not acting in the best interests of citizens that they are claiming as their country of origin, and need to have their _favors_ rescinded...

a. outsourcing needs to be regulated, and stopped.

b. companies that move their physical
operations overseas that call
themselves American aren't, and should get
treated as foreign competitors...

c. we need to bring back manufacturing
jobs to the United States, and
reestablish our blue-collar/trade
based, middle-class...so that
opportunity exists for everyone that
is a citizen. There used to be blue collar
jobs that were a ticket out of the ghetto class.

2. hiring of "illegals" moves money out of the country, displaces American workers in the service sector and blue collar sector.

a productive society is one that exists to include _A_L_L_ OF the citizens of the entire spectrum of wealth, not just the upper .5% and their INTERNATIONAL FRIENDS...

we don't need to go back to the 19th century mindset that has a wealthy class and a serf or peasant class...

which is WHERE THIS BILL IS TAKING YOU...

this is a further erosion of the middle class....

H1-B VISA INCREASE WHEN WE HAVE OUT OF WORK ENGINEERS??????

...

CORPORATIONS NEED TO PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE TO THE CITIZENS OR

MOVE OUT...

AMERICA DOES NOT NEED YOU, WE _ARE_ THE BIGGEST MARKET...

YOU DON'T WANT TO SELL HERE???

SEE YAH, F*** OFF!

.

Ted Kennedy was a strong supporter of the 1965 Hart-Celler Act signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson which dramatically changed US immigration policy.

This is what Ted Kennedy said about the 1965 bill.

"The bill will not flood our cities with immigrants. It will not upset the ethnic mix of our society. It will not relax the standards of admission. It will not cause American workers to lose their jobs."

Kennedy is now the chair of the United States Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Citizenship, and remains a strong advocate for immigrants, both documented and undocumented

About the same time, there wasn't enough room for citizens to have children.

Back in the 60's the Federal Government came into the public schools and brainwashed us as little children with the message that the children we were about to have were unwanted because the population was rising so fast. They launched a program called, "Zero Population Growth". They pushed Family Planning and birth control pills. I think you and I now both know that you only have to trick people for their few child bearing years and there is no going back.

Many of us never had a say in the future of our unborn.

I am the result of two living cells. One from each of my parents. They are the result of two living cells, one from each of their parents. I wasn't just born. I am a continuation of life. I am a living thing that reaches back into time perhaps 400 million years and the result of billions of joining of pairs of cells. It is possible that if you were to follow my cells back to my parent's cells and beyond that my family tree touches every living thing here on earth. That is if we limit ourselves to believing life was created here on earth. If it rained down from the immensity of the universe it could reach back into that immensity of time and space, and who knows what relationships and who knows what species.

At least until I came up against the Federal Government and their plan to control the population.

I have seen the Federal Government do little else to control the population.

The open border, United States laws only apply to some, is a serious slap in the face. No, not a slap in the face, it reaches well beyond that. Maybe back to the beginning of time and stretch to the bounds of the universe.

THIS IS WHAT AMNESTY DOES:
Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas is a fairly famous institution and for a variety of reasons:

1. John F. Kennedy died there in 1963
2. Lee Harvey Oswald died there shortly after
3. Jack Ruby-who killed Lee Harvey Oswald, died there a few years later...by coincidence

On the flip side, Parkland is also home to the second busiest maternity ward in the country with almost 16,000 new babies arriving each year.
(That's almost 44 per day---every day!)

A recent patient survey indicated that 70 percent of the women who gave birth at Parkland in the first three months of 2006 were illegal immigrants. That's 11,200 babies born every year just in Parkland Hospital. According to the article, the hospital spent $70.7 million delivering 15,938 babies in 2004 but managed to end up with almost $8 million dollars in surplus funding. Medicaid kicked in $34.5 million, Dallas County taxpayers kicked in $31.3 million and the feds tossed in another $9.5 million.

The average patient in Parkland 's maternity wards is 25 years old, married and giving birth to her second child. She is also an illegal immigrant. By law, pregnant women cannot be denied medical care based on their immigration status or ability to pay.

OK, fine That doesn't mean they should receive better care than everyday, middle-class American citizens. But at Parkland Hospital, they do.

Parkland Memorial Hospital has nine prenatal clinics. NINE!!

The DallasMorning News article followed a Hispanic woman who was a patient at one of the clinics and pregnant with her third child---her previous two were also born at Parkland. Her first two deliveries were free and the Mexican native was grateful because it would have cost $200 to have them in Mexico. This time, the hospital wants her to pay $10 per visit and $100 for the delivery but she was unsure if she could come up with the money. Not that it matters, the hospital won't turn her away. (I wonder why they even bother asking at this point.)

Well, another subject of the article was born at Parkland in 1986 shortly after her mother entered the U.S. illegally---now she is having her own child there as well. (That's right, she's technically a U.S. citizen.) These women receive free prenatal care including medication, nutrition, birthing classes and child care classes. They also get freebies such as car seats, bottles, diapers and formula, etc.

Most of these things are available to American citizens as well but only for low-income applicants, and even then, the red tape involved is almost insurmountable.

Because these women are illegal immigrants, they do not have to provide any sort of legitimate identification---no proof of income. An American citizen would have to provide a social security number which would reveal their annual income---an illegal immigrant need only claim to be poor and the hospital must take them at their word.

"My husband is a pilot for the United StatesNavy (yes, he fought in Iraq ) and while the health care is good, we Navy wives don't get any of these perks! Car seats? Diapers? Not!. So my question is this: Does our public medical care system treat illegal immigrants better than American citizens?" Yes it does!

As I mentioned, the care I have received is perfectly adequate but it's bare bones, meat and potato medical care---not top of line.

Their (the illegals) medical care is free---simply because they are illegal immigrants. Once again, there is no way to verify their income.

Parkland Hospital offers indigent care to Dallas County residents who earn less than $40,000 per year. (They also have to prove that they did not refuse health coverage at their current job. Yeah, the 'free' care is not so easy for Americans.)

There are about 140 patients who received roughly $4 million dollars for un-reimbursed medical care. As it turns out, they did not qualify for free treatment because they resided outside of Dallas County. So the hospital is going to sue them! Illegals get it all free! But U.S citizens who live outside of Dallas County get sued!

As if that isn't annoying enough, the illegal immigrant patients are actually complaining about hospital staff not speaking Spanish. In this AP story, the author speaks with a woman who is upset that she had to translate comments from the hospital staff into Spanish for her husband. The doctor was trying to explain the situation to the family and the mother was forced to translate for her husband who only spoke Spanish. This was apparently a great injustice to her.

In an attempt to create a Spanish-speaking staff, Parkland Hospital is now providing incentives in the form of extra pay for applicants who speak Spanish. Additionally, medical students at the University of Texas Southwestern for which Parkland Hospital is the training facility will now have a Spanish language requirement added to their already jammed-packed curriculum. No other school in the country boasts such a ridiculous multi-semester (multicultural) requirement.

(Ed: Sorry for the length, but this needs wide circulation----particularly to our "employees" in Congress.

Mexico has NO age laws and the population explosion is the result. They won't stop having babies if they come here. 12 million is not 12 million, it's more like 100 million already.
I'm sick of pressing 1 for "English and all the material I get is in spanish and english and, I'm sick of paying 100 a month for cable when half ot it is for foreign language channels!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chance-Great article!

BUT, you left out the fact that it is occurring in every Hospital in every Border state and that many Hospitals on the Border it'self are now closed or closing due to bankruptcies!

You also should have included an allude to the Un-Documented single mother and her Un-Documented Mate who Flew in, dropped their US Citizens, and then got a Multi Million Dollar operation to seperate the Conjoined Twins!

I was destroyed financially when I got a Inguinal Hernia working and could not get help!-But, then, I'm a US Citizen-Who cares about me?
